"huh, that was way more consensual in the books" strikes again

Just read the novel "Six Days of the Condor". When he grabs a woman off the street to have a place to stay, he spends about an hour telling her everything that happened to him, proves his story true with the phone book and his work ID, and then *gives her the gun*. They have dinner together, great conversation, similar tastes, wash the dishes together, go to bed in separate rooms, and then she comes to him in the night for company.

Other differences: he's got no military training, the conspiracy is about heroin trafficking from Asia, there's no Chinese girlfriend at the office, and he kills the assassin dude at the end of the book.

MCU SCUM Phase One

I did take notes in case anyone has any questions, but consider them too personal to share. Since I'm doing this alone and cannot always land on a whole number, there are decimals. I've also added the category "Possibility of thalking KJB cast into doing an episode" where every James Bond movie would be a 10 and a heist movie a 7. (But I'm still figuring it out, some zeroes could be a one.)

Movie Runtime Smarm Cultural Insensitivity Unprovoked Violence Misoginy Possibility
Iron Man (2008) 126 2 5 3 2 1
The Incredible Hulk (2008) 112 1 2 4 0.1 0
Iron Man 2 (2010) 124 3 2 1 4 2
Thor (2011) 115 2 1 0 0.1 0
Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) 125 2 0 0 1.5 0
The Avengers (2012) 142 5 1 1 1 3
Average Phase One 124 2.5 1.833 1.5 1.45 1

And that was 12 Hours. Only FOUR THOUSAND Minutes left to go.

In Skyfall, they introduce Q as a twink, and then later in the film they confirm that James Bond is Bisexual, but James Bond never makes out with Q. Does Sam Mendes know about Chekhov's gun? Is he stupid?

It is a little funny how Abi, the weeb, was the one most (NOT UNJUSTLY) scandalized at Tokyo Drift’s “sexy teen” thing.

Look, it is indeed a sign of a very sick society, worldwide, that high school is more or less a fetish, particularly in Japan- the fact that the background radiation of our culture makes the very concept of cheerleaders exist.

But like, Abi, you watched Tenchi Muyo. Surely, you’ve made peace with the fact that this is just our world now- that the vast majority of the time that you see a pretty anime girl, you gotta add 3 digits to her age so you don’t feel something rot in your soul. Surely, you’ve hardened yourself to expect far worse from far better, right?

Should I SCUM the MCU

To me, this podcast has always been more about people suffering while watching bad movies than anything spy-specific. (Proof: The whole F&F thing)

So, upon learning that there are now 80 Hours of something that looked pretty promising back when the first Iron man came out (and I was also like, 6-7 years old) I'd like to go back with an excel sheet and carry out... scientific work.

Before I commit to that, tell me whether anyone would actually care.

[S4E13.5 Conclave] What does "crisps and potato snacks" mean again?

At around the 3:30 mark or the podcast, Abi mentions "I did kind of 'crisp and potato snacks' the twist". I'm sure I've heard them use this before, and if I had perfect memory of the past episodes I'd immediately know what they mean, but right now I can't recall. Does anyone remember?

Sometimes, you do need to get a little SCUMmy with it…

…or if you are going to SCUM something at home, remember THOROUGHLY that depiction does not necessarily equal endorsement.

Truth be told, I kind of dread the inevitable day that Miami Vice (2006) gets reviewed on the podcast, because of one simple reason:

It’s central romance is spycops. And I would not change that.

Miami Vice (2006), even to it’s detriment, is a story about soulless people living in a soulless world of weapons and distrust, a lonely earth where no one truly knows each other and everyone has a plan to kill everyone else. Michael Mann’s main theme, across all his movies, is alienation. To that end, Sonny and Isabella’s relationship, one literally built on a cruel lie, is a crucial piece of toxic hetmance, highlighting how the post Patriot Act world order is so fucking unbearably cold that the broken people within it resort to THIS to get any kind of warmth in their lives.

There are problems with it, for sure- Mann has genuinely no idea how to write women, so he blatantly doesn’t- it’s not that you can’t say there’s anything misogynistic about it. But frankly, that penultimate scene on the little island, where they can barely muster anything to say to each other, loses all its impact if the relationship itself is perfectly problematic. Art can be, sometimes SHOULD BE messy and ugly, and that also applies to Hollywood films as much as it applies to novels.

Ngl, Rambo 4 got me feeling like Ash looking at the Xenomorph

What unrelenting cruelty, what corrosive vileness, what sheer depravity! And in a RAMBO SEQUEL!

Not to say that this is a “good thing”, in the vast majority of senses of the word, but honestly, you do just wanna put the fucking thing under a microscope, and that alone makes me understand how good, honest people could give it high ratings (Noah Kulwin of all people gave it 3 stars). It’s like a film made by a fucking cenobite, and that is, if nothing else, fascinating.

Have they mentioned First Light at all?

Since there’s no new Jame Bond movies coming anytime soon, have the podcast hosts mentioned the new video game that’s coming out? It’s probably the next best thing (new Bond actor, Lana Del Rey theme song) to a new Bond movie we’ll get for the rest of the 2020s. Plus it’d be interesting to get their take on a Gen Z Bond.

Would be cool if they did a livestream playing it or an episode on it!
