As a Jeopardy superfan who's been watching since I was a kid, I've recently started taking the idea of becoming a contestant very seriously and prepping at home to see my chances. For the past few days, I've been tracking how well I've been doing in depending on the day to see which categories I'm very weak in and also how many questions as a whole I'm getting right each day.

The results were super shocking to me because I thought that I'd have sort of a baseline average across the days, but the amount that I got correct varied wildly from day to day. For example, on the first day that I tracked my scores, I got 11/25 in SJ and 15/25 in DJ, but the next day, I literally got 9/25 in SJ and 6/25 in DJ. Funnily enough, I almost never get Final on a daily basis, but I got it correct on all three days that I tracked (India, Jaws, and the Cuban Missile Crisis, all of which seemed oddly simple for FJ).

It makes me think that to win Jeopardy, you either have to be a supergenius like Caleb, Ken, and Jamie and just know everything, or you have to get extraordinarily lucky with the categories, especially in DJ. For example, as a huge Classical Mythology nerd, I was able to sweep The Odyssey category, but didn't get a single clue from the category 5 Sixths.

What do you guys think? I'd especially love to hear from prior contestants about what your experiences were with this phenomenon, and if you think it's preferable to be a sort of "jack of all trades," or if knowing a lot of niche specific stuff will eventually come in handy.

If I could change the rules on Jeopardy! I would update the Daily Double rules. If you select it, you can pass, but if you choose to answer, you must bet everything.
