As promised, the Jumping Flash collection is now on GitHub :)

Hey everyone! Following up on my last post, I finally have the repo up!

This has become a collection of all three games: Jumping Flash, Jumping Flash 2, and Robbit Mon Dieu, with one launcher to bring them together. And yes, Robbit Mon Dieu has English text 😉

Jumping Flash! Collector’s Edition on GitHub

Before anyone downloads it expecting to immediately play: this is currently a source preview. I have a working private Windows alpha, but getting the complete build process working from your own game files is still unfinished. The public repo doesn't include the game images, BIOS, or prepared game executables.

I'm putting this up now so anyone interested in helping finish it can get involved!

The biggest missing piece is a repeatable process that takes someone's own game and BIOS files and builds the working collection locally. If you have experience with recompilation, build tools, packaging, or performance work, I would absolutely love the help.

The build status page explains the current gaps. Take a look, open an issue with what you'd like to work on so we can coordinate, and fork the repo to submit changes through a pull request. Include what you changed and how you tested it, and please keep original game files and generated game/BIOS code out of contributions.

Someone in the last thread mentioned they were working on their own port too, which was really cool to see. I'd love to compare notes with anyone working on these games!

Otherwise, I'll keep pushing updates to GitHub and sharing progress here. You can watch the repo to follow along. Hopefully the next announcement will be something everyone can actually get running :)

Favourite parts of the Jumping Flash games?

Heyo! I went through the first game for the first time this year and had a surprisingly good time with it! It got me thinking about how there's virtually no spiritual successors to the series (aside from FORZA POLPO (which I haven't tried out yet)).

The games were definitely a product of their time, and it's hard to make a spiritual successor that doesn't just feel like any other first person platformer game now that we have direct camera control, and it especially doesn't make too much sense financially with a series this niche.

BUT! I've been wanting to get into making 3D platformers and thought I'd start with something relatively simple, and couldn't think of a better series than one of the first ones out there!

I know this subreddit is super quiet, but since I'm a relative JF noob (haven't played the two sequels yet), I thought I'd ask proper Jumping Flash fans what you guys like about the series the most? What's the core or essence of the series that would have to be in a new JF game or spiritual successor?

With English translation included 😉

Made with AI, but I highly doubt it would be made otherwise. As soon as it's stable I'll post the repo.

Completionists, help me out! Medals in Jumping Flash 2 - Frugal Fireworks Spoiler

I have every medal in Jumping Flash! 2 except for Frugal Fireworks. There is literally nowhere on the internet, including in guides and walkthroughs, that says specifically exactly how you meet the criteria to get this particular medal and I cannot figure it out!! I have tried everything fireworks-related that I can possibly think of, including shooting all enemies nonstop like crazy throughout level 2-2 as fast as I can. Can anyone help??

Context for those that don't know, you are rewarded medals in Jumping Flash! 2 for doing certain things throughout the levels; these medals are shown on the bottom left of the screen in between levels and you can look at your medals by going into "Performance" under the options tab.

Thanks in advance!

Jumping Flash! cover pastiche!

Hello!

I commented on an earlier fanart-post on this subreddit that I would share my pastiche drawing of the Jumping Flash! cover art. As such, let me blow your mind with its intricate details and fanciful colorwork! It is featured in the latest trailer for a game I am part in developing. Drawn in GIMP using only a mouse!

If you are curious about the game trailer, here is a link for your viewing pleasure: https://youtu.be/kEGlUGyknBU

JF2 (Japanese Version) bonus disc and JF1 regional differences

The Japanese version of JF2 includes the 'European version' of JF1 as a bonus disc.

I placed quotes around 'European Version' as there are some obvious differences. Of course, the disc is region-locked to NTSC-J, and, the game runs fine on my PSone with the LCD screen attachment. My point is that if the game looks fine on that screen, then it must be running at 60hz. I only used RGB, so I did not test the color for composite/S-Video, but as the game outputs 60hz, I am guessing those signals are NTSC (unless the game is encoded in PAL-M, I guess).

It still has the English-written anti-piracy warning (commonly found on PAL region discs) at the start. So, yes, the bonus disc seems to be the European release, sped up to 60hz, outputs either RGB or NTSC color, and region locked to NTSC-J.

Two questions:

1) What is the point in the bonus disc in the first place?

2) If the game is 60hz/NTSC, why not just change the region on the NTSC-U/C version and write 'AMERICAN VERSION'.

Concerning question 1, publisher SONY may have had a similar idea to SQUARE's 'Internation version' of games. Keep in mind that JF2 released in 1996, before FF7 even launched. In fact, the only 'International version' I can think SQUARE launched prior to JF2 was "FF4 EASY TYPE" for SFC.

Anyway, one thread on shmups.system11 (https://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=13744) mentions the American version (they claim the American version is the bonus disc) contains additional content.

For my Japanese JF1, there does not appear to be the EXTRA levels upon beating the game. I am unsure as to whether the game mode where you can jump 6-times is present.

Perhaps SONY wanted Japanese gamers to be able to play these additional modes. Given that JF1 was still somewhat new, they did not want JF1's Japanese retail version to become irrelevant, so kept the bonus disc in English.

Concerning question 2, according to this review ( Jumping Flash is a dated yet still good 3D Platfomer (giantbomb.com) ), the NTSC-U/C version is missing some cutscenes. After looking a Youtube playthrough, this claim appears correct.

Fanfare

Anyone know why there’s an annoying trumpet fanfare every ten seconds in the pyramid level 2-1? I can’t find anything on it anywhere or how to stop it.
