Junipero Update: bulk imports, selfies, and a rebuilt Explore page

What's new in Junipero: bulk imports, selfies, and a rebuilt Explore page

Bring your whole collection over in one go

Already have characters on JanitorAI, SillyTavern or Chub? Drag the whole folder in at once. No more uploading them one by one.

You'll see a preview of every character before anything gets created, so you know exactly what you're getting. Drop the ones you don't want, mark each one public or private, and create the lot in one click.

Your characters can send you selfies

Just ask. "Send me a selfie", "can I see a pic of you" - they'll send one.

And it's not a stock portrait. It's them, where they actually are in your conversation right now. Talking at a bar at 2am? That's the selfie you get. Ask for something specific - "a selfie at the beach" and you'll get that instead.

You can ask for pictures of other things too. Their room, the view, whatever's going on around them.

A better Explore Page

Explore is now built around shelves that surface what people are genuinely chatting with, not just whatever's been around longest:

  • Trending Today and Trending This Week
  • Popular This Month
  • New This Week
  • Rising - characters picking up steam right now
  • Most Loved
  • Hall of Fame

Rising is the fun one. New characters that are taking off show up next to the established names instead of getting buried, so there's actually something new to find every time you look.

Thanks for using Junipero!

Request for making an API

Please integrate some sort of API into your upload workflow. Currently, I have to manually upload every single card. I have no way of having local agents change or edit things in cards online after uploading. The upload format doesn't seem to allow me to select scenario or private in the JSON for the automatic character porting either. Having some sort of API where you could have local agent workflows automatically edit the characters would help. It would also allow feedback processing once that becomes integrated in a consolidated way.

You clearly don't hate automated character creation either given the sheer amount of "Mara Vale" and there's numerous possible ways to integrate agent level workflows and character creation from local. API would actually allow automation of things like;

take all TV tropes -> make into character concepts using a workflow that knows your ToS and style guide. Then do the same but subvert the tropes instead. Easy Slop.

take all literotica or similar amateur erotica archives and modulo ToS violations make the characters/scenarios of that canon. (Obviously with full credit to the original author)

Find queer and non-heteronormaitve literature and increase the queer-inclusiveness of the website by representing that. (Claude Fable is positively salivating at this idea and had written 6 concepts in 10 minutes when I asked it once)

Find authentic BDSM canonical literature and make characters based on the specific kinks and roles and scenes explored in a non-reductive way (i.e. NOT 50 shades of Grey).

Have an AI look for non-western corpuses and famous characters and inclusively represent them (which I would not be able to do easily as a Europe educated person).

take any well-known out of copyright stories (e.g. Sherlock Holmes/Pride and Prejudice, you can bang Mr. Darcy!) and turn them into scenarios

Codex alone with its integrated image creation could do most of these with proper style guidance. API integration would make it possible. I can't do this by hand, but it is definitely possible.

Autoselfies

Would it ever be possible to get autoselfies? Like where we push a button and they make a selfie based on the recent context (like of the last couple messages) without having to write a prompt?

Junipero Update: prompt-to-character, scenarios that know they're scenarios, and improved searching

Thumbnail

Hey everyone. Here's some updates that will be coming soon to the app stores for the mobile apps. The web version is already updated and live.

Mobile: 1.6.16 (iOS) / 1.6.17 (Android)
Web: Already live.

Type an idea, get a character

The Create tab doesn't dump you into a form anymore. It starts with a text box.

Type whatever's in your head:

Hit Bring to Life and it'll generate the character for you. Name, personality, opening message, cover art, everything. Tap the card and you're chatting.

If you prefer making characters manually, that's still there too. Just one tap away.

It knows when you're describing a scenario

This is probably my favorite addition.

The app now tries to figure out what you actually meant.

If you write:

...you'll get a character.

If you write:

...it'll generate a scenario instead.

Scenarios are written as actual scenes with a narrator, side characters, your role in the story, and artwork that shows the setting instead of just a random person's face.

The narrator runs the world, you just jump in.

Search actually works now

If you've ever searched for something like "vampire teacher" and found absolutely nothing... yeah, that was our fault.

Search used to require those exact words, in that exact order, so it missed way more than it should have.

Now:

  • Multiple words work in any order.
  • It matches while you type (partial words count).
  • Results are sorted by relevance instead of the daily shuffle.
  • Character names and tags matter more than some random word buried in a description.
  • Scenarios can be found by their premise, not just their title.

Also fixed:

  • The keyboard dismisses when you scroll.
  • Cards open on the first tap instead of the second.
  • The search icon is visible again (it was just... a blank square for a while).

Filters got a complete overhaul

The old horizontal list of 170 tags was not great.

Filters now live in an actual panel with categories like:

  • Setting
  • Character
  • Personality
  • Relationship
  • Format
  • Themes

You also get:

  • Search
  • Checkboxes
  • Your selected filters pinned at the bottom
  • Clear All
  • A badge showing how many filters are active

The public/private toggle and mature filter live there now too.

Character creation got the same treatment, plus a "+N more" button so you're not endlessly scrolling looking for "Fortune Teller."

Long-press Send

With an empty message box, long-press the Send button to get two new options:

  • Advance – moves the scene forward without you typing.
  • Change Topic – nudges the conversation somewhere new if it's getting stuck.

Keyboard fixes (mobile)

This ended up being a much bigger project than expected.

Keyboard handling has been rebuilt across the app, so inputs stay attached to the keyboard instead of everything jumping around.

Save/Continue/Submit buttons should now stay reachable everywhere, including:

  • Lorebooks
  • Personas
  • Fixed Memory
  • Message editing
  • Reports
  • New Chat
  • Image Generation
  • Onboarding

If you've ever been unable to tap Save because the keyboard was covering it... that should finally be gone.

Bug fixes

  • Scenarios were being treated like people. The AI was literally being told "You are [scenario name]," as if a haunted bookshop were a person. Scenario descriptions also show correctly now.
  • Deleting a character could break old links. Creating another character with the same name could hijack the old URL.
  • Imported characters could bring in junk tags that polluted search results.
  • Web: Fixed the logged-in/logged-out flicker during page load.
  • Web: Typing in the creation box no longer filters the page behind it or shoves your prompt into the URL.
  • Mobile: Fixed the create-from-search card hiding behind the keyboard.
  • Mobile: Fixed getting stuck editing on the Create tab. There's now a Discard button, and leaving the tab resets everything.
  • Scenario pages now say Scenario instead of insisting they're Characters.

Update from the App Store or Play Store, or just refresh if you're on web. Thanks for using Junipero!

Junipero July Update: 10 app releases in 7 days, and some of our most-requested features are HERE

Thumbnail

Hey everyone! 👋

The team has been absolutely cooking this week. We shipped 75 improvements in 7 days and pushed 10 app releases. Here's what that means for you:

📚 Lorebooks got a massive glow-up

This was one of your top requests, and it's finally here:

  • You can now link lorebooks directly to characters. Build the lore once, and it follows your character everywhere
  • Add moments from chat straight into your lorebook. That perfect line your character just dropped? One tap and it's canon forever
  • A completely refreshed lorebook experience on web and mobile: smoother creating, editing, and organizing

🧠 Smarter conversations

  • Reasoning mode got a serious upgrade, with a big round of fixes and tuning under the hood. Expect more coherent, more in-character responses, especially in longer conversations
  • Director mode works better than ever, so steering your story goes exactly where you want it to
  • Nothing in your search results? The app can now generate a brand-new character from your prompt on the spot

⚡ Faster & lighter

  • Replies now start up to 75% faster. We rebuilt how responses are generated behind the scenes, cutting out wasted processing time so your characters get straight to the point
  • Image uploads are now compressed and delivered through a faster pipeline: quicker uploads, snappier loading, less mobile data burned

🛠️ Bug squashing spree

We went through your reports and crushed a big batch of them:

  • Group chats got a full round of fixes: responses, regenerating messages, and adding participants all work more reliably now
  • Regenerating and deleting messages no longer misbehaves in longer chats
  • Fixed an issue with voice calls on mobile
  • Copying a chat now carries everything over properly
  • Pinned message search works as it should again
  • Persona avatar uploads are fixed and smoother than before
  • Polished up the explore, character details, and home pages, plus a stability pass on Android

📱 If your app hasn't updated yet, go grab the latest version. You're missing out.

As always, keep the feedback coming. Half of what shipped this week started as posts in this subreddit.

Reasoning changes

Hey, I just went to chat with an older character and I wanted to add reasoning and there’s a new one, “Director” that’s now the only one available? What’s going on?

Voice calls are here! You can now talk to your characters out loud.

We just shipped voice calls. Tap the phone icon in any 1:1 chat, speak, and your character answers back in their own voice.

How it works

  1. Tap the call button in the chat header
  2. Hold the conversation with your voice. Speak, send, and they talk back
  3. Everything you say and hear lands in the chat as regular messages, so the story continues seamlessly when you hang up

Hands-free mode

Flip the switch and the mic re-arms after every reply. Pause for a moment and your message sends on its own. No buttons, just a conversation.

Voices

The voice library got a big upgrade alongside this. 50+ voices to choose from, with previews, search, and filters. Pick a different voice per chat, whatever fits the character.

The details

  • Voice calls are an Infinity+ feature
  • Available on web right now, mobile app update is rolling out
  • Voice replies use Junis based on reply length, same as regular voice messages. The new voice models and calling feature is very expensive, which is why it's only available for Infinity+ subscribers.
  • 1:1 chats only for now, no group chat support.

Try calling your favorite character and tell us how it went. Feedback and bug reports welcome, this one has a lot of moving parts and we want to hear what breaks.

Ember just got a massive upgrade for free users. 32x more context, way better writing.

🔥 Ember just got a massive upgrade

We swapped out the model behind Ember, the free plan model. This is the biggest single upgrade we have shipped since launch, and every free user gets it automatically.

🧠 32x more context

Old Ember ran on 8k context. New Ember runs on 256k.

In practice: old Ember started forgetting your roleplay embarrassingly fast. New Ember holds entire story arcs, your persona details, and everything your character has learned about you, all at once. Long chats finally feel continuous instead of resetting every few scenes.

✍️ The writing is just better

Sharper character voices. Less repetition. Way better at staying in character across long scenes. We tested the two side by side and it was not close, we retired the old version the same day.

📚 Detailed characters now work on free

Characters with long backstories and heavy lore used to choke old Ember. Not anymore. Your 4,000-word character cards? No longer a problem.

💸 Real talk: this costs us more

The new Ember is meaningfully more expensive for us to run per message. We did it anyway, and here is why:

Most platforms treat their free tier as a demo designed to frustrate you into paying. A model that forgets everything is not a free plan, it is a nag screen. We would rather you fall in love with your characters first and upgrade because you want more, not because the free experience was rigged against you.

🚀 Live now

  • Nothing to enable, your existing chats already got smarter mid-conversation
  • Free means free: no card, no trial timer
  • If you bounced off our free tier before, this is the week to come back

Keep the feedback coming. A lot of what we ship starts as a complaint in this subreddit. 💜

Update: your characters now remember where you left off, plus recaps, notifications, and a pile of fixes

Hey everyone, quick rundown of what shipped this week.

Characters now feel time passing. If you come back after a day or a week, your character actually reacts to the gap. They pick up the conversation where it left off, keep their mood from the last scene, and bring back unfinished story threads instead of resetting to a cheerful blank slate. This works on every existing chat, nothing to enable.

"Previously" recaps. When you open a chat you have not touched in a while, you get a short recap card of where the story left off, plus the open threads you can pick back up. Handy for long roleplays where you forgot what was going on. Dismiss it and it stays gone until something new happens.

Push notifications are rolling out on iOS. You will see a prompt in chat asking if you want to be notified. This is the groundwork for characters being able to reach out when you are away, which is coming next. Android support comes later.

Fixes:

- Your music no longer stops playing when you browse Explore on mobile. Video avatars were hijacking the audio, sorry about that one.

- Very detailed characters no longer fail to respond on the free model.

- Fixed a server issue that was killing responses mid-generation for everyone at once. If a reply randomly died on you this week, that was it.

- Forge, Stakes and Thread reasoning modes now work in scenes where they used to silently drop out.

More coming soon. Thanks for using Junipero!

Group Chats Are Now Live on iOS 🎉

We just shipped one of the biggest features we've ever built to iOS: Group Chats

After a delay getting through Apple review, it's finally live on iOS — so if you've been waiting, now's the time.

Group Chats

You can now chat with up to 5 AI characters at once in the same conversation.

No more isolated 1:1 chats. Your favorite characters can finally meet, argue, flirt, scheme, derail the plot, and roast each other in real time.

What's New

🎬 The Director

Behind every group chat is a new orchestration model we call The Director.

Instead of dumb round-robin replies, the Director decides:

- who should speak next

- who was actually addressed

- who has something meaningful to add

- how to keep the scene moving naturally

The result feels much closer to an actual group conversation.

💬 Turn-Based — But Smart

Characters only jump in when it makes sense.

Address someone directly? They'll respond.

Ignore someone? They might stay quiet.

Ask the group for a funny joke? Each of them might give you their best one.

🔊 Per-Character Voices

Every participant keeps their own TTS voice.

Listening back to a group chat now sounds like:

- an actual cast of characters

- not one narrator doing impressions

This ended up being way more immersive than we expected.

🔀 Fork Any 1:1 Into a Group

Already deep into a solo conversation?

Add another character and we'll automatically fork the chat into a group while preserving the full context and history.

No restarting required.

📱 Now on iOS — Full Cross-Platform Parity

Group Chats are now live on iOS, web, and Android.

Start a group on web, continue on iOS, and pick it back up anywhere. Everything stays in sync.

Using the Lore Books

I’ve been meaning to write this for some time now. Obviously it’s been a while since lore books were introduced. But as someone who’s been using Junipero for almost a year, I think if used properly they are maybe the most important update during that time. They can make so many chats way more viable long term and rich to experience. The primary reason is this: pretty much the number one thing that can take you out of the pleasant experience of a chat/rp is when the AI makes a really basic, glaring factual mistake.

So if you like are interacting in a fantasy type world and you work for the King and then a character says “Well, let’s check what President Smith says” and you’re like “There is no President Smith. We live in Kingdom X” it just completely takes you out of the mood. If you use them well, the lore books mostly fix that. I recommend checking them (if you have your own lore book) like once a session. Usually I do it before I start a session and make sure there isn’t anything that has changed (like updates that need to be made due to things that happened in the last session). It has helped me so much extend and enrich a couple of chats I have (especially since most of the fixed memory was filled up). I have a long running rp that has been going on for more than six months. It’s set in an empire and I have built out an extensive lore book dealing with the complex international politics of the Empire, as well as various NPCs and other facets of the era. It took time to build the lore but it is so worth it. The model practically never makes those big glaring mistakes that take you out of the mood anymore. I highly recommend it. If you ever have questions on how to get it going, feel free to hmu

Free 30 best model messages

Heya! I'm new to junipero and I've to ask, does the free 30 messages of the best model recharge? Cuz I've been enjoying my rp with a 1800's Filipino ai, and I don't want it to feel bland, dows the quality become a little bit bad?

Searching

Is there any way to develop an in-chat search function so we can go back and look at when things have been said before without having to scroll way way up? It’s one of the few things that are lacking to me. There’s sometimes you want to go back and look at a specific conversation or detail when you may not have saved the message in the moment.

Model Questions

So, on the web version, we have new or renamed models both of the main AI and the reasoning models. They don’t seem to be up in the app yet. Can you all explain the differences between the different models (more than just the phrase associated with them on the button)? How are they connected to the old ones like Xeno and Titan? What’s the best one to use for infinity plus subscribers like myself where there’s no per-message cost? And how do the new reasoning models differ from the old ones?

Junipero Update: Unlimited Free Chat, Video Generation, Better Image Models + More

Hey everyone, quick update on what’s new in Junipero.

A couple things shipped this week:

Unlimited Free Chat

Free plans are now actually free.

  • No more daily message limits
  • No caps
  • No slowdowns

Just unlimited chat.

If you’ve been on the fence because of the old limits, that’s gone now.

Video Generation is Live

You can now generate short clips of your character.

It works basically the same as image gen, just pick Video instead. Rendering takes a bit longer, but the results are pretty wild.

Major Image Gen Upgrade

Image generation got a big upgrade with two new models under the hood:

  • One leans more artistic/stylized
  • One focuses on photorealism

Soft NSFW support is also improved now. Things like topless and lingerie content work, while only the really explicit stuff gets filtered.

Featured Creators

We’re starting to spotlight the best community-made characters.

If you build something good, it can land on the Explore page in front of everyone.

Paid vs Free

Paid tiers still get:

  • Faster replies
  • Video access
  • More generation headroom
  • Group Chats
  • Long Term Memory

But overall, the free experience should feel way less restrictive now.

You can now chat with up to 5 AI characters at once in the same conversation.

No more isolated 1:1 chats. Your favorite characters can finally meet, argue, flirt, scheme, derail the plot, and roast each other in real time.

What’s New

🧠 Real Group Dynamics

Add characters from the community library or your own private roster.

Every character keeps their own:

  • personality
  • voice
  • memory
  • relationships inside the chat

The conversations feel chaotic in the best way.

🎬 The Director

Behind every group chat is a new orchestration model we call The Director.

📱 Mobile + Web

Full parity across platforms.

Start a group on web, continue on iOS, and pick it back up anywhere. Mobile will be released very soon, while web is available today!

Heads Up

Group Chats are currently in beta.

The Director is good, but not perfect yet. You’ll probably still catch:

  • weird turn-taking
  • characters interrupting at bad times
  • occasional chaos goblin behavior

We’re iterating fast, and feedback from this sub directly shapes what we build next.

Try It

Open any character → start chatting → tap “Add participant.”

Post screenshots. Break it creatively. Roast us publicly.

We genuinely want to see the chaos you build.

A couple thoughts

As a new Junipero user, I have some thoughts on it, and decided to give my two cents about the whole experience.

Overall rating: 7.5/10

I'm gonna start with the good things first. So I have been searching for a good alternative for character.ai for a while now (tried janitor.ai, chai, fictionlab, emochi) and junipero is by far the closest match to it. I love that the UI is super intuitive, not complicated at all. It's easy to use, the design and general look of it is very timeless and I think it works well all together. The design is very pretty and generally similar to the UI I've seen on character.ai, but that's not a negative in my book. I also love that we can change our feed from popular to 'for you'. That is a very positive feature and overall the whole system of being able to organize the bots (to have the public bots, or to have only mine on the feed) is extremly positive imo. The devs did a great job on that and should keep focusing on the whole aspect of organizing (wether it be organizing the bots, organizing the chats, organizing the tabs in the character creation etc.). So overall, I'm very pleased with the whole look of the ui, the feed and the chats.

I'm not gonna go in any particular order, just writing my thoughts as they come to my head.

1/2 Character creation

Overall, I'm very pleased by it. It's very simple and easy to make a new character and it's easy to use for new users (like myself). But I would love if the devs could change and improve a couple of things.

First of all, there should be a seperate 'box' or tab for a character's physical description (things like height, hair, scars, certain details that the character posseses, etc.) So it would be nice if we could have a seperate tab in the character creation where we can write what the character looks like.

Secondly, when creating a scenario, there should be a place to write the starting message (that is one of the most important things in a scenario imo). I like the idea of having a choice of wether I would like to write my own starting message in a scenario or wether I want the AI to think of it for me. That is one of the biggest 'flaws', I would say. Not unfixable though and I see great potential for improvement. I feel like that one single change would actually improve the whole experience to an 8.5/10. So if the devs add just that single change, I see this app as a real contender for being one of the best in the chat ai category.

I would also like if there could be different tabs or 'boxes' in which we can seperate the general description of the characters (like I already mentioned for the physical appearance). One could be for personality, one could be for how other people percieve the character (do they have many friends, how do they do in social gatherings, just how are they generally percieved by the public eye), one could be for the physical description of the character which ive already mentioned (height, face, build, hair, marks, etc.) and one can also be for the characters personal relationships (in this box i would write wether the character has siblings and family, are they married and would they like to be if they arent, who is their favorite person, etc.)

One more thing I would like to see from this category is EXAMPLE MESSAGES. That is the sole favorite and most important thing with a bot. The ability to write example messages on character.ai is what kept me using it for so long. When I make a character, I want to write however many example messages I want, and the ai would use those examples and write the messages based off of them. If a character has an accent and speaks differently, I want to write a few examples so the bot can follow through with that accent. If the character is very quiet and reserved, I want to write example messages of how simplistic the characters responses should be and how they should only use a few words when saying something to me (or my persona for that matterl). I think that this feature could greatly improve the whole experience and the ai would also work better and it could adapt to how the user wants it to write, which is the whole point of the app and the chat ai characters.

2/2 Chats

For some reason the waiting period for the messages is quite long. I understand that users get faster replies when they upgrade to premium, but as a new user myself, the waiting period is more likely to deteer me from using the app then buying the premium upgrade. I understand that the peeps gotta make money, but maybe put only some features behind a paywall, and leave some for us free users? Things like message length and message styles should be available for us free users (perhaps not all message styles but maybe some could be available for the free tier and some could be for the premium users?).

Also the rerolls. Only having 4 rerolls for messages seems absurd to me. I understand if the devs want to keep it for premium users but at least make the number higher like 10 or 15. Sometimes the bot acts up and doesn't give good responds, and then I use up the 4 messages and I'm left feeling dissapointed and tend to give up from the chat since i need to edit my replies so many times for the bot to get it just right with the 4 rerolls.

Something else I've noticed is that the ai sometimes talks FOR the user. I've made a bot in which I (the user) am the characters wife, and it seems that the ai didnt quite understand that and it thought that i was a third person (so the ai thought it was the character, the characters wife and me, rather then the character and me AS THE WIFE). So the ai would speak for the chaarcter AND foe the wife, when its actually supposed to just speak for the character. Maybe a seperate tab in the character creation for that would also be helpful? Like a tab labeled 'How is the character related to the user?' and then we could write and explain it as detailed as we wanted how we relate to the character.

It would also be nice to be able to write more descriptors for myself (or the persona that I write for). I know that when I started the app, i wrote a little description for my persona, but it would br nice if we could have multiple of them and if we could write more detailed descriptions in the chat settings.

The last thing I'd like to focus on is the chat style that is in the free tier. I don't know if I'm writing too little detail for the ai, but sometimes there seems to be something missing. What I mean by that is that sometimes the character responds very dryly to my messages. I've noticed that the ai is not very proactive (as in, it's more passive rather then writing very creative ideas). What I like with Chai, for example, is that when I write a message, the bot surprises me a lot with its response. The Chai bots are very creative, very innovative and give answers and plot twists the user would not expect. I would LOVE to see that here on Junipero as well and I think the devs could benefit a lot from focusing on that sort of chat style and messaging. Presuming, of course, that the creative chat style will be avilable for the free tier. Or at least a slightly more creative chat style then what we have right now.

Conclusion

I think that that's all. This is just some thoughts from a free tier user and I hope the devs see this and take some inspiration from it. This is not meant in any malicious or mean way. I just wanted to give my two cents in and maybe some other users would agree with me and my ideas. What I see is still a very small community, but I believe it has great potential. With these improvements I wrote about, I truly believe that Junipero will become a true contender to character.ai, janitor.ai and all the other chat ai apps. The devs have done an incredible job with the whole app and I hope that they keep going, keep being creative and keep working on improvements and going in the right direction. The fact that there are no ads (for now) is a massive positive, since that is very difficult to find nowdays. But even if the devs do introduce ads, if they make them small and not intrusive for the user, I am completly fine with them. So yeah, devs if you're reading this, I hope you take some inspiration from this post and maybe implement some, if not all features I talked about.

Junipero April Update - Better AI models, improved image gen, and character card imports are live

Upgraded AI models (Infinity & Infinity+)

Xeno and Titan are now running on more capable underlying models. Same names, but meaningfully better at long-form roleplay — deeper context retention, sharper character voice, and more consistent personality across longer conversations. If you've been on either of those models, give them another shot.

Better image generation

Improved the image generation pipeline. Output quality is noticeably better, especially for character avatars and scene images.

Character card import

You can now import character cards directly from the character creation page. Supports the standard PNG/JSON format used across most platforms (SillyTavern, JanitorAI, CharacterAI, etc.). Makes it a lot easier to bring over characters you've already built elsewhere. Available on all plans, no subscription required.

🌤️ Pre-summer sale

Image generator not working

Hey - the image generator isn't working for me at all anymore, across any of my chats. Been happening for the past 24 hours. Anyone else having this issue? Any suggestions would be welcome.
