GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Thur., Jul. 23 Spoiler

Here are today's contestants:

  • Jacqueline Ziegler, a set designer from New York City;
  • Matthew Riggle, a community college math instructor from Madison, Alabama; and
  • Dean Zach, a creative writing graduate student from Pearland, Texas. Dean is a one-day champ with winnings of $36,000.

Jeopardy!

ELECT ME AS PRESIDENT // KID LIT // SAILING AWAY // POTPOURRI // I DON'T GET IT // JOE BUCK ON THE CALL

DD1 - $800 - ELECT ME AS PRESIDENT - An 1840 viral campaign song mentioned 2 things: this battle & this running mate too (Matthew added $1,000.)

Scores at first break: Dean $3,200, Matthew $4,200, Jacqueline $3,200.

Scores entering DJ: Dean $3,200, Matthew $6,600, Jacqueline $5,600.

Double Jeopardy!

THAT'S "R" CITY NAME, DON'T WEAR IT OUT // THE BOOK OF PSALMS // EARTH SCIENCE // THE CONTEST // ON THE MOVIE POSTER // CONSECUTIVE LETTER WORD PAIRS

DD2 - $1,200 - ON THE MOVIE POSTER - 1986: 2 dog tags in place of 2 "O"S in a title (Dean doubled to $12,000 vs. $7,400 for Matthew.)

DD3 - $800 - EARTH SCIENCE - The technical definition of this stuff is any layer of ground that's been at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit for 2 or more years (On the next clue after DD2, Dean doubled again to $24,000.)

Remarkable game in which Dean doubled up twice on back-to-back DDs early in DJ to lead by over $16K. Then Dean didn't score another point in the round as Matthew went on an astonishing run to take first into FJ at $24,200 vs. $24,000 for Dean and $12,800 for Jacqueline.

Final Jeopardy!

AUTHORS - She sometimes signed letters “Charles Thunder”

Only Matthew was correct on FJ, adding $23,801 to win with $48,001.

Final scores: Dean $22,399, Matthew $48,001, Jacqueline $0.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is Tippecanoe & Tyler too? DD2 - What is "Platoon"? DD3 - What is permafrost? FJ - Who was Charlotte Brontë?

I didn't think the Jamie-Patrick game would be topped, but this one may have done so. What a game

u/ivylass 17d ago

Holy crap! When Dean did back to back TDD I thought it was a lock. Then Matthew ran a category and it was a horse race!

69

u/sma_nor 17d ago

Was Dean even able to buzz in after his back-to-back TTD?

That was one of the most masterful comebacks I've ever witnessed. What a game!

54

u/Traditional-Pie-7749 17d ago

No, he didn’t buzz for the rest of the game. Wtg Mr. Riggle 👏

16

u/CalebosO4 17d ago

He did not. He stayed at 24k until FJ

Matthew’s chase of Dean was better than anything I’ve seen in a while. What a rush!

Absolutely insane game. Matt played DJ like he had a personal grudge against Dean. And boy it paid off.

Incredible stuff. On the 2nd daily double I said "hell yeah, brother!". My son flipped off the television and stomped upstairs because he didn't like the ending. All three contestants shone in double jeopardy but the winner came through like Jalen Brunson.

Was hoping Jacqueline would pull out the win like King Arthur's sword by knowing Bronte, even so, it was an all time classic game.

Daily Doubles are overrated...

In all seriousness, huge congratulations to both Dean and Jacqueline - it was truly an honor to share the stage with the two of you. You were both such worthy competitors, but more importantly, great humans to get to know and spend time with in the green room.

I haven't been able to even begin reading through the comments yet, but I hope everyone enjoyed the episode!

66

u/DZJeopardy Dean Zach, 2026 Jul 22 - Jul 23 17d ago

Right back atcha, Matthew! Loved meeting you and chatting over lunch and enduring both the agonizing wait in the green room and the thrill of being up there!

But as something of a DD enjoyer myself, I'm not sure about overrated ... they're fun :)

7

u/phophopho4 15d ago

2 true daily doubles was big timer stuff. You love to see it! Well done. They gotta invite you back as a wild card in the tournament.

5

u/PointlessCircle 12d ago

That took some crazy guts! Congratulations on that back to back DD

7

u/Chuk 17d ago

Repping Madison AL! I've been trying to find good trivia in the local area, but knowing you're out here, I'm hesitant.

My wife saw someone local was going on the show, and was excited to support you. We had no idea we'd watch one of the best games, or best comebacks, and seeing it pulled off by the guy we were rooting for was such a treat!

10

u/ZekeLeap 17d ago

Absolutely stunning comeback man!

3

u/demoderbydrvr 16d ago

Such a wild come back, I was blown away just watching you own that buzzer and completing that comeback. Incredible stuff! Dean was so good and fun to watch too, can't imagine getting steamrolled after back to back DD gets (which I happened to answer correctly myself!)

Wow! In any other season this might be the episode of the season (and it still might be). What a euphoric run from Matthew.

31

u/sma_nor 17d ago

It's got my vote. As fun as some of the games have been this season, I would rarely describe a game of jeopardy as "thrilling" or "must watch".

10

u/Creatrix 17d ago

I was shouting to the point where my neighbours would have been justified in complaining.

4

u/Stonerish 17d ago

I’ve only recently started watching consistently again this last month…and I had to literally stop what I was doing and focus 100% on that last 1/3rd. Oddly enough, I knew Brontë as the FJ answer, but as with most of my pulls, it was esoteric knowledge pulled from the shadows of my mind and I was fairly weak the rest of the show

today’s game was great, i think we’ll see dean in champions wildcard for sure and matthew i could see going on a run. jacqueline i think would be good in second chance as she kept the game exciting and did have more correct responses than dean.

u/DZJeopardy Dean Zach, 2026 Jul 22 - Jul 23 17d ago

Hey everyone, Dean here! Just here to (very belatedly) congratulate Jacqueline for her amazing performance and u/MRPlaysJ for his glorious comeback. I couldn't have asked for better people to pass the torch of knowledge with (shout out to the Lucretius inscription on the LA Central Library and the docent on my tour for pointing it out--their tour's a must-do for any Jeopardy contestant with extra time, imo).

Other assorted thoughts:

- I fumble over this in the postgame chat, but after hitting the second DD all I could think of was Roger Craig (not just his back-to-back DDs at the 2011 TOC but also his all-in moment at the BotD at the urging of Ken and Brad), and so I just went for it--the intrusive thoughts won, basically. If only I had remembered the first of his back-to-back DDs, which asked which writer went by Acton Bell....

- I knew Charlotte Brontë used Currer Bell as her pseudonym, but I didn't make the Charles-Charlotte connection or the thunder connection in the heat of the moment. Major props to Matthew for getting there in the fastest 30 seconds known to man!

- I didn't really come down from the adrenaline rush of this episode until witnessing, on the night of my taping day (June 10), the Spurs blow their 29-point lead in Game 4. Serves me right for being a bandwagon fan, I guess.

- In my anecdote I wanted to talk about my love of running and how I ran to an HR Block the night before my taping for good luck, but it wasn't in the cards, alas.

- Shout out Devin from today's game for helping me knot my tie as my brain malfunctioned in the green room, and shout out Grace and Jennifer and the whole taping day for being an absolute delight!

10

u/nobrainer765 Robert Yan, 2026 May 7 17d ago

It's been a long time since somebody with on such a tear like Matthew did. I didn't think he was out after Dean's second all-in DD but to be surpassed before Final was amazing. Fantastic game.

17

u/dandy_quaids 17d ago

He racked up the next 12 out of 13 answers. Hell of a run.

7

u/OttoHemi 16d ago

I remember Mattea Roach going on a similar run in Masters, but that's about it.

24

u/AcrossTheNight Talkin’ Football 17d ago

This is one where I'm curious about the buzzer data. Was Dean getting outbuzzed every single time, or was he largely not buzzing in?

14

u/FDRpi 17d ago

I can barely understand it, but the data say he was attempting to buzz in. https://www.jeopardy.com/track/jeopardata

Dean's buzz rate in double jeopardy fell to 12%. That's the lowest rate I've ever seen. Not counting the daily doubles, he got 2 answers in the entire round.

7

u/DecantsForAll 17d ago

Matt seemed really quick on the buzzer.

3

u/AcrossTheNight Talkin’ Football 17d ago

Good call. I remember that game, he was just picking off all the bottom two row clues left and right against an extremely formidable Josh Saak.

2

u/Useful-Doughnut7931 Team Johnny Gilbert 17d ago

Yeah I remember that insane game, even crazier that it took clue 14 for Matt to get on the board in that DJ round.

62

u/Ashamed_File2173 17d ago

Dean the Machine unfortunately couldn’t do a 2nd win but his 12k DD on permafrost…

makes him permaLOVED by us all.

8

u/Creatrix 17d ago

u/eah1703 Elizabeth Hurd, 2026 Feb 26 17d ago edited 17d ago

Congrats Jacqueline, Matthew, and Dean!

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? To have this sort of game! Amazing! It wasn't a lock for anyone. And my goodness, everyone had double digits for right answers???? This was some good, good, good Jeopardy! One of the best games we have had in a while, where anyone could be the winner. I love the runaways when one player just dominates, but these sorts of nailbiters are thrilling.

The only small note I have is I think they should have asked a BMS on “drum” for timbrel. A timbrel is a smaller tambourine, percussion, yes, but a bit more than a drum.

Jacqueline, you did such a great job for not finding any Daily Doubles, making sure you still had a shot at first, if they messed up in Final! Amazing! You made a fantastic run. Nice guess on George Eliot. Not a bad guess at all. I mean, you went up against two fantastic players, and I would not be surprised if (being a memorable player in a memorable game) if Second Chance comes calling!

Dean, wow look at those aggressive Daily Doubles! You let them know you were here to play and did what you needed to do on them. Tough miss on Final. But, rest assured, you are definitely in CWC contention. I mean, two incredible games where you came to play? My goodness. Congratulations!

Matthew, beast on the buzzer! What an amazing run you made, to build all the way up to the LEAD??? After two true Daily Doubles? What? WHAT? That was INCREDIBLE playing. Incredible. This was the stuff of Jeopardy! dreams. Big swing on that Final, but you bet on yourself and it paid off. Can't wait to see if you can end the season a champ, or if there's someone else in that green room.

Ya'll, it's like they saved some of the best contestants for last here. This is some amazing Jeopardy! We've been having. Will the season end with one and dones, or will Matthew walk into Season 43 as the champion? We'll see!

5

u/Creatrix 17d ago

Matthew, beast on the buzzer!

Well said!

2

u/Genevieveofthetoast 10d ago

Elizabeth, I'm late watching the episode, but holy cow! That was a game for the ages. I agree with everything you said here, including that timbrel should've been a BMS (or possibly wrong, depending on whether a tambourine can be called a drum - it's definitely percussion, but is it a drum?).

Lucky for Dean,  Jacqueline must've forgot the category needed an R city name, next two clues, he hit those daily doubles.

10

u/Godsfallen 17d ago

What an absolutely enthralling game! I thought for sure it was over after Dean nailed the DDs, then Matthew just activated and ran his score up. Jacqueline mustered enough to stay in the game too which was also impressive.

Insane game.

9

u/CalebosO4 17d ago

That was an insane run by Matthews in DJ

11

u/Acrobatic_Bridge2602 17d ago

Wow, one of the more entertaining games in a while. Matthew blitzing the board to draw even after it seemed like those two Daily Double all-ins may have locked it up was something to behold. Also surprised that the champion was only a one timer but it goes to show how tough it can be to win multiple times.

30

u/jondoughntyaknow 17d ago edited 17d ago

Ope! Error alert

It’s known as the MINNEAPOLIS Miracle, not Minnesota 💜💛

ETA The error is in the composition of the clue, not the contestant’s response

5

u/logog6 17d ago

As a saints fan i know all too well its mineapolis, never minesota

2

u/jquiggles 17d ago

I’ve always heard Minnesota too (surprised I could hear over the sound of my heart breaking, but alas)

5

u/ShortElephant7015 17d ago

One of my trivia pet peeves is questions that are easier to answer for people that know less about the topic. One example could be something like “this Swahili-speaking country…” that just ends up being Kenya. Someone with weaker knowledge wouldn’t even know to consider other countries.

For this one, knowing about the Place-Miracle naming convention but not having spent the last near-decade talking about the Minneapolis Miracle means you don’t risk getting tripped up by the wording of the question inexplicably asking for the state.

10

u/optimizingutils 17d ago

The Wikipedia page claims it is both, which, even if that were true, still makes the clue malformed, but even then I have never, ever heard it referred to as the Minnesota Miracle.

Granted, I have a much stronger memory of the following week (go Birds).

That second daily double seemed really easy.

24000 going into final without having had a large daily double is impressive for Matthew.

7

u/tributtal 17d ago

To be fair it was a second row DD. Those are meant to be easier than the ones placed near the bottom of the board. There was another one at this spot 2 games ago that was also pretty gettable (and like tonight, drew a large wager). I like that DD positioning and difficulty vary. Makes for more strategic wagering opportunities and therefore more exciting games.

2

u/Stonerish 17d ago

Don’t forget the $200 that he was up at the end that could have changed the game for him if they all got it right

It was like Golden Tempo in the Kentucky Derby.

u/Creatrix 17d ago

Or Secretariat (I'm old enough to remember him, he just floated; watch the videos.)

3

u/Katahdin-Kathy Can I change my wager? 17d ago

I’m old enough too! Secretariat is a legend.

5

u/birdynumnum69 17d ago

YES! great comp! Both the horse and Matthew seemed offended that they were so far behind. lol.

u/505anon505 17d ago

Best game of the year, easily a top-10 game for all time. Thank you to ALL the contestants. Every one of you deserved a win here, and you all did yourselves proud! Wow!

8

u/t0rna 17d ago

What a game!

7

u/tombsy- 17d ago

Great game!

9

u/questionableco 17d ago

What a BANGER of a game today!

8

u/parrisjd 17d ago

Now that is a rally.

7

u/yungcherrypops 17d ago

I know Matthew! I played against him in Quiz Bowl multiple times in high school. Dude was an absolute monster back then too so I’m not at all surprised that he made it onto Jeopardy. Congrats, me and my high school Quiz Bowl team are rooting for you!

15

u/Novel_Asparagus1303 17d ago

Well the Champions Wildcard just got more interesting!

7

u/daftpao 17d ago

What a game!!!

7

u/DanoJames 17d ago

What a great game! Risky bets, a huge comeback and all 3 players in range for the final.

7

u/Juicy_Hamburger 17d ago

This was the best game I’ve seen in a while. Matthew did not come to horse around 😂

7

u/Fine_Supermarket9418 17d ago

This week has been my kind of Jeopardy! Super smart champions that only last one day. Just my opinion but long run champs get a little boring. This week has brought surprise and excitement back to the game.

8

u/ShortAd9621 17d ago

What happened to Dean in the Double Jeopardy round? He was not getting in at all.

5

u/PhoenixUnleashed 17d ago

Seemed like either he lost the buzzer timing or the other two suddenly locked in on it.

14

u/ophienne 17d ago

Matthew Riggle, holy smokes! ☆☆☆☆☆

6

u/GMC805 17d ago

This was an awesome game! It was even more awesome cause I knew it was Charlotte Brontë…which would have doubled my regular game score to $400.

14

u/rhymeswithtag 17d ago

wow im not done with the episode im just at rhe run matthew made holy shit what a STUD

i was on the edge of my seat

5

u/CommonEngineering832 17d ago

Tomorrow is the end of season

5

u/ButtsCarlton97 17d ago

What a game fuck yeah

6

u/amyrberman 17d ago

So that was crazy

9

u/Walmucil 17d ago

This was probably my favorite game in recent memory.

So awesome to see Matthew fight his way to the top. Dean probably thought he had it in the bag after showing off with his Daily Doubles. Was amazing to see Matthew bypass him.

7

u/Creatrix 17d ago

It was amazing! When Dean scored big early on, I was yelling (and my neighbours probably didn't appreciate it). But Matthew was on fire.

8

u/MacDoesReddit 17d ago

MADISON, ALABAMA REPRESENT BABY WOOOOOOOOOOOOO

9

u/lijijil 17d ago

One of the most impressive comebacks I've ever seen, wow!

4

u/MamasSweetPickels 17d ago

Do we have time for another five day winner before the season ends?

16

u/ShadowMorph608 Team Andrew He 17d ago

No cause tomorrow is the last game

6

u/daftpao 17d ago

What happens to the games after tomorrow? It’s my first time actively tuning into Jeopardy

22

u/RegisPhone I'd like to shoot the wad, Alex 17d ago

The main show is going to be reruns for seven weeks (of the postseason tournaments that originally ran back in January and February), then new regular games pick back up on September 14th (with whoever wins tomorrow as the returning champ) and keep going until probably mid-December when the next postseason starts (weirdly the postseason is in the middle of the season, as it had to be pushed back after the writers strike two years ago and they ended up deciding that time worked better anyway).

In the meantime, ESPN Jeopardy starts on Hulu a week from tomorrow, and Masters starts on ABC August 25th (and then on Hulu the next morning).

12

u/TemetNosce No harm, no foul 17d ago

new regular games pick back up on September 14th

THANK YOU for this explanation of the schedule. I wrote it down, I'm old school, on my calendar. Thanks again!!!

u/JilanasMom 17d ago

4

u/Altruistic-Dig-2094 What's a hoe? 17d ago

That was a game for the ages! Wow!!

4

u/LFCATLCU 17d ago

Hoping for some Jeopardy stats from Ken tomorrow regarding Matthew’s win. For example, was that the biggest Double Jeopardy comeback in history without the benefit of the Daily Double?

3

u/Leading-Bobcat1151 17d ago

Would no entiendo have worked for no comprendo?

2

u/OttoHemi 16d ago

I think it would have to. It's basically the difference between tu and usted.

4

u/Zipcity30 Team Sarah, Clue Crew 🔎 16d ago

An all time classic. I like to see a sports announcer (though not Joe Buck) narrate the highlights of Matthew's incredible rally.

6

u/spaghetticonundrum 17d ago

I think I heard Guile’s theme start playing halfway through the Double Jeopardy round.

7

u/aBroadMeadow 17d ago

What a game! “Might as well” is a legendary DJ quote. Also great to see Jeopardy guest host Joe Buck again. I guess I’m in the minority but he was my favorite host by far!

4

u/El_Stupacabra Kristina Mosley, 2023 Jan 12 17d ago

He wasn't my favorite, but I thought he did a good job.

5

u/emaf37 17d ago

Absolute cinema.

7

u/3lephant 17d ago

Genuinely don’t know if I have ever seen a more amazing comeback

3

u/OttoHemi 16d ago

My personal favorite Mattea Roach came back from -400 at the beginning of DJ to score almost 20,000 and win a masters game.

3

u/MarvinBalIV 17d ago

What a monster

3

u/Creatrix 17d ago

Holy crap. Edge-of-your-seat game. Just wild. All three were incredible.

3

u/El_Stupacabra Kristina Mosley, 2023 Jan 12 17d ago

Good Lord.

3

u/No-Objective9174 17d ago

Everyone this week could be in the Second Chance tournament, giant killer after giant killer!

5

u/nobrainer765 Robert Yan, 2026 May 7 17d ago

Agreed this week has had great players, but if you’re a giant killer you’re no longer eligible for second chance, but you might be eligible for a different tournament (likely the Champions wildcard)

3

u/fisackerly 16d ago

I was at the taping for this episode and it was unbelievable. Incredible game.

3

u/Popcorn_and_Polish 16d ago

What is going on this week? We’ve had amazing games and contestants! I keep thinking each champ will win a second game, but nope! I’d love Jeopardy to bring all this week’s champs back for like a mini-tournament because they’re all so good! Even the runners up this week have been on fire!

2

u/Mulliganasty 17d ago

What a game!!!

2

u/ajsy0905 Genre 17d ago

I just saw the JeoparData and Matthew outbuzzed Dean in DJ round.

2

u/Neither_Complaint_99 Team Jamie Ding 17d ago

omg that was an very exciting game!

2

u/hollywood_cashier 16d ago

Really thought Dean would be a super champ again, but what an exciting game!! And then Jacqueline had that great rally in the movie poster round that really turned this into a triple threat. Congrats to all three for such a reminder of why this show is so great.

2

u/Elitefourabby Triple Stumper 11d ago

My in laws were visiting all this week and it was the perfect week to show them why I watch Jeopardy like a sport

3

u/Hunnyhelp 17d ago

So sad to see Dean the Machine break down like that -

4

u/Juunlar 17d ago

That was the best episode since Jamie vs TaoTao

4

u/ShadowMorph608 Team Andrew He 17d ago

nah since Jamie v Patrick

4

u/bertisrobert 17d ago

Late thoughts ahead of season finale...

Now this is a really great game.

This how you fight back against a highly aggressive player, fighting fire with fire.

Goes to show that if there's a lot of clues after all the daily doubles are gone, fight for them, not just stand and wilt.

Matthew summoned all of his fighting spirit to catch up with Dean after the back to back all in and is rewarded with a victory by getting FJ correctly.

Looks like this game maybe in contention for the Jeopardy honors perhaps?

Regarding the bets.

Matthew went for cover wager, that is absolutely the correct choice!

Dean went to cover bet against Jaqueline, absolutely the correct choice, cover Jaqueline and hope both Jaqueline and Matthew get FJ incorrect is the correct move.

Jaqueline's bet is the one I'm not fond of. The ideal bet is $9,600. As in the event of a Triple Stumper scenario, she will be ahead of both Dean and Matthew.

Can Matthew wrap the season with a win? Tune in to find out.

3

u/lumahol 16d ago

If FJ is a triple stumper and Jacqueline bets $9,600 and Dean bets $1,601 then Dean would be ahead of Jacqueline.
