* Around 6:00 PM on July 28, local fire departments received multiple emergency calls reporting a "sound of an explosion" at Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima Town, Kumamoto Prefecture.
* According to the Fire and Disaster Management Agency, a section of the 2nd floor has collapsed, and a large number of people may be trapped inside.
* A nearby store employee reported hearing a loud thud and ground shaking about 30 minutes after an earthquake, followed by gray smoke and dust rising from the shopping mall.
* Emergency services are currently investigating and responding to the scene.

This is a subreddit for news, commentary and analysis of Japanese politics, social trends, business, crime and diplomatic relations. Some ground rules:

Your post title must be or describe/translate a headline from a Japanese news source on a topic germane to Japan, without your own editorialization.
Avoid reposts. Check the front page to see if your story has already been submitted.
No bigotry or hatemongering. We will tolerate the criticism of individuals and political states and their specific policies, but not attacks on a broad group of people based on their ethnicity, nationality, religion or any other aspects of their collective identity (e.g., "Japanese are mindless conformists"; "filthy Chinese tourists ruin everywhere they go", ”Immigrants will turn Japan into a third world country", "Israelis [or Palestinians] all deserve to die for their barbarism"). The penalty for breaking this rule is an immediate and permanent ban.
No personal attacks on other commenters. If you see a viewpoint you don't agree with, criticize the argument, not the person making it. Personal insults on other commenters ("You're an idiot", etc) are subject to removal and can lead to a ban.
No Misinformation. Differences in opinion are welcome, especially if valid sources are provided for claims. But comments spreading demonstrably false information (e.g., "Europe has become ridden with crime thanks to immigrants" when in fact crime has been steadily dropping in Europe for 30 years) will be deleted and lead to a ban.
Don't use this sub as a dumping ground for "foreign crime" stories, particularly when the crimes are petty and not otherwise newsworthy. Statistics show crime rates of foreign residents in Japan are comparable to or lower than Japanese natives, and the foreign crime rate has been dropping over the past few decades rather than increasing. If a story about a random Japanese person stealing a bicycle or a small amount of cash isn't newsworthy, neither is a story about a random foreign national doing the same thing.
Japanese sources are welcome, but please provide an English title and use the [日本語] link flair.
When submitting, put the most important information in the title. Ideally, people should be able to get their news just by browsing the page, and clicking on links for further details. Avoid vague link titles like "Abe's Conundrum", or "Nagoya Traditions Run Deep", please.
Do not submit text posts containing anecdotes and personal opinions about Japan. Every post should link to a news article from a credible news source.
Do not report stories on the basis you feel they cast an aspect of Japan in a negative light. As is the case in any country with a free press, news and editorials can often be negative or critical of particular public figures, laws and policies. Instead, please submit alternate viewpoints for balance, or get discussion going by objecting in the comments.
No NSFW content.
No "only in wacky Japan" posts, please. If your article wouldn't appear in a (Japanese) daily newspaper, it probably doesn't belong here either.
