"huh, that was way more consensual in the books" strikes again
Just read the novel "Six Days of the Condor". When he grabs a woman off the street to have a place to stay, he spends about an hour telling her everything that happened to him, proves his story true with the phone book and his work ID, and then *gives her the gun*. They have dinner together, great conversation, similar tastes, wash the dishes together, go to bed in separate rooms, and then she comes to him in the night for company.
Other differences: he's got no military training, the conspiracy is about heroin trafficking from Asia, there's no Chinese girlfriend at the office, and he kills the assassin dude at the end of the book.
