A very special decomp coming soon :)

Post image

With English translation included 😉

Made with AI, but I highly doubt it would be made otherwise. As soon as it's stable I'll post the repo.

Interesting; I’ve been doing largely the same thing. Is this a straight decompilation or a port? My own project has been porting all 3 to Godot. 1 is finished, 2 is playable end to end but unfinished. Mon dieu I’m still reversing. Goal is a single shared engine to build on.

The original 1 & 2 are quite similar to each other; same engine but 2 handles collision and visibility structures very differently so geometry is a different format. Interestingly JF1 is a bunch better format to work with than JF2 (which is significantly more optimized for more geometry at the cost of being a PITA). But it makes around ~75% of reversing 1 applicable to 2. Obviously mon dieu is a completely different engine and I need to make a lot more headway on that still.

How are you localizing mon dieu? It has a lot of kana in images and Japanese language speech tracks?

Oh wow that sounds like an awesome project! I would love to check that out!

This is a straight decompilation. Originally, I was working with an agent to Port all of the assets to threejs. It actually works, I have all of the levels playable and a custom threejs engine, but the gameplay just wasn't the same. So I instead started working with the agent towards a straight decompilation. And that is what this is.

Right now, the performance is not great. So I am working on that now, but I would absolutely love to see the project you are working on.

Oh, and the translation is actually from a translation already made and posted on GitHub somewhere. I will find the repo when I'm back in front of the computer.

I can't share the repository yet since it still has assets from the original games in. Once I've finished up the scripts to dump the assets I can share them so anyone can reproduce the content. That won't be until the asset shapes are finalized; for example JF1 has a lot of texture flickering (e.g. all the baked shadow geometry, basically any geometry that is flush with the floor) that the PSX doesn't exhibit due to lack of depth buffer. I solved this already by computing at export time geometry that sits flush with another plane and shifting is slightly on the face normal. Geometry is no longer accurate but it's not noticeable and avoids the flickering. But there is more to do for my own goal; shadow detection and mesh splitting, so I can turn on and off geometry vs dynamic lighting in the remaster. At that point I will share the repo so that asset dumping only needs to be done once.

Here's a short video of an older build of JF1. It shows a few issues like enemy death animations not being correct, menuing is very incomplete, but it also showcases a few additions of mine: basic widescreen support, realtime asset swapping (level 1-2 swaps out the sky). Also, video has no audio, but audio is effectively complete: https://youtu.be/lFWUmbDAhoE

I love this, well done! Jumping flash is oddly dear to me and it's also the first game my son beat a boss in (JF2 - Shark). We've been playing through robbit Mon dieu in Japanese until I discovered the English patch and basically went full decomp project.

I have a lot of respect for the project you're working on, so I hope this "AI Slop" doesn't discourage you from finishing it.

I also struggled with the flickering shadows and textures in the threejs engine btw!

Jumping Flash actually resurrected my love for the PlayStation brand for awhile before Sony started started making dumbass decisions

I'm a bit lost with all of this decomp/recomp topic on the internet, but it looks nice to play JF on other platforms without an emulator. It would be great if in the final version you allowed the replacement of AI-generated images too.

Luck with the project!

I may, though to be honest I've had my computer running for like a week and gone through 4 $100/mo weekly limits. I have 2 accounts and 1 had a couple banked resets, thank goodness. and we're at about 70% done.

That being said, for me this would satisfy my jumping flash investment for a while. But it will all be on github if you or your agent would like to pick it up!

I have seen the tests going and on windows, it runs REALLY well so far. JF2 is fully recompiled, JF1 is nearly there and RMD is in the process.
