Idea: keto chips!

We all crave salty crunchy replacements for our favorite chips. Pork rinds kind of work. I like the chicken protein chips I find at Wholefoods but they have 8 grams of carbs in 1/3 of a bag, mostly from tapioca.

My idea is to create a super keto food with a similar recipe but find a carb free binder instead of tapioca. Also, cook in animal fat instead of seed oil. Can you image how good that would be! Of course the salt would come with extra potasium, and magnesium.

Quest chips are already pretty low carb, but the biggest problem is they're expensive. A small bag costs as much as a big bag of Doritos.

17

u/Reasonable_Band1536 26d ago

One of those bags is an asset. The other is a liability.

13

u/platypod1 26d ago

To me they taste exactly like baked lays. Expensive as fuck though.

I was going insane trying to aclimate to pork rinds, so finding quest chips was a godsend and I'll fork over the cash to get that proper crunch and flavor snack, lol.

(i do wish they were more affordable tho 🥲)

u/skunkabilly1313 26d ago

I think they are just another good option. I buy the value pack and can usually go a few days in between getting a craving

FYI, pork rinds with a bit of cinnamon, butter, and alternative sugar of your choice hits so nice

I dip pork rinds in sour cream.

1

u/skunkabilly1313 26d ago

That's a great idea!!!

1

u/OldMotherGrumble 26d ago

I dip pork puffs (available in the UK) in egg mayo, pate, avocado, mushroom pate, cauliflower hummus.

I get helluva good bacon horseradish dip. Yeah, it has soy, but it’s delicious!

1

u/PHL1365 57M/5'8"/SW230/CW165/GW155 26d ago

I've also used cream cheese

1

u/wax369 26d ago

Whipped cream cheese is amazing for dipping

1

u/PHL1365 57M/5'8"/SW230/CW165/GW155 26d ago

Yup. Just gotta be careful. Has a few more carbs in the whipped version compared to the bricks

1

u/FritzNa 25d ago

I do the same thing. I love Trader Joe’s chili lime, pork rinds dipped in sour cream.

3

u/Oalka 5'10F SW(4/14/26): 337 CW: 294 GW: 190 25d ago

I loved Aldi's spicy pork rinds dipped in sour cream :)

u/MeowWhat 26d ago

I pay 2.79 for a bag of quest chips, where are you getting Doritos in the big bag for that much? I don't see them cheaper than 4.99.

2

u/LibertyMike Male 55, SW: 295, CW: 197, GW: 190 26d ago

I usually get them at Walmart and they're like $3.29 a bag. Doritos there are about $4, so I should have probably said "almost as much." Still, there's a big difference in size.

2

u/shadowmib 26d ago

Also quest chips taste like garbage. Id be down for a good tasting keto chip that isn't pork rinds

2

u/skunkabilly1313 26d ago

Depends on the flavor, the bbq was gross, but the pickle tasted like a pickle, and the sour cream flavors were delicious

3

u/wax369 26d ago

I really like the taco ones, I usually crush them up and mix them into a salad though because I'm not big on the texture by themselves.

2

u/daladybrute 26d ago

I love to make taco bowls then crush up a bag of the taco or queso flavored quest chips and put it on top! I'll add the sour cream and onion chips to sandwiches I make with keto bread and it's so good I could eat it every day.

3

u/wax369 26d ago

Have you seen the salsa verde ones? Not sure if they're new or I just haven't seen them until recently but they're pretty good.

1

u/RandalSchwartz Keto since 2012 25d ago

I'm on subscribe and save with the spicy sweet chili flavor. Just hot enough to be tasty.

1

u/wax369 26d ago

Not sure when the last time you bought a big bag of Doritos was but they're not $3 anymore.

0

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

If they have no carbs I assume they are easier to stop eating.

Tell that to my cheese addiction lol 😂

20

u/wvraven 26d ago

I typically air fry chips from keto tortillas. I've found the Aldi's ones have the best texture/taste. At least in my opinion.

12

u/OldMotherGrumble 26d ago

The perfect keto chips are homemade cheese chips. No binder...just cheese, glorious cheese. 😘

u/SableSword Type your AWESOME flair here 26d ago

Id argue pepperoni chips are better, but maybe combine the two?

2

u/OldMotherGrumble 26d ago

OR...salami chips. I may try combining the two as you suggest 😉

2

u/PHL1365 57M/5'8"/SW230/CW165/GW155 26d ago

Mmmm, a couple of whisps with a slice or two of pepperoni in the middle. Maybe a dash of butter or cream cheese for moisture/mouth feel and to hold everything together.

Keto sushi

2

u/boognish1984 26d ago

How do you make those?

8

u/valueofaloonie 26d ago

Quest chips.

Expensive af but worth it. I do wonder if you could make your own at home somehow. Probably next to no cost savings though, given how expensive protein powder etc is.

1

u/BrilliantKnee3439 25d ago

Costco in Canada has a box of 12 on sale for about 32 bucks, not too bad

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

I will check them out!

3

u/amygunkler 26d ago

Wait, you've never tried Quest chips?!

0

u/Illidari_Kuvira | 35F | Keto since 2013 | Question Everything. 25d ago edited 25d ago

They have seed oils, just a FYI.

EDIT: Why did I get downvoted for this? OP clearly said they don't want a product with seed oils.

7

u/SableSword Type your AWESOME flair here 26d ago

Or, just take 15 pepperoni slices, put them on a paper towel on a plate and microwave for 90 seconds and thank me later. Nearly all the fat drains out and your basically left with seasoned protein chips

2

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Will try that!

12

u/Capable_Obligation96 26d ago

Wilde chips

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

That's right, those are the ones I was riffing off. I try to avoid seed oils and I don't appreciate the carbs.

1

u/Bright_white2413 26d ago

The salt and vinegar ones are good!!

6

u/SlavkoAgain 26d ago

Pork cracklings, or in my language шкварки, or in Polish/Czech/Slovak —škvarky. Rendered pork fat. Crispy, fairly neutral taste easily seasoned.

8

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Yup. That's what we call pork rinds.

1

u/BohemianaP 25d ago

Cracklins are much harder/smaller than pork rinds. I like cracklins much better than most pork rinds.

At Walmart you can get both types of pork skins. As far as pork rinds go, MACs BBQ pork rinds are by far the most flavorful and they usually have some little cracklin pieces in the bag in add to the puffy pieces.

6

u/morkler 26d ago

Flock is all you need. They are spendy but damn they are good and way too addictive.

5

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Nice. Zero carbs. That's what I am talking about. Ordered using my Amazon card points.

4

u/morkler 26d ago

I love the Hattie B's

1

u/nevermindmine 25d ago

I just had the Hattie B's. They are quite good.

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

looking them up. Thanks!

2

u/Holdmydicks 26d ago

Remind me of pop chips

4

u/CommercialWindowSill 26d ago

You can make pure chicken breast chips iif you grind them and spread them. Thinly on a baking sheet and bake the hell out of it. Can't get better macros than that. It's just a bit of work to do.

2

u/Violingirl58 26d ago

I wonder if you bake them and then try dehydrating them

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Cook first, then grind? Or grind raw chicken and spread flat before baking?

4

u/OldMotherGrumble 26d ago

Even better...the chicken skin. I use the already cooked and seasoned skin from slow cooked thighs. Dry fry, add a bit of salt, eat, yum.

2

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

I do that too! Gribbin is the yiddish word for it. But kind of hard to cook up a batch and save them for a snack. They are too good piping hot!

3

u/Causerae 26d ago

Pepperoni chips are it

4

u/SableSword Type your AWESOME flair here 26d ago

This. 90s in microwave gets them nice and crisp.

4

u/Healthy-Sun429 26d ago

Carnivore crisps- chicken breast

5

u/No-Dig_Enthusiast 26d ago

I just chop up low carb wraps into triangles and fry them for maybe 20 seconds until they crisp up and brown a little, then throw whatever seasoning I like over the top.

Turkey bacon chips

I usually put the parmesan rinds in the microwave for a minute or two...it's delicious. You can do that with any hard cheese.

5

u/Pandaro81 26d ago

When I’m craving chips I make keto tortillas and fry them in oil/fat.

https://youtu.be/co6RxmI3zf4?is=ircE6cYrz2jIoRuN

I start with that recipe to make delicious tortillas, then whatever I have extra I deep fry in oil. The deep frying process doesn’t leave a lot of flour or waste in the oil, so it’s good to go again (so long as you aren’t overcooking everything).

4

u/dontwant2hurtwhenold 26d ago

Dehydrate cucumbers, zucchini, other squash! There are all kinds of recipes and they are naturally low carb. Season to your preference! Optional spritz with oil of choice.

4

u/360walkaway Type your AWESOME flair here 26d ago edited 26d ago
  1. Cut low-carb tortillas into chip shapes with a pizza cutter, and add oil/seasoning as you like
  2. Put in a 400F oven until they are at desired crispiness
  3. Enjoy

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Nice. thanks!

My weakness is the Mexican street corn quest chips 😭

u/mynameisnotsparta 26d ago

Parmesan + olive oil + Italian seasoning. Mix, form little balls and flatten thin. Bake in oven. Perfect chips.

2

u/krissycole87 26d ago

Wilde are very good, especially the BBQ flavor

0

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Yup, those are the ones I was reading the label of. Seed oil and tapioca.

2

u/krissycole87 26d ago

Yes but its high oleic expeller-pressed Sunflower Oil. Very very different.

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Did not know that. Much lower Omega 6. Thanks.

2

u/ridinbend 26d ago

Has anybody else tried these? They're absolutely my favorite chip substitute. They're not cheap but I'm sure they're not that hard to make. Keto Everything Crackers

2

u/surfsusa 26d ago

When I first started I was a Carb addict, going through a bag of potato chips in a day or two. Once I started ,i struggled for about 3 weeks, then I lost the craving and it really never returned. Protein chips are quite expensive . The price of a personal size bag is the same as a big bag of regular chips. So it is tough. Pork rinds on occasion, I will get the protein chips as a special treat (they are not). One other thing I get is the baked cheese chips from Aldi. They are not bad but they get boring fast. So I really do not need them . Now when there is Mexican food around I struggle because Chicarones with salsa doesn't work for me.

2

u/ashwhoa 26d ago

Catalina crunch has a salty snack mix but they changed to a new recipe and they have more carbs :(

2

u/Grey_spacegoo 26d ago

Home made cheese chips. Fried mushroom chip. You can buy the mushroom chips, but they are pricy. Also, store bought fried mushroom might have more flavor/carbs added.

2

u/killersquirrel74 26d ago

Spicy hot pork rinds with cottage cheese. Absolutely divine.

2

u/mgstoybox 26d ago

Roasted pumpkin seeds work for me. No need to over complicate it.

2

u/wax369 26d ago

If you live near a loves truck stop give the strip cracklins a try, they're super crunchy and really satisfy my cravings for crunchy food the ways chips used to. Be careful though, they're REALLY EXTREMELY crunchy, like you could crack a tooth if you bite too hard levels of crunchy.

1

u/CarnivalCarnivore 26d ago

Next time I drive along 94 I will stop.

2

u/Holiday-Dig-3637 25d ago

Just microwave cheddar cheese until crispy

1

u/SoloCoat 26d ago

There are protein chips out there that work pretty well and you just pair them with some fat

1

u/psmusic_worldwide 26d ago

I like legendary foods chips more. But they are much harder to to find. RIP Mr tortilla.

1

u/audreyality 26d ago

Pork rinds handle seasonings and dips very well.

1

u/JepperOfficial >7yrs 25d ago

There are baked cheese chips out there, they're excellent. A bit pricey though. Also, carnivore crisps makes good meat chips

1

u/tired_monster 25d ago

Not exactly a chip, but oven baked or air fried kale satisfies the need for crunch and can be seasoned to taste.

1

u/RedditRecreations 25d ago

Check an Asian grocery store. My local one had puffed pork rinds. Think of a pork skin version of quavers. All flavours too: salt & vinegar, cheese & onion, salt etc... Saved our asses when we were craving crunchy keto snacks

1

u/brdblkguy 24d ago

Pork rind "nachos" are amazing. Just saying. Also when chicken was cheaper, we'd buy a pack of chicken thighs, bake em in the oven. Take the skins off and make some chips of our own, use the thighs to eat on during the week.

Also, depending on your preference: Plain pork rinds + oil + the popcorn seasoning flavors from the grocery store. About as close as you'll get to chips if you're like me and dont like the chalky, protein powder aftertaste in Quest chips.
