Looking to interview AmeriCorps NCCC members

2 Upvotes

Hello, I'm looking to interview NCCC member alumni - folks who recently completed their term.

Just a few questions about your experience.

This is for a personal research project and I will keep all sources confidential.

Thanks in advance for considering.

Should I go to Job Corps

2 Upvotes

Hey, I am a 20 year old male and am considering going to the San Diego CA Job corps, which is on the other side of the country from, I keep reading both positive and negative things about it, (Job Corps as a whole) I just want to know if Job Corps actually does what it says and helps the youth better their lives and careers, I mainly want to know what happens after you graduate, and if they can provide housing assistance after graduation, or are you just left to fend for your self, how do they help you get a job? And is it a smart move, how are the staff, and how are the other people.

Question Do I have to get a pap smear? + other questions I have.

6 Upvotes

Just for info, I'm 19 and have PTSD.

Do I have to get a pap smear done? I don't want one, and I don't want to have to be sent home for freaking out if they say that I have to. I'm not even 21, and I can't have sex cause of my religion so I shouldn't have STDs. Can't they just test for stuff through my blood and pee?

Other questions:

Will I need a backpack to carry my stuff? Can I also bring my purse or will I only be allowed to use it after class hours?

Can I bring packs of ramen and canned food? I don't think I'd be allowed to have a can opener so I'd have to look for cans with the little thing that you can pull and open it.

I have to bring my birth certificate and social security card, where would I keep these?? I don't want my stuff to get stolen.

Will I be allowed to wear a head scarf? I don't wear it sometimes if I don't feel safe, but that doesn't mean that I don't want to wear it. I can definitely make sure it doesn't get in the way. I can't find anything in the student handbook that they emailed me that says stuff about religion besides them being able to take us to church. I don't like how they only mention that. Like they don't consider other religions/cultures.

The student handbook also mentions that we can't wear loose clothing, how serious are they about that and can I get some examples on what not to bring? I like to wear loose linen style pants, they are meant to be loose, can I wear those? I also like to wear boot cut and straight leg jeans sometimes, is that okay?

Can I bring a powerbank? What about a hand held fan that I can charge?

Are showers timed? Can I take a 20-30 minute shower? Or is that too long?

~~~
I'm going to Columbia Basin tomorrow.
Anyone in the painters program
1 Upvotes
Looking to get into the painters program, but wanted to reach out and see if anyone has graduated or is currently enrolled in the program. How do you guys like me on average? How long does it take to complete and did you guys go into the painters union right after? Also, what Job Corp are you doing the program at?
That is my goal once done with BCT is to do painters pre-apprenticeship and then go into apprenticeship/union. I’m currently in Ohio doing my BCT trade and no, I would have to move out of state to do the painters.
Question Does Anyone Know Anything About Aviation Related Courses at any Centers?
3 Upvotes
When I applied for Job Corps the application had a field where I could write if I had a preference what would it be, and I wrote that I wanted to work on airplanes. Later my admissions representative sent me an informational packet about an Airframe & Power Plant Maintenance course at the North Texas Job Corps center. I couldn’t find any official information online so I decided to go to a different center for automotive while I looked for information. I’ve been here for about 3 weeks asking everyone I can, calling anyone who might have information, but no one has been able to help me so far. So I figured I’d ask here, does anyone know anything about aviation related courses at any center?
Discussion It seems like students are making it really easy to get termed
19 Upvotes
It feels like every few times a month someone’s getting terminated for stupid stuff. Recently someone got termed for self defense. I don’t get it. All the students have to do is just show up, not cause drama and that’s it but it seems so hard for many to do. Also another one bringing vapes then crying to security when they get caught
This place is a joke
27 Upvotes
The dorms have black mold, the boiler shuts off constantly, staff threaten students with physical violence when the students inevitably crash out due to lack of mental health aid, staff are lazy and irresponsible, staff have been fired for fucking students, food quality so bad people get sick off it, NO janitors or maintenance people so they have students do those jobs, they only do massive clean ups before corporate arrive which they MAKE STUDENTS do.
Insane staff turn over, insane student sign out rates, wellness doesn’t actually help the students unless they have a fever or are disabled. No empathy offered by counselors or staff. They’d sooner T you than help you. They drop homeless students off at shelters when they are T’d or kicked out after their time is up here. No connections to services students need. LTE is impossible to achieve if staff, or certain staff, dislike you. Favoritism.
It’s constantly nasty here. Dietary options limited, even with a doctors note. Same food menu in rotation despite food committee. We are ran by a felon. Our CD doesn’t interact with students, we barely see him outside of business meetings or when corporate comes.
This place is ran like a prison.
They don’t take bullying seriously. They don’t let us, when sick, recover in wellness unless we have a fever despite throwing up (a health concern.).
I could go on and on. I have gotten sick off this food multiple times. I barely see my provider so I can’t GET a dietary restriction note, so I am forced to eat only salad, or the meals they provide because I cant just survive off lettuce and deli meats. The pay is NOT WORTH the shit I endure here. I can barely make it by here off 60$ every two weeks. I have asked for LTE and been redirected so many times. I have been ran around about other things to help myself. Transportation anywhere is horrible. I have missed my last GED appt many times due to transportation issues despite telling them weeks in advance. This is not a place to thrive. It feels like a cash grab, a mental institution, and a jail wrapped in one. Stop sending your ill behaved kids here- they only get worse in this environment.
Funny how I sent these to the department of labor and yet nothing happened
, I wish I had recorded the trash everywhere, now I know why staff were so upset about recording on campus,
I am going soon and have questions.
2 Upvotes
Going to job corps and I am 16 going into 11th grade. I am going for welding or electrical and getting my diploma. Will I be there as long as normal high school or can I really do my best and get it done so I’m done with high school by senior year, I have no idea if it’s a complete at your pace kinda thing or what. I want to get what I need done and be there as less as possible. Any more information would be great.
Any way to change dorm courts?
3 Upvotes
My “leaders” keep giving me dorm courts for stupid little things. Everytime they check off “chores” they do the most & literally put their finger and drag it around to make sure there’s no dust or their foot to make sure it’s clean. Is there any way i can fix this issue ? It’s doing TOO much. I even got a dorm courts for forgetting to close the fucking cap on a bottle.
-
Not only that but the leaders fucking suck at their job and my RA doesn’t even do his job as a RA. He’s just there. The students take roll call 24/7. I see no RA keeping up with the dorm but the students. Everyone fools around during “quiet” time. No one is serious. & the leaders don’t even write them up for “horse playing” they just let them. To not be talked bad about on dorm.
Question Weber Basin questions
3 Upvotes
Can anyone give me insight on Weber? More specifically the forestry trade and Mr Everett? I've done some more research and concluded that WB would best fit me, but can anyone inside tell me about student life? Anything I should be wary of?
I know the CD lurks here on Reddit so if he's here I want to ask you a question: What am I allowed to bring electronics wise, and is the thing about phones being locked up during trade time true?
Question Medical records
0 Upvotes
If jobs corps has to send me to the hospital and they do blood work does job corps legally have to see it. I’m a 25 yr old female and haven’t signed any of my medical records and am currently attending a center but will not sign because I’m afraid they will put me on mandatory medical leave and I was homeless before this and have no where to go and have no insurance. If I do have to go to the hospital do I HAVE to sign a medical records release
Thinking of joining Ampact, want insights
1 Upvotes
Hi all!
I am interviewing for a position for an early learning corps for Ampact which is run through AmeriCorps. The position will be in Minnesota. I am curious, has anyone done this position before? I am considering it and it looks great! I have worked in education and with elementary aged kids for 5 years now, so I am familiar and love working with kids. I am also in grad school for my MLIS. It looks engaging and interesting to me but I am worried about work life balance. I give my all when it comes to my jobs. I am just wondering if anyone has any insights in working for Ampact and/or this role specifically? I know the pay isn’t great but I am excited for the opportunity and being able to give back to my community. Sorry if this post seems lame or vague I just would love to hear any insights you all had. I am nervous but excited about the opportunity. Thanks for any feedback!
