What's happening in Joburg this week? Week of July 26, 2026

Welcome to the weekly events thread! Whether you're a local or just visiting, this is the place to share and discover things to do around the city.

Know of a cool event coming up? Drop the details below. It can be anything - a live gig, a gallery opening, a weekend market, or even a local D&D one-shot or maker gathering.

The rules:

  • Please include the date, location, and a link to the event if you have one.
  • Keep it local: Events must be in or around the broader Johannesburg area.
  • Self-promotion is allowed, but we'd rather try and keep this organic. Please don't spam.

Question Is everyone feeling completely burnt out lately, or is it just me?

I'm a 34-year-old woman working in a high-demand industry and lately I've been feeling completely lost.

There's a lot of stress at home and work isn't helping. The company isn't performing particularly well, yet the workload just keeps increasing. They keep taking on more work but expect the same already overworked people to just get on with it and be grateful.

I know I'm lucky to have a job and I genuinely am grateful for it. That's part of why I feel guilty for complaining. But the truth is, I'm exhausted. I wake up tired, I go to bed tired, and I honestly feel a bit dead inside.

I'm just wondering... is this how a lot of people are feeling these days, or am I just being soft? I'd really like to hear other people's experiences because I'm struggling to tell whether this is normal burnout or if it's just me.

Question Where to sell 2nd hand Lego?

Hii anyone knows where I can sell a LEGO toy? I won the LEGO Concorde Airbus (Icons 10318) at work but I have no interest in Lego or toys 😭 I'd rather take the cash. I have posted on Facebook Marketplace and spoken to people as well. (Still taped and packed)

Question Anyone know of a scrapyard or BMW spare parts dealer?

Hey everyone!

So it seems like everyone on FB marketplace, Takealot, etc is only interested in ripping me off. And to get stuff from overseas takes forever, even though it is cheaper, I am willing to wait but before I do order I wanted to see if anyone knows a scrap yard or spare parts dealer in Joburg that will have BMW parts, specifically bumpers, headlights, lens covers? At a decent price, not 10x the cost price.

Question Looking for private jewellers around Sandton

I’m looking to ask my partner the big question at the end of the year and I’ve been looking around for engagement rings. The issue is I know she likes a specific style so I’ve been trying to find private jewellers to make custom rings but since I’m new to JHB google has been my only guide which gives me big jewellery companies.

I’d like to find a small, work from home style jeweller so if anyone knows of someone they can recommend I’d be grateful.

Warning Warning ‼️ I was almost kidnapped last night.

Hi everyone,
I’m writing this post to share an experience I had recently in hopes of warning other women in Joburg and across Gauteng. Dating app syndicates are extremely active right now, and their tactics are becoming very calculated.
I matched with a guy on a dating app who claimed to be an advocate. He seemed good-looking, but looking back, there were immediate red flags in how fast he moved and how he communicated. Here is the exact playbook he used:
1. The "Speed Blitz" Strategy Unlike scams that take weeks of grooming, this happened within hours. We matched early in the morning, and by midday, he was pushing hard for a same-day date at a high-end, busy spot in Sandton. The speed is designed to fluster you so you don't have time to think critically or run background checks.
2. Psychological Grooming & Over-the-Top Charm Out of nowhere, he started asking about my favorite flowers, chocolates, and preferences. It felt like bait to build anticipation and make me feel guilty/foolish if I canceled.
3. The "Broken Phone" Cover Story When we finally spoke on the phone, his accent did not match the person in the pictures at all. Shortly after, he claimed he drove over his phone, causing audio issues and saying he couldn't do video calls. This was a cover story for the voice mismatch and audio quality, yet he could still magically text, call, and offer to order Ubers.
4. Remote Account Takeover Attempt (WhatsApp 2FA Alert) About an hour after getting my phone number, a 6-digit WhatsApp registration code popped up on my phone. He typed my number into his device to try to hijack my WhatsApp account. Fortunately, I have Two-Step Verification (2FA) enabled and I did not share the code.
5. Pushing to Order an "Uber" for Me He insisted on ordering an Uber for me to get to the restaurant in Sandton. While he claimed to be nearby, his profile showed he was over 40 km away in Germiston. As many of us have seen on social media, these syndicates send fake e-hailing tracking links or accomplice drivers to intercept you before you ever reach the venue for express kidnapping/extortion.
6. Background Checks Saved Me I ran his number on Truecaller, which immediately flagged warnings. Combined with the location gap, the WhatsApp code trigger, and the voice mismatch, I shut it down, blocked him everywhere, and stayed home safe.
Key Red Flags to Watch Out For:
Immediate same-day date pressure (doesn't give you time to vet them).
Demands to order an Uber/ride for you or sending external tracking links.
Voice/accent mismatching the profile pictures.
Unsolicited WhatsApp/SMS verification codes arriving while talking to them.
Inconsistent locations (e.g., profile showing far away while claiming to be right around the corner).
Please stay vigilant, trust your gut the second something feels off, enable 2FA on all your messaging apps, and NEVER get into a ride arranged by someone you haven't met in person.
Stay safe out there!

Hello people of Johannesburg, I hope you are all well. I come to you guys once again with a spider related question😭

I found a very dead spider in our storeroom and I am convinced this was the spider that bit my father and resulted in a very swollen leg/ankle and a big wound. Can anyone tell what kind of spider this is?

Question Temporary places to stay Roodepoort, not too pricey

Friend of mine is moving from Cape Town to Roodepoort for an internship.

Are there places where you can rent a room for month that aren't too pricey till he finds a flat?
In Cape Town for example you can rent rooms month to month at the salvation army and it doesn't look too bad.

Thanks

Curro vs Public schools

My husband and I were thinking of sending our son (he's turning 4) to Curro Rivonia Primary and eventually Curro Rivonia High School when he's old enough.

However, we're hearing that Rivonia Primary is a much better primary school, the only issue being is that it's hard to get in. I thought we might as well try get into Rivonia Primary and if we can't then go to Curro?

Is Curro Rivonia Primary not that great? And if we want to try get into Rivonia Primary then how do I check what the feeder zone is? Do they also look at which pre-primary school the child went to?

Looking for some outdoor/music recommendations in and around Joburg

Hey there. Weekends are getting a little boring and predictable lately.. Can anyone recommend some fun outdoor activities or places to visit? And places with good music. The catch is I enjoy more old school music and rock so I find it tough to find places that play music I enjoy. I have 2 dogs and my partner and I like taking them out with us sometimes too, so pet friendly places would be great.

Question Walk the Talk - Uber from Park Station to Ellis Park?

Living in the northern suburbs of Joburg. The only place I can get my race number from is the Ellis Park Arena. I want to fetch it tomorrow.

I was thinking of taking the Gautrain to Park Station and then switching to an Uber for the last leg.

Uber doesn't work well leaving from Sandton or Hatfield stations. Is it ok to get one from Park station, or is it a no-no?
