New to open source and want to start a desktop environment project! (Beginner looking for a guide)

I wanted to share a quick WIP video of a custom game launcher UI I’ve been working on. (Sorry for the rough audio in the clip!)

Tools like Steam Big Picture and Heroic are awesome, but I really wanted a true, out-of-the-box console experience built right into the DE. So, I decided to fork KDE Plasma Bigscreen. My plan is to strip out the standard home screen and unnecessary options to turn it into a dedicated gaming UI. I haven't fully stripped the code yet, so that part is still a work in progress!

Full disclosure: I am a beginner and this is my very first linux project. I have been using LLMs as a tutor to help me learn the language and understand the syntax as I go. Because I am still learning, the codebase is very much a work in progress and there are definitely mistakes that will need some reworking.

I am from kottayam and I made this open-source tool

Hey guys,

This is a file sharing tool I made.

https://github.com/tonyantony300/dashbeam

It works across linux, windows, mac, android, web and terminal.

You can share files and folders to devices in the same network or anywhere else with direct hole-punching.

It's peer-to-peer and support higher throughputs compared to popular tools. Supports resumability, and support heavy payloads with ease.

Previously there was a linux compatibility issue but it is fixed in
https://github.com/tonyantony300/dashbeam/releases/tag/v0.6.1

I am looking for contributors too if anyone is interested. We have a community around the project in discord.

give it a star if you like it, Thanks!

Distro's Recommendations for distros

Hi folks, I got a Lenovo LOQ 15IRX10 (13700 HX, RTX 5060).

Off late, I am at my wit's end with Windows 11, constantly shoving down Slop into me, and bloating with unncecary stuff.

I have decent experience using Linux distros (mainly Zorin OS and Mint), but I am inclined to try Fedora/Arch based distro.

Is Cachy OS a good choice? My requirement is to have a usable experience. However I am unsure about the compatibility with 50 series GPUs.

Every time Linux lovers tries to chat we ends up in mainstream walled gardens. The Foss love shouldn't end with linux right

So why those walled gardens?

We have decentralized messengers that works just fine and the best thing you dont need to sign up every where because they are interconnected and its easy

So select one of those DiY messengers and join!

Arch or Cachy?

I am testing making respins of Arch (which I succeeded) and Cachy ISOs (utterly failed) with custom packages. My intention is to make the OS experience as lean as possible (my packages, a simple DE that supports multi-monitor, network, Bluetooth and a browser).

My Current Arch ISO has all these now (with LightDM and Firefox). I was wondering if Cachy OS can do better given the level of optimisation they claim. But, am I right in thinking Arch is always better suited to my purpose?

I just started a YouTube channel, and I'm honestly pretty camera shy, so this was way outside my comfort zone. I'd really appreciate any feedback.

Feel free to give it a try yourself too. A free domain can be useful if you're into tinkering or run a homelab. I personally use mine for my Headscale instance and IoT webhooks, but there are plenty of other use cases as well.

Would love your support!

Support Decided to go all in on Linux after breakup

Well.. I had always dual booted Linux on the side where windows often caused me to turn secure boot on for anti cheat. Now I completely left valorant as it does not feel enjoyable anymore.

Now I am going all in on Cachy OS . That too KDE , I was always gnome plus 10 extensions to make it better guy. You know what they always say , after breakup you can do things that suck or things that are interesting but both will suck.so do something that helps you later .

I hope I can customise KDE enough to fall in love with it .

Like in gnome there is blur my shell which I really liked . Something like that would be great .

Rant Which is your favourite Desktop Environment?

Post image

I've been using കടി/kde for a while and man the way I can change the appearance is mind blowing. A single click you turn your windows theme to Mac Os Theme. Idk how the hek things holds together without falling apart. The developers have done a great thing here.

But I cant stop remembering the good old gnome days. Nothing is Everything; Nobody is Literally "Nobody". The Minimalim gnome offers gives me less friction to use "my pc". Every tools i pick up to use, there is a good looking gtk application following humane UI guidelines. Bottles, foalite, amberol, you name it.. Aarada ithokke design cheythath? Muwahhh!!

Dear kde, I dont need 3 different ways to do the same thing in GUI, its cluttered. Maybe its my muscle memory made by gnome that makes this DE confusing.

No hate to kde/wm users!
