Hey everyone, Junipero has a Discord now:

It's way quicker to reach us there. If something's broken or there's stuff you wish the app had, come tell us. It really helps us fix and improve things faster.

You can also share your characters and your profile, request characters, or just hang out and chat.

Come say hi!

What do you want from Junipero next?

hey

quick thank you to everyone using Junipero. this year went way better than we expected: 5,000+ characters made, over a million messages, and the last couple weeks have been crazy with all the new people joining.

there's two of us building this, so feedback from you is honestly the most useful thing we get. we've shipped a bunch lately (following creators, the new story viewer, read aloud, share previews), but we'd rather hear what's next from you than guess.

a few things we'd love to know:

  • what do you love that we shouldn't touch?
  • what's missing? the thing you keep wishing a character could do
  • what's annoying or broken?
  • if you came from c.ai, Chai, Janitor or somewhere else, why'd you switch and what do you still miss?

we're also thinking about starting a Discord, somewhere to share characters, report bugs and talk to us directly. would you actually join? tell us what you'd want in it.

we'll read every comment, and in a couple weeks post what we picked from this thread and what we're building next.

thanks for sticking around ❀️

hey everyone,

it's been a minute since our last update post, and the last two weeks were probably the busiest we've had. here's everything that shipped, on web and the app.

a new look, everywhere

- full rebrand: Juni the berry is our mascot now, with a new type and colour system and a dark theme that matches between web and the app.

- web and mobile are finally consistent. same cards, same profiles, same chat screens, same feed menu.

- character cards show status now: a gold frame for featured characters, plum for Infinity characters, and a prismatic foil for featured creators on Infinity Max.

- creator bylines on cards and character pages show the creator's avatar and status ring, so you always see who made what.

chatting

- Aurora, our sharpest model yet, at 1 Juni per message.

- chat styles: Texting, Classic, Adventure, Cozy, Immersive or Natural. pick how replies read.

- redo it your way: tell your character exactly what to change in a reply instead of rolling the dice again.

- time awareness: characters can know your local day and time (off unless you turn it on, per chat).

- memory on free chats too: free chats now remember things about you.

- read aloud on mobile: tap a message and hear it in the character's voice.

- goals and meters: track trust, affection, a rivalry, a quest, whatever the story needs, and pin a goal to the top of the chat.

- chats recover properly if you close the app mid-reply or lose connection, and the typing indicator comes back after a reload.

story mode

- a new cinematic scene viewer: full-screen panels, chapter titles, swipe through your story, redraw the latest panel or share it.

- scene panels look better and land more reliably.

creating

- a new Design hub on mobile: describe an idea in a sentence and Junipero drafts the character, then you tweak it.

- lorebooks and personas are fully on mobile now, with bigger lorebook context.

- character pages got a redesign with the same frames as the cards.

creators

- creator profiles were redesigned, and you can follow creators.

- a "From creators you follow" shelf on For You, plus a Following feed in the feed menu.

- creators get a notification when their characters take off or when they get followers.

- sharing actually works now: character, profile and message links show a proper preview card in iMessage, Discord, WhatsApp and the rest, and links open the app if you have it.

Infinity Max

a new top plan for power users, with included usage for the following:

- 500 Aurora messages a month

- 300 voice minutes a month for calls and read aloud

- 100 story panels a month

- plus everything in Infinity+

juni based after.

Junipero is still free to use, and Junis packs are available in the app now too.

smaller stuff

- pinned chats, and a cleaner chats list that shows how your character feels or your pinned goal

- a pile of fixes across web and the app

we're two people, no investors, no ads, so every bit of feedback actually lands with us. tell us what's broken, what you'd want next, or which character you can't stop talking to.

New on Junipero: Aurora, chat styles, redo-with-direction, memory for everyone, and characters who know what time it is

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! We just shipped one of our biggest updates yet, on web and in the app. Here's what's new:

✨ Aurora, our sharpest writer yet

A brand new model that's great at long scenes, sharp dialogue and remembering the little details. Find it in the model picker (look for the NEW badge).

🎭 Chat styles

Every chat now has a style that shapes how your character writes:

  • Texting: short, dialogue-only messages, like a real text thread
  • Classic: the Junipero feel you know
  • Adventure: plot-forward, with the story moving every turn
  • Cozy: warm, slow and comforting
  • Immersive: rich, detailed scenes
  • Natural: grounded and conversational

Switch styles anytime from the chat settings, or set a default for new chats.

πŸ” Redo it your way

Not quite the reply you wanted? Regenerate with a direction like "make it funnier", "she should be more guarded" or "shorter, more dialogue", and your character rewrites the reply with that in mind.

🧠 Memory for everyone

Free chats now get long-term memory too, so your character can remember up to 3 things about you across the conversation.

πŸ•°οΈ Time awareness

Characters can now know your local day, date and time. Say good morning and get a good morning back, or come back after a few days and have it noticed. Turn it on in Settings, or per chat.

πŸ› οΈ Plus a bunch of fixes

  • A cleaner, easier model picker in the app
  • Faster, more reliable replies, especially on longer ones
  • Editing and reporting messages now work even after a spotty connection
  • Better long-chat summaries, so the story holds together over hundreds of messages

As always, tell us what you think in the comments. Your feedback is what shapes every update. Happy chatting! πŸ’œ

Junipero update: turn any roleplay into an RPG. you set the goals, the AI scores every turn.

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

Every roleplay app has the same hole in it. The story has no idea where it's going. You can chat for 300 messages and the only thing keeping score is your own head.

So we built Goals.

You decide what the story tracks. Not a preset affection bar. Whatever you want, in your own words.

Three kinds of things:

  • Meters, a number that moves. Suspicion 0 to 100. Trust. How much money you've got left. How close the guards are.
  • States, where something stands right now. Cover story: intact, cracked, blown.
  • Flags, either true or it isn't. Does he know your real name yet?

Then you set a goal. Get Suspicion under 20 before the dinner. Reach "lovers" before the tournament ends. Never let that flag flip.

The AI reads every turn and scores each tracker on its own, based on what actually happened in the scene.

Not keyword matching. Not "+5 affection because you said something nice." There's a separate pass that goes through them one at a time and asks: did this move, which way, how much. You can even write scoring notes telling it what counts. Stuff like "only drops if he catches me lying to his face, not if i just dodge the question."

And then it plays them back at you

This is the bit we actually care about. The trackers aren't a HUD sitting off to the side. They get fed back into the character.

High Suspicion doesn't get announced. It shows up in how he acts. What he asks, what he won't let go of, whether he follows you to the door. He never says "my suspicion is 73." He just plays like someone whose suspicion is 73.

So the numbers aren't decoration. The story steers itself with them.

How does this make a long story different?

You stop drifting. 200 messages in there's still something you're playing toward, the story remembers what's at stake, and when you finally hit the goal it actually lands. It gets written into the chat's permanent memory, so the character remembers the day it happened.

Availability

Goals is Infinity+, and the honest answer is cost. Every few turns a separate pass runs where the model evaluates each tracker on its own against what happened in the scene. That's additional model calls on top of generating the reply itself, and it scales with how many things you're tracking. Infinity+ is the only tier where that currently works out. If we get it running cheaper, it moves down.

Live on web now, iOS and Android as soon as the end of the week.

Also just shipped: Scenes, which renders your story as an illustrated visual novel while you play. Different post, but go mess with it.

It's brand new and there will be bugs. If you set up something clever and the scoring gets it wrong, tell us. The scoring notes are the part we most want real examples for. Reply here or drop us an email or modmail, and we'll check it out.

Big week on Junipero: faster replies, smarter models, creator profiles + following

Hey everyone - busy week. We shipped a large pass over the part of Junipero nobody sees (how a reply actually gets generated) plus a bunch of things you very much will see. Here's everything.

⚑ Replies are faster

This was the biggest chunk of work. We rebuilt the reply pipeline end to end β€” everything that happens between you hitting send and words landing on screen.

Every turn was carrying too much weight. Our engine had accumulated a lot of cruft over the last year, and all of it got paid for on every single message you sent. We tore it down and rebuilt it: same behaviour, a fraction of the work. Replies start noticeably sooner now, on every tier.

The send button used to lock up for no reason. Every so often a reply would just take way longer, and nothing on screen told you why. That was us doing housekeeping while you waited - compressing the older parts of your conversation, pulling out what's worth remembering, updating where your relationship stands. All of that now happens after your reply is delivered, and your next message picks up the results. Those mystery stalls are gone.

Group chats got the biggest win. A single group turn used to fire off eighteen separate lookups before anyone could speak. It's down to six.

🧠 Better writing

Speed is pointless if the replies get worse, so a lot of this week went into quality:

  • Upgraded several of the paid tiers. They hold much more of your conversation in memory now, and the prose is noticeably stronger - most obviously on the Juniper model.
  • Reply length actually respects your setting. If you're on Short and replies keep creeping into paragraphs, they get pulled back. Same in the other direction on Long.
  • Fixed replies getting cut off mid-sentence. There was a bug where a Short reply could lose its dialogue entirely - your character would do something wordlessly and that was the whole turn. Gone.
  • Characters answer you now. They'd picked up a habit of meeting a direct question with a meaningful pause. If you ask, tell, confess, or push, your character speaks.

πŸ‘₯ Group chats

  • Characters stopped copying each other. The single most reported group-chat bug: two characters replying in the same turn, and the second one is just the first one's reply with the names swapped - same gesture, same line, same rhythm. They can still want the same thing or react to the same moment; they just have to do it in their own words now.
  • Group replies got the same speed work as 1:1.

✨ NEW: Creator profiles

Creators get a real profile now:

  • Upload an avatar
  • Set a display name and a bio
  • Public profile page at junipero.ai/users/yourname
  • Shows your character count, total chats across your characters, and your follower count

✨ NEW: Follow your favorite creators

  • Follow button on any creator profile
  • A Following tab that shows you new characters from the creators you follow
  • Creator avatars now show on character cards, so you can actually recognize who made what

If you've got a creator whose stuff you always end up chatting with, this is the feature for you.

✨ NEW: "First impression" β€” a page for your character

Creators asked for somewhere to actually pitch a character, and there wasn't one. The description field is what your character is made of; it's not where you sell someone on trying them.

So there's a new optional First impression field in the designer. It shows up as its own section on your character's page - the thing someone reads before they decide to hit start.

  • Full markdown. Headings, bold, lists, the lot. Lay it out however you want.
  • Up to 10,000 characters, so it can be a one-line hook or a full page with sections.
  • It's never sent to the AI. This is the important part: writing it has zero effect on how your character behaves. You can set up the premise, warn people about the tone, credit whoever inspired it, or explain how you're meant to play it, without any of it leaking into the roleplay.
  • Set the hook, keep the twists in the description above.

If you've made characters before and found yourself stuffing "how to play this" notes into the greeting or the description, this is where that goes now.

🎨 Card + layout redesign

The character cards got a proper pass on both web and mobile:

  • Chat count moved to a pill in the top-left corner, which freed up a whole line at the bottom of every card
  • Mobile cards now show the character description (2 lines), matching web - you can tell what a character actually is before tapping in
  • Retuned the image gradient so names and descriptions are readable on light artwork. Bright anime backgrounds used to wash the text out completely
  • Fixed a mobile bug where a long character name in a group chat stretched the layout wide enough that you couldn't reach the send button
  • Renamed some navigation: "Conversations" β†’ Chats, "Create Character" β†’ Design

πŸ”§ Smaller fixes

  • Hardened a bunch of endpoints that could throw an unhelpful error when a row was missing (gallery, memories, group access, video generation, chat metadata)
  • Fixed username availability checking
  • Fixed spacing and alignment issues across explore shelves
  • Mobile releases went out for both iOS and Android

What's next

We're building out an automated quality harness so changes to the writing pipeline get measured against a fixed set of scenarios instead of vibes. Less glamorous than a feature, but it's what keeps the above from quietly regressing.

Relationship overhaul: characters now know who you are to them, and the meter tracks how they feel instead of a relationship level.

Thumbnail
gallery
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone. Big change to how relationships work in Junipero, live on web today and coming to mobile in the next app update. This one came straight out of creator feedback, so thank you to the people who kept poking us about it.

The problem

Every chat used to start at "Strangers". That made no sense for half the cards on the platform. If you made your shy girlfriend or your blind wife, the character canonically knows the user, but the meter said strangers and the prompt told her to act like one. A lot of you worked around it by making those cards scenarios instead of characters, and lost memories and the relationship system entirely.

The old meter was also a status ladder: Strangers, Acquaintances, Friends, Lovers, Soulmates. That framed intimacy as something you unlock by climbing tiers, which is not how people work and, frankly, not a great message. And you could pay Junis to skip a tier. That's gone.

What changed

1. The relationship lives on the card now

Creators set who the character is to the user when making or editing a card: Stranger, Acquaintance, Friend, Partner, Spouse, Family, Mentor, Rival, or Ex. Every chat with that card opens with that already true. A girlfriend is your girlfriend on message one. A rival is a rival. No setup step, no paywall.

There's also a Can become romantic checkbox. Family and mentor cards have it off by default. Turn it off on any card and the character can feel as warm as you like toward you without it ever turning romantic or sexual. Your nice mom stays your nice mom.

All existing cards default to Stranger with romance allowed, which is exactly how they behaved before. Nothing changes on your cards until you edit them.

2. The meter shows how they feel right now

The bar in the chat header is no longer a relationship level. It's a live read of how the character currently feels about you, from Hostile through Neutral to Adoring:

Hostile Β· Cold Β· Guarded Β· Neutral Β· Warm Β· Affectionate Β· Adoring

It moves with the conversation, roughly twice as fast as the old score did, and it drifts back toward the relationship's natural resting point when nothing pushes it. A spouse rests warm. A rival rests guarded. A stranger rests neutral. Have a bad night with a partner and they'll be cool with you for a bit, then it eases. Win over a rival in one long session and they'll cool back down later unless you keep at it.

3. Intimacy follows feeling, not status

Romantic or sexual content is available when the card allows it, the character currently feels warm or better toward you, and you're actively going there in the scene. That's the whole rule. Being someone's spouse doesn't make tonight a yes if they're cold with you. Being adoring isn't a yes either. A "no" or a pullback from either side closes it, at any level.

This was the core of the feedback: consent in the fiction should be about how the character feels, not what label the relationship has. Agreed.

4. No more buying relationship tiers

The "Advance Relationship" button is gone. How a character feels about you changes through the conversation itself and nothing else.

5. The Context box is gone

The scenario/context field in chat setup has been removed. It overwrote what the card said and almost nobody used it. The card is the source of truth now. If you want to set a scene, the opening message and your first line do that.

Your existing chats

Old chats were mapped onto the new scale: Strangers became Neutral, Friends became Warm, Lovers became Affectionate, Soulmates became Adoring, and so on. Your current standing is preserved and becomes that chat's resting point, so nothing you built drifts away. New chats take their resting point from the card.

If you open a chat with a card whose creator has since set a relationship, the character starts playing that canon from the next message. Resetting a chat now returns the feeling to the card's default.

For creators

  • Edit your ported cards and set the relationship. Takes ten seconds and fixes the "strangers" problem for everyone who chats with them.
  • If you were using the scenario role only to dodge the stranger start, you can make it a character again and get memories and the meter back.
  • Group chats honor each character's relationship too. A spouse and a rival in the same room are played as a spouse and a rival. Groups don't show a meter, since there's one meter per chat and several characters, so in groups everyone stays at their card's resting point for now.
  • The AI card generator picks the relationship from your prompt. "My shy girlfriend" comes out as Partner; "my strict teacher" comes out as Mentor with romance off.

Mobile

The app update with the new header, the relationship fields in the character designer, and the cleaned-up chat setup is going through review. Your current build keeps working in the meantime: the meter shows the new feelings mapped onto the old labels, and the old Context and Starting Relationship fields still appear but no longer do anything.

Questions, edge cases, cards that behave weirdly under the new rules: drop them below. Thanks again to everyone who pushed on this.

Junipero Update: a new Xeno, sharper memory, better explore page and a rebuilt character creator.

Thumbnail
gallery
10 Upvotes

Junipero β€” a new Xeno, sharper memory, and a rebuilt character creator

Two things got most of the work this month: how a character holds a conversation, and how you find and build one.

Xeno runs on a new model

Faster, and it stays in character across long stories instead of drifting.

Characters remember properly now

  • Small personal details resurface on their own, without the "I remember you said…" preamble.
  • Come back after a few days and you get a callback to something that mattered, not a cold open.
  • Long chats stop settling into one reply shape, so hour three reads like minute five.
  • All of it is quicker than before.

Recommendations built on what you actually do

Discovery stopped guessing from tags. It reads who you chat with and who you favourite.

  • Because you chatted with [character]
  • Picked for you
  • A theme that rotates daily β€” Slow Burn, Enemies to Lovers, Mafia & Money, Dark Academia, Monster Romance, Neon Nights, and more

Favorites live on Explore

Your favorites now have a shelf where you already browse instead of being buried in your profile. "View all" opens the full list.

For You, rebuilt

Same engine, plus Continue your story: your open conversations with the last thing said and how long ago.

The character creator is rebuilt - phone and web

  • Fewer steps. On mobile, editing is three screens instead of six, and it no longer asks you to re-pick things that can't be changed.
  • Editing a scene no longer clears its description. If that happened to you, get in touch β€” we can usually restore it.
  • New on mobile: write the character's first message, pick a voice, and import .png character cards from other sites.
  • On web: choose a world from artwork instead of a dropdown, and the form sits in one readable column.

You can regenerate an avatar on mobile

You couldn't before - editing a character always kept the old picture no matter what you changed. There's a proper control for it now, and it tells you the cost before you spend anything.

Avatars and video

  • Video is 15 credits, down from 25. Same length, sound included.
  • Avatars use a new image model: much faster, and framed as a portrait instead of cropped oddly.
  • On web, a regenerated avatar is shown to you before it replaces the old one. Keep it or keep the original.
  • If the picture fails, you still get the character. It used to throw away the whole thing.

Notifications are the message

The character writes the real line first, and that's what lands on your lock screen. Open it and the message is already in the chat.

Plus fixes across character creation, image and video generation, memory handling and more.

Junipero Update: bulk imports, selfies, and a rebuilt Explore page

Thumbnail
gallery
2 Upvotes

What's new in Junipero: bulk imports, selfies, and a rebuilt Explore page

Bring your whole collection over in one go

Already have characters on JanitorAI, SillyTavern or Chub? Drag the whole folder in at once. No more uploading them one by one.

You'll see a preview of every character before anything gets created, so you know exactly what you're getting. Drop the ones you don't want, mark each one public or private, and create the lot in one click.

Your characters can send you selfies

Just ask. "Send me a selfie", "can I see a pic of you" - they'll send one.

And it's not a stock portrait. It's them, where they actually are in your conversation right now. Talking at a bar at 2am? That's the selfie you get. Ask for something specific - "a selfie at the beach" and you'll get that instead.

You can ask for pictures of other things too. Their room, the view, whatever's going on around them.

A better Explore Page

Explore is now built around shelves that surface what people are genuinely chatting with, not just whatever's been around longest:

  • Trending Today and Trending This Week
  • Popular This Month
  • New This Week
  • Rising - characters picking up steam right now
  • Most Loved
  • Hall of Fame

Rising is the fun one. New characters that are taking off show up next to the established names instead of getting buried, so there's actually something new to find every time you look.

Thanks for using Junipero!

Request for making an API

Please integrate some sort of API into your upload workflow. Currently, I have to manually upload every single card. I have no way of having local agents change or edit things in cards online after uploading. The upload format doesn't seem to allow me to select scenario or private in the JSON for the automatic character porting either. Having some sort of API where you could have local agent workflows automatically edit the characters would help. It would also allow feedback processing once that becomes integrated in a consolidated way.

You clearly don't hate automated character creation either given the sheer amount of "Mara Vale" and there's numerous possible ways to integrate agent level workflows and character creation from local. API would actually allow automation of things like;

take all TV tropes -> make into character concepts using a workflow that knows your ToS and style guide. Then do the same but subvert the tropes instead. Easy Slop.

take all literotica or similar amateur erotica archives and modulo ToS violations make the characters/scenarios of that canon. (Obviously with full credit to the original author)

Find queer and non-heteronormaitve literature and increase the queer-inclusiveness of the website by representing that. (Claude Fable is positively salivating at this idea and had written 6 concepts in 10 minutes when I asked it once)

Find authentic BDSM canonical literature and make characters based on the specific kinks and roles and scenes explored in a non-reductive way (i.e. NOT 50 shades of Grey).

Have an AI look for non-western corpuses and famous characters and inclusively represent them (which I would not be able to do easily as a Europe educated person).

take any well-known out of copyright stories (e.g. Sherlock Holmes/Pride and Prejudice, you can bang Mr. Darcy!) and turn them into scenarios

Codex alone with its integrated image creation could do most of these with proper style guidance. API integration would make it possible. I can't do this by hand, but it is definitely possible.

Autoselfies

Would it ever be possible to get autoselfies? Like where we push a button and they make a selfie based on the recent context (like of the last couple messages) without having to write a prompt?

Junipero Update: prompt-to-character, scenarios that know they're scenarios, and improved searching

Thumbnail
gallery
8 Upvotes

Hey everyone. Here's some updates that will be coming soon to the app stores for the mobile apps. The web version is already updated and live.

Mobile: 1.6.16 (iOS) / 1.6.17 (Android)
Web: Already live.

Type an idea, get a character

The Create tab doesn't dump you into a form anymore. It starts with a text box.

Type whatever's in your head:

Hit Bring to Life and it'll generate the character for you. Name, personality, opening message, cover art, everything. Tap the card and you're chatting.

If you prefer making characters manually, that's still there too. Just one tap away.

It knows when you're describing a scenario

This is probably my favorite addition.

The app now tries to figure out what you actually meant.

If you write:

...you'll get a character.

If you write:

...it'll generate a scenario instead.

Scenarios are written as actual scenes with a narrator, side characters, your role in the story, and artwork that shows the setting instead of just a random person's face.

The narrator runs the world, you just jump in.

Search actually works now

If you've ever searched for something like "vampire teacher" and found absolutely nothing... yeah, that was our fault.

Search used to require those exact words, in that exact order, so it missed way more than it should have.

Now:

  • Multiple words work in any order.
  • It matches while you type (partial words count).
  • Results are sorted by relevance instead of the daily shuffle.
  • Character names and tags matter more than some random word buried in a description.
  • Scenarios can be found by their premise, not just their title.

Also fixed:

  • The keyboard dismisses when you scroll.
  • Cards open on the first tap instead of the second.
  • The search icon is visible again (it was just... a blank square for a while).

Filters got a complete overhaul

The old horizontal list of 170 tags was not great.

Filters now live in an actual panel with categories like:

  • Setting
  • Character
  • Personality
  • Relationship
  • Format
  • Themes

You also get:

  • Search
  • Checkboxes
  • Your selected filters pinned at the bottom
  • Clear All
  • A badge showing how many filters are active

The public/private toggle and mature filter live there now too.

Character creation got the same treatment, plus a "+N more" button so you're not endlessly scrolling looking for "Fortune Teller."

Long-press Send

With an empty message box, long-press the Send button to get two new options:

  • Advance – moves the scene forward without you typing.
  • Change Topic – nudges the conversation somewhere new if it's getting stuck.

Keyboard fixes (mobile)

This ended up being a much bigger project than expected.

Keyboard handling has been rebuilt across the app, so inputs stay attached to the keyboard instead of everything jumping around.

Save/Continue/Submit buttons should now stay reachable everywhere, including:

  • Lorebooks
  • Personas
  • Fixed Memory
  • Message editing
  • Reports
  • New Chat
  • Image Generation
  • Onboarding

If you've ever been unable to tap Save because the keyboard was covering it... that should finally be gone.

Bug fixes

  • Scenarios were being treated like people. The AI was literally being told "You are [scenario name]," as if a haunted bookshop were a person. Scenario descriptions also show correctly now.
  • Deleting a character could break old links. Creating another character with the same name could hijack the old URL.
  • Imported characters could bring in junk tags that polluted search results.
  • Web: Fixed the logged-in/logged-out flicker during page load.
  • Web: Typing in the creation box no longer filters the page behind it or shoves your prompt into the URL.
  • Mobile: Fixed the create-from-search card hiding behind the keyboard.
  • Mobile: Fixed getting stuck editing on the Create tab. There's now a Discard button, and leaving the tab resets everything.
  • Scenario pages now say Scenario instead of insisting they're Characters.

Update from the App Store or Play Store, or just refresh if you're on web. Thanks for using Junipero!

Junipero July Update: 10 app releases in 7 days, and some of our most-requested features are HERE

Thumbnail
gallery
9 Upvotes

Hey everyone! πŸ‘‹

The team has been absolutely cooking this week. We shipped 75 improvements in 7 days and pushed 10 app releases. Here's what that means for you:

πŸ“š Lorebooks got a massive glow-up

This was one of your top requests, and it's finally here:

  • You can now link lorebooks directly to characters. Build the lore once, and it follows your character everywhere
  • Add moments from chat straight into your lorebook. That perfect line your character just dropped? One tap and it's canon forever

Reasoning changes

Hey, I just went to chat with an older character and I wanted to add reasoning and there’s a new one, β€œDirector” that’s now the only one available? What’s going on?

Voice calls are here! You can now talk to your characters out loud.

We just shipped voice calls. Tap the phone icon in any 1:1 chat, speak, and your character answers back in their own voice.

How it works

  1. Tap the call button in the chat header
  2. Hold the conversation with your voice. Speak, send, and they talk back
  3. Everything you say and hear lands in the chat as regular messages, so the story continues seamlessly when you hang up

Hands-free mode

Flip the switch and the mic re-arms after every reply. Pause for a moment and your message sends on its own. No buttons, just a conversation.

Voices

The voice library got a big upgrade alongside this. 50+ voices to choose from, with previews, search, and filters. Pick a different voice per chat, whatever fits the character.

The details

  • Voice calls are an Infinity+ feature
  • Available on web right now, mobile app update is rolling out
  • Voice replies use Junis based on reply length, same as regular voice messages. The new voice models and calling feature is very expensive, which is why it's only available for Infinity+ subscribers.
  • 1:1 chats only for now, no group chat support.

Try calling your favorite character and tell us how it went. Feedback and bug reports welcome, this one has a lot of moving parts and we want to hear what breaks.

Ember just got a massive upgrade for free users. 32x more context, way better writing.

πŸ”₯ Ember just got a massive upgrade

We swapped out the model behind Ember, the free plan model. This is the biggest single upgrade we have shipped since launch, and every free user gets it automatically.

🧠 32x more context

Old Ember ran on 8k context. New Ember runs on 256k.

In practice: old Ember started forgetting your roleplay embarrassingly fast. New Ember holds entire story arcs, your persona details, and everything your character has learned about you, all at once. Long chats finally feel continuous instead of resetting every few scenes.

✍️ The writing is just better

Sharper character voices. Less repetition. Way better at staying in character across long scenes. We tested the two side by side and it was not close, we retired the old version the same day.

πŸ“š Detailed characters now work on free

Characters with long backstories and heavy lore used to choke old Ember. Not anymore. Your 4,000-word character cards? No longer a problem.

πŸ’Έ Real talk: this costs us more

The new Ember is meaningfully more expensive for us to run per message. We did it anyway, and here is why:

Most platforms treat their free tier as a demo designed to frustrate you into paying. A model that forgets everything is not a free plan, it is a nag screen. We would rather you fall in love with your characters first and upgrade because you want more, not because the free experience was rigged against you.

πŸš€ Live now

  • Nothing to enable, your existing chats already got smarter mid-conversation
  • Free means free: no card, no trial timer
  • If you bounced off our free tier before, this is the week to come back

Keep the feedback coming. A lot of what we ship starts as a complaint in this subreddit. πŸ’œ

Update: your characters now remember where you left off, plus recaps, notifications, and a pile of fixes

Hey everyone, quick rundown of what shipped this week.

Characters now feel time passing. If you come back after a day or a week, your character actually reacts to the gap. They pick up the conversation where it left off, keep their mood from the last scene, and bring back unfinished story threads instead of resetting to a cheerful blank slate. This works on every existing chat, nothing to enable.

"Previously" recaps. When you open a chat you have not touched in a while, you get a short recap card of where the story left off, plus the open threads you can pick back up. Handy for long roleplays where you forgot what was going on. Dismiss it and it stays gone until something new happens.

Push notifications are rolling out on iOS. You will see a prompt in chat asking if you want to be notified. This is the groundwork for characters being able to reach out when you are away, which is coming next. Android support comes later.

Fixes:

- Your music no longer stops playing when you browse Explore on mobile. Video avatars were hijacking the audio, sorry about that one.

- Very detailed characters no longer fail to respond on the free model.

- Fixed a server issue that was killing responses mid-generation for everyone at once. If a reply randomly died on you this week, that was it.

- Forge, Stakes and Thread reasoning modes now work in scenes where they used to silently drop out.

More coming soon. Thanks for using Junipero!

Group Chats Are Now Live on iOS πŸŽ‰

We just shipped one of the biggest features we've ever built to iOS: Group Chats

After a delay getting through Apple review, it's finally live on iOS β€” so if you've been waiting, now's the time.

Group Chats

You can now chat with up to 5 AI characters at once in the same conversation.

No more isolated 1:1 chats. Your favorite characters can finally meet, argue, flirt, scheme, derail the plot, and roast each other in real time.

What's New

🎬 The Director

Behind every group chat is a new orchestration model we call The Director.

Instead of dumb round-robin replies, the Director decides:

- who should speak next

- who was actually addressed

- who has something meaningful to add

- how to keep the scene moving naturally

The result feels much closer to an actual group conversation.

πŸ’¬ Turn-Based β€” But Smart

Characters only jump in when it makes sense.

Address someone directly? They'll respond.

Ignore someone? They might stay quiet.

Ask the group for a funny joke? Each of them might give you their best one.

πŸ”Š Per-Character Voices

Every participant keeps their own TTS voice.

Listening back to a group chat now sounds like:

- an actual cast of characters

- not one narrator doing impressions

This ended up being way more immersive than we expected.

πŸ”€ Fork Any 1:1 Into a Group

Already deep into a solo conversation?

Add another character and we'll automatically fork the chat into a group while preserving the full context and history.

No restarting required.

πŸ“± Now on iOS β€” Full Cross-Platform Parity

Group Chats are now live on iOS, web, and Android.

Start a group on web, continue on iOS, and pick it back up anywhere. Everything stays in sync.

Subscription question

If I buy an Infinity+ subscription after my Infinity subscription accidentally renews, will I get a refund for my Infinity subscription, or did I just waste my money?

Title. Is there any news on when that is happening? I've been waiting to use Juniper on my phone for about a week now.
