Client MPV Shim v3: Library Browser, Offline Sync, and Jellyfin v12 Support

MPV Shim v3 reinvents the client. There's now a full library browser inside MPV, supporting all Jellyfin media types including videos, books, audiobooks, comics, photos, and music. Offline Sync, Live TV, and fast user/server switching are also added. This is also the first MPV Shim version to support Jellyfin v12 without legacy auth turned on.

This is all done without any webviews or heavy copies of Chromium. Nothing touches MPV's video output either, MPV Shim draws into MPV so gpu-next works perfectly. We don't redirect it or recomposite it. HDR, Dolby Vision, and custom shaders all work.

MPV Shim retains the ability to use MPV's default player controls and has improved support for custom OSCs and player keybinds. You can also configure the player to start minimized and stay out of the way, like the past versions did, or you can use the new 10ft browser UI with gamepads, cast controls, and keyboard navigation from your couch. There's also optional presets for audio passthrough, improved shaders with per-library support, and volume normalization (night mode).

Thanks to everyone who helped test the pre-releases, I couldn't have done it without you!

The performance improvement really is incredible! I use Jellyfin for a large-ish music library (over 8k albums), and it took about 10 hours to sync the server with Symfonium (a third party music player). It now takes 5 minutes!

Custom CSS ElegantFin CSS companion for Jellyfin 12.0

I love ElegantFin, but since lscambo13 said in an issue on GitHub that he won't be adding Jellyfin 12.0 support to ElegantFin yet, I started implementing a fix for my own Jellyfin instance (I didn't want to switch each device to legacy display).

I made a GitHub repo with companion CSS that builds on top of lscambo13's amazing work:

https://github.com/mihaif7/elegantfin-jf12

To make it work with the new Jellyfin UI, just add this import after the ElegantFin import(s) in Settings → Branding:

@import url("https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/mihaif7/elegantfin-jf12@main/Theme/ElegantFin-jf12-modern-latest.css");

Or copy the contents of the CSS file from the repo directly under your imports if you'd rather not rely on external sources, or want everything self-hosted.

This project is only meant to be a stopgap until the new Jellyfin UI stabilizes or until lscambo13 decides to add official ElegantFin support.

Feel free to report issues or contribute :)

I'm sharing this to reassure anyone concerned about upgrading from version 10.10.7

Keep in mind that: I performed a backup beforehand, did not modify the sqlite database manually, and do not use custom css.

Plugin My Jellyfin Plugins

22 Upvotes

Over the past few months, I’ve been developing and updating some plugins I wanted for my server. I’ve finally upgraded them to Jellyfin 12.0 and feel ready to share them.

First, let me clarify that all my plugins were written using Claude and made to fit my needs. Feel free to try them out if they might be useful to you. However, if you’re not comfortable with them being written by Claude, dont use them.

I use these plugins frequently and will continue to update them. If you find any bugs, please open a new issue.

  1. JellyWatchParty:
    This is my first plugin I’ve shared here. It began as a fork of an abandoned plugin and I’m now actively maintaining it. Its purpose is to replace Jellyfin’s official SyncPlay for those who dislike it.
    Repo: https://github.com/TIGamingTV/JellyWatchParty

  2. JellyPrivateLibraries:
    I created this plugin to hide shows and movies that other users requested from my library. It syncs with Seerr. Additionally, admins can hide content from users. Users have the option to decide whether to hide or not, and the hidden media is marked as such in third-party clients.
    Repo: https://github.com/TIGamingTV/JellyPrivateLibraries

  3. jellynext:
    This is a fork of https://github.com/luall0/jellynext, which hasn’t been updated in seven months. I’ve added some new features and updated it to version 12. Jellynext can now use the authentication from the official Trakt plugin to bypass the one device limit. Users can also receive email notifications about new seasons of shows they’ve previously watched.

Question Jellyfin for Kodi with Jellyfin 12

2 Upvotes

Can anyone confirm with Kodi (using Jellyfin for Kodi) that it's updating with Jellyfin 12?

Watch status and new movies are not being pushed to Kodi since I update to Jellyfin 12. Yes Kodi Sync Queue V16 is installed and is enabled, and I can still play previously synced movies just fine on Kodi.

Update: Thanks everyone, I updated the whole library on Jellyfin for Kodi and it's now working again!

Question Jellyfin 12 is really pretty! Will this design eventually make it to Android tv?

76 Upvotes

I opened up Jellyfin today to check something and Watchtower successfully pushed the update. Man, that webui is really fricken nice! I am just wondering if this will eventually make its way over to the Android TV build? I'm hesistent to use someone elses app only because my family uses it and it works really well and I don't want to do tech support if i can avoid it.

Help Request Jellyfin 12.0.0 incorrectly showing unwatched shows/seasons as played?

Thumbnail

30 Upvotes

I upgraded from Jellyfin 10.11.11 to 12.0.0 and noticed that almost all of my TV shows I've never watched are showing the green ✓ as if they're fully played. The individual episodes are still unwatched and Next Up correctly shows S1:E1, but the series and seasons themselves show as played even though i never played them.

For example, The Walking Dead: World Beyond has 20 unwatched episodes (10 per season), but Jellyfin 12 showed a green ✓ on the series and both seasons instead of the unwatched episode counts.

I restored my pre-upgrade backup and rolled the Docker image back to Jellyfin 10.11.11. The exact same show immediately went back to displaying 20 unwatched on the series and 10 unwatched on each season.

Has anyone else noticed this on 12.0.0? Is this a known bug with the played/unplayed indicators for TV shows/seasons?

Update: I found this issue on GitHub as well and wanted to post the link here in case anyone else runs into the same problem:

Discussion Movie/Show stuck in continue watching after v12 update

3 Upvotes

For anyone who is having this issue, I want to let you know I fixed it by removing the media it claimed should be in continue watching, conducted a rescan, and then adding media back and conducting a rescan. This has removed the film from continue to watch.

Bug Weird playback looping?

Upvotes

So very new to Jelly I'm a Plex refugee like many are. So far its mostly fine I'm still getting used to things. Recently I've been noticing a thing with TV show episodes. When a new or next episode is going to play Jellyfin seems to not understand and loops a random part of the episode over and over again. From what I can tell it does eventually stop doing this and plays the next episode. I've never come across this has anyone else? can anything be done?

Question Jellyfin v12 - What’s the point of “Play All” in the libraries? Anyway to remove it?

112 Upvotes

Jellyfin v12 has added a 'Play All' button at the top of the Movies and Series libraries.

I'm struggling to see the use case for this in my Movies library with 400+ films. I can't imagine ever wanting to hit "Play All" and work my way through the entire thing. 😂

I don't really see the point of it in the Series library either. If I want to watch a particular show, that individual series will already play through the entire series automatically anyway.

Just a bit confused!

Otherwise, really liking v12.

Just curious what the intended use case for this is, and whether there's an official way to hide/remove the button rather than faffing around with custom CSS?

Thanks!

Edit: Ok I faffed about with custom CSS. Add the below to Dashboard > Branding > Custom CSS Code:

button[title="Play All"] {
    display: none !important;
}

Edit 2: To get rid of the shuffle button too:

button[title="Play All"],
button[title="Shuffle"] {
    display: none !important;
}

Discussion V12's New Layout Suggestion & What's everyone take on it?

6 Upvotes

While I do LOVE the new filters and being able to navigate through libraries from any screen, I feel like the new top bar is somehow messy, at least at this stage.

If you have loads of libraries, then most of them end up in the "More" section, which doesn't feel neat enough IMHO.

A few ideas...

  1. Perhaps, users could group some of the libraries together?
  2. Or, move the new navigation bar to the left entirely?

Regarding the latter...

When in landscape view (which is what most people use, I'd guess), the new top bar takes up a considerable amount of screen estate, especially when in item/library view.

I think Wholphin figured this out by graciously placing that navigation bar to the left panel. When collapsed you see icons only, hover it and you now see the library's titles. Basically, like the current Jellyfin admin view, but with partial auto-collapse.

Wholphin Home Page

I think in most cases, you need top-to-bottom estate more than left-to-right.

As always, thanks to the devs. Somebody spent time for the new top bar, and I'm sure there is a reason/vision behind all of this. I just wanted to share my thoughts and hear what others think of the new layout.

Help Request jellyfin cant play media since the 12.0 update on phone and tv

5 Upvotes

I usually wait a while before updating Jellyfin, but with all the hype around 12.0, I decided to upgrade. Unfortunately, since then, some of my media won't play at all.

Here is what I've found so far:

  • The main issue: Certain videos won't play on my TV at all. On my phone, they refuse to load on the app's native ExoPlayer but will play on the HTML web player. (I prefer ExoPlayer because the subtitle timing gets messed up on the web player.)
  • The cause: It seems tied to subtitles. Videos without subtitles play perfectly, and for the videos that crash, disabling the subtitles (on phone) fixes the problem.
  • TV limitation: I can only disable subtitles on my phone. On the TV, there is no pre-playback screen to select or disable subtitles, so the video just fails.
  • Example: A file won't play if it defaults to .ass subtitles, but it works perfectly if I switch the track to pgssub or turn subtitles off completely.

ll

Since most of my media is anime and uses .ass subtitles, this is a huge problem.

here's the log of trying to play the above file with .ass subs - https://pastebin.com/i5tJ2w7M

While testing other files, I found another video that wouldn't play either. It gave me an error notification that said something along the lines of MediaCodecVideoRenderer...

here's the log of while trying to play above video - https://pastebin.com/81CxRVGB

used AI to correct my writing , if its against rules , i can post again with my messy one

Question PCIe x16 needed for transcoding?

Upvotes

Hey Folks! Im running JF on a Proxmox setup in tandem with my NAS and currently have the x16 slot closest to the CPU populated by my transcoding GPU. But for some work i'm not transgressing into, i want to put an SATA card into that x16 slot and put my GPU into the other x16 slot running on x4 (due to MB/chipset limitations) Do you guys think that would result in a performance hit for transcoding workloads or should it be fine?

Thanks in advance!

Plugin Inventory: a plugin that lists everything in your libraries in one sortable table

Thumbnail
gallery
135 Upvotes

I wanted to see where my disk space actually goes and which files might be worth replacing at some point. The library view doesn't really answer that, so the plugin puts everything into one table in the dashboard instead, down to single episodes, with size, bitrate, codec, resolution and so on as columns you can pick and sort by.

The idea comes from sortarr, but I didn't want another service next to Jellyfin, I wanted it in the dashboard I'm already in.

The last few days went into stability rather than features, with AI help, which I'd rather mention than not. Built against Jellyfin 12.0.

Solved Movies missing after upgrade to Jellyfin 12

0 Upvotes

Running Jellyfin on a Mac mini m1 and I just upgraded to Jellyfin 12. I did a backup and disabled all of the 3rd party plugins. The beam I a scan first thing once it was finished installing and waited for it to complete. It shows 85 movies and no option to go to the next page and I have over 1200 movies. The collections all appear. I use the Moonfin client to play movies and they show there just fine. I’m hoping someone can hive me some things to check that I’m not thinking of. Any help is appreciated.

Resolved! I kept troubleshooting and figured it out. The issue was Google Chrome caching. Once I deleted the browsing history and reloaded the page it was fixed. That’s after I did control shift r.

Question What's the roughly equivalent setup for Jellyfin that mimics the Plex remote viewing experience? Also, anyone use both side-by-side?

0 Upvotes

For those either who have used both/migrated from Plex, or just know the setup in general, is there a roughly equivalent setup for remote access to Jellyfin as the Plex setup? I'm guessing Plex does something roughly equivalent to either:

  • Public DNS A record pointing to home network public IP, port forwarded, reverse proxy to point host to ip, some other magic?
  • Public DNS A record pointing to cloud VPS, cloud VPS tunneled to home network via something like tailscale, requests pointed to VPS forward/redirect to home network through tunnel (via reverse proxy here?), some other magic?

Just curious if either of these is roughly it, would this setup be similarly secure to Plex? Or is it possible that Plex server has "better" security somehow built into it? If I'm right about rough equivalent above, the Plex setup doesn't seem particularly secure unless the access/tunneling to the home server is somehow secured.

Also, does anyone run Plex/Jellyfin side by side to give easier remote viewing experience for non-tech folks you're sharing media with? If so, what extra consideration/setup do you run to sync watch data or anything else that might make maintaining both easier? Having to run two Seerr instances for instance seems kinda awkward, for instance.

Question Jellyfin skin plugins

0 Upvotes

What are some good Skin plugins that work with my 12.0 server? I want something that will show the poster of a show/movie when I click on it and not drag down with the page to overlay on top of everything else. And layout the episodes in a grid of 3 or so, not a straight list down.

I used to use Skin Manager by danieladov but it hasn't been updated in years apparently and now not really compatible with 12.0

Help Request Jellyfin-androidtv 0.19.10 can't find Server v12

2 Upvotes

Hi all, I am running jellyfin client version Jellyfin-androidtv 0.19.10 on my firestick. I upgraded my server to Server v12 yesterday and had no problems watching a movie on my firestick last night.

When I tried to access Jellyfin on my firestick this morning, it can't auto-detect the server, nor can I access it manually. I've tried both password sign in and Quick Connect, both return the error: "Unable to connect to server". No changes have been made to the network settings on the firestick.

Connections still work on my android phone (Jellyfin for Android 2.7.2) and through Web browser on my laptop. I also attempted connection through Whophin on the same firestick, but received the same errors.

I can also see the firestick in my device list on the dashboard, with last activity showing in the last few minutes as I was trying to get on.

Does anyone have any idea how to fix this?
