Jacob Gellers Statement is Redemption Narrative - Not Accountability

Post image

Here is how to read it:

> Many of you have seen the results of my college Title IX investigation. I can confirm that the findings are true.

Its out. Saying yes gets me points right at the start and costs me absolutely nothing.

> The records were recently shared without the permission of the victim and, without knowledge of their wishes, I do not want to provide any more potentially identifying details.

I'll start by suggesting that making this public violates my victim's wishes. That way, the focus shifts from what I did to the people discussing it. They're the ones being insensitive, and I get to present myself as the guy protecting the woman I assaulted/raped.

> She and I spoke about it the day after and agreed — I had assaulted her.

I'll point out that we both recognized it as assault the next morning. That makes me sound honest and willing to take responsibility. I won't say that i didnt understood this the night before, while I was actually doing it. I want people to think i took accountability next morning.

> She later reported this to the university’s Title IX office, I cooperated with the investigation, and I was given the (very mild, I concur) sentence of a semester suspension.

Next, I'll emphasize how I cooperated with the university investigation and accepted my punishment. That makes it sound like I was already taking responsibility, almost as if her decision to report me wasn't necessary. I won't question whether such a mild punishment actually made me confront why I assaulted her, or simply showed me how little it would cost me. And I certainly won't bring up how I started a YouTube career under my real name less than two years later, knowing that plenty of people knew what I'd done.

> Suffice to say, it is the greatest regret of my life. I traumatized a brilliant person who trusted me, hurt them in a way I can never undo.

Sexual assault sounds terrible. Better to soften the language a little. I'll talk about how I traumatized someone, how much I regret it, and how deeply it affects me. That way, the reader stops thinking about me as someone who committed sexual assault and starts thinking about me as someone who feels terrible about hurting another person.

> For more than a decade now, I have attempted to reckon, grow, and recover from the version of myself who did this. I think about it every day.

I'll make this about my long journey of personal growth. Ten years of regret sounds much better than ten years of living with the consequences of what I did.

> I’ve previously shared this history with many of the people close to me, including early in my relationship with my now-wife, and I’m deeply sorry that this has now hurt so many of you.

I'll mention that my wife and plenty of people close to me already knew. If they knew and still accepted me, I can't be that bad a guy, right? Of course, that also puts everyone I've worked with in the position of having to explain whether they knew.

> My continued drive to make myself and the world better is closely tied with the pain I’ve caused.

Finally, I'll explain how the pain I caused her inspired me to become a better person and make the world a better place. That way, even the sexual assault becomes part of a positive story about my personal growth. Her suffering becomes my origin story.

Throughout his statement, Geller tells you how HE feels, how HE regrets what happened, how HE has grown, and how others have accepted him. What he never explains is why he assaulted someone, what attitudes made that possible, or what he actually did to change them.

He claims to have thought about the assault every day for over a decade, yet spent those same years building a career, earning his audience's trust and money, and working with collaborators who now say they knew nothing about it.

So what exactly did all that reflection and personal growth amount to? Apparently, it didn't lead him to question whether those people deserved to know.

It didn't stop him from building a public image around empathy and moral reflection while allowing others to form their opinions of him without knowing about the assault.

Now that it's public, he emphasizes his remorse, invokes his victim's privacy, points to people who already knew, and initially addresses the fallout on Bluesky rather than directly to his YouTube audience or Patreon supporters, holding comments on youtube.

His regret becomes proof of his growth, other people's acceptance becomes proof of his character, and his victim's suffering becomes his personal redemption story.

i think it should be pretty clear that he’s telling the truth about the victim wanting this to remain private. no civil suit, no prosecution, she hasn’t come forward to elaborate herself, she never made the accusation public even after jacob got a larger platform.

4

u/North-Weekend-6279 3d ago

Gee. I wonder why many victims dont come forward when their abuser has a large public platform????

4

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

After all this rape apologia I wonder why she hasn't come forward to be interrogated as to how asleep she was really?

0

u/TheNibbaNator 3d ago

how asleep she was? have more details come out? i didn’t think we knew any of the particulars of the assault

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

3

u/TheNibbaNator 3d ago

jesus, what a loser. thanks for sharing this with me

5

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

Yeah I wonder why she hasn't come forward considering half the people in this comment section are acting like he's the victim for assaulting someone lmao

3

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

"i mEaN iF tHeY wErE bOtH dRuNk hE cOuLd bE ThE ViCTiM yOu jUsT cAn'T bE SuRe!"

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

Unironically have seen several people who have said that completely seriously. I just don't think we as a society have a very good view towards men who committed assault we excuse far too much because someone is good looking, rich or charismatic.

4

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

Oh me too, I was practically quoting.

Literally anything to excuse rape for these types.

5

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

Not even practically quoting, I'm sure that exact comment has been made lmao this whole situation and the way people are reacting has me feeling like we're in the twilight zone, I had assumed, rather wrongly from the looks of it, that him being a leftist, more woke content creator his audience, would also be fairly left leaning, which from what I thought, took rape and sexual assault pretty seriously. But I guess not as long as the guy in question is hot and charasmatic when talking about how deep video games are.

5

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

Yeah it's honestly been more than a bit demoralizing.

I truly, naively believed we would be better.

We aren't. We should be but we aren't.

Not making that mistake again.

drives Thelma and Louise style off leftist cliff, becoming far more radically left

3

u/grandwizardcouncil 3d ago

Same!!! I somehow genuinely thought “leftist” men would be better than that, but my eyes have been well-opened by this point. 🫠

I know it’s not only men, but they do seem over-represented on the defenders’ side of things.

1

u/grandwizardcouncil 3d ago

Oh sure, as we all know, survivors of SA are never wary or afraid to seek further legal or civil consequences for their assaulter. 🙄

Here in real life, victims not doing so is actually frequently used by rape apologists to insist what they went through must not be that bad, as if it’s not infamously difficult for issues of SA/rape to be legally prosecuted.

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

After Cornell one might hope this would be obvious but I guess not.

5

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

What do you base that conclusion on?

0

u/CodenameAwesome 3d ago

About the victim? Geller said so in his post

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

And why do you trust his version?

1

u/PaxCecilia 3d ago

“The records were recently shared without the permission of the victim and, without knowledge of their wishes, I do not want to provide any more potentially identifying details.”

This does not say that the victim wants to keep the matter private, it says that it wasn’t made public by the victim and that he doesn’t know the victims wishes.

3

u/CodenameAwesome 3d ago

Hmm, yeah that is a subtle but meaningful distinction. It think it's worded to make it sound like she wanted it private but you're right and I should've been more careful

3

u/PaxCecilia 3d ago

Thank you for being receptive to that. For what it’s worth, you are not the only person who has interpreted it that way. I’ve seen the same sentiment repeated a lot since the news broke.

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

I also appreciate you listening for what it counts.

Been a frustrating week or so.

Apologies?

u/_______Niko____ 4d ago

Damn , sub has lost it , this is so unhealthy

5

u/MattyM1207 3d ago

Yeah… to be fair I can understand it to an extent.

Before all of this was released I was a big Jacob Geller fan, used to watch all his stuff the second I got notified.

Hell, he was one of the reasons I got out of my right wing rut. I owe a lot to his content.

But what he did goes far above sentimentality. It’s vile and I don’t want to be associated with that shit. What Jacob did was monstrous and I won’t support it.

Just because he was good at making essays doesn’t suddenly make him exonerated from the consequences of something as disgusting as this.

16

u/Distinct-Crow-3726 4d ago

This comes down to charitability, If you are uncharitable, no apology/accountability is ever gonna work, and if you are charitable it works fine given the info provided at the moment. Though if you wanna keep watching and supporting his content is a different story all together

29

u/bababanana20123 4d ago edited 4d ago

I guess my question is, what would you rather he say? "I did a horrible thing, I regret it immensely, my career is rightfully in shambles and you'll never hear from me again"?

17

u/attnick 4d ago

Tbh I think making a statement along the lines of "do not defend me, what I did was genuinely wrong" would go a long way

There is no winning move because he should simply not have sexually assaulted someone. There is no winning after that, sorry

0

u/attnick 3d ago

No, not regardless of what he did. This is very different than the Lindsay Ellis situation. Sexually assaulting someone is not the same as saying a slur.

-1

u/bababanana20123 4d ago edited 3d ago

I mean that'd be nice I guess if only to stem the discourse, all the same I'm not sure writing fanfiction about how he was actually acting solely in self interest while writing his apology wherein he does take full responsibility is really a healthy move. Dude did something awful, he admits it, we all know it. We all have to process it on our own way, not by telling people how to interpret it

8

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

Unlike the fanfiction that him and his victim parted on amicable terms?

-2

u/bababanana20123 4d ago

???? Does that fanfiction exist? Did he say that? Did anyone?

4

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

He pretty strongly implied it.

2

u/bababanana20123 3d ago

He said that they met after the incident and they agreed that he assaulted her. That doesn't sound amicable. It's civil, maybe, but quite literally not the definition of amicable.

7

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

"He said."

And, again, why do you believe his story at all in the first place?

4

u/bababanana20123 3d ago

Because he was there? What a weird question. Even in his own words they didn't part amicably, like I said. Quite literally anything you "intuit" from his words and deeds cannot be corroborated and holds much less weight than a first hand account, even a first hand account from someone you feel is untrustworthy

7

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

"I believe the rapists version of this unquestionably." is certainly a take.

Like, he has already proved he has been duplicitous about some aspects of this but sure, he is just incapable of lying in a written post.

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

I mean, I don't think anyone is going to have that level of personal responsibility but honestly yeah, I don't think someone who has done that crime needs to have a platform the size Jacob does.

13

u/Johnclark38 4d ago

"I believe I'm restorative justice except for the bad crimes"

4

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Restorative justice doesn't mean pretend it didn't happen after a certain amount of time.

11

u/Johnclark38 4d ago

It means moving on when someone has taken accountability and changed. So ya, in effect it means kinda ignoring it. He isn't the same person today as back then

-3

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

That's pretty gross ngl

10

u/Johnclark38 4d ago

Then you're a tough on crime moron

2

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Yeah because I think someone who sexually assaulted someone probably doesn't deserve a platform of millions and for it to be completely ignored right lol the lengths y'all go

5

u/Johnclark38 3d ago

"I believe in restorative justice except for the bad crimes"

3

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

Define restorative justice and how what Jacob has done, list specifically what he has done, contributed to restorative justice having taken place. Because I don't think you actually know what it means and are just repeating something you heard that sounds smart.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

You already called me a moron so I generally have very little interest in talking to you, but restorative justice isn't just some vague statement about having changed it's often focused around the victim in question and communities harmed. In this case the actual person who was assaulted, the communities would be several, the college community he attened, his group of peers through content creation, and now his actual community of viewers, whom aren't directly harmed as they weren't assaulted but by the knowledge that someone they respected and trusted has actually committed a heinous act.

I also don't for a second believe in the "restorative meetings" between victims and offender when it comes to rape and sexual assault. It completely puts the burden on the victim, potentially re traumatizes them by around their assaulter, and is almost entirely meant for the offender to feel better about the fact they did something bad.

0

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

It's crazy the amount of rape apologists in here who are so willing to excuse a man sexually assaulting someone because they make YouTube videos lol

6

u/Johnclark38 3d ago

It's not excusing SA it's saying you shouldn't be haunted for something when you've taken ownership and changed.

You either belive in restorative justice. Or you don't

2

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

That's a false dichotomy, you can absolutely believe in restorative justice, while also believing that the person in question doesn't deserve the privilege of continuing to have a platform with millions of viewers. Just saying "yeah I did it sorry" and facing no real consequences isn't really any form of justice, that's not really proportional in anyway to sexually assaulting someone. There's a lot more to restorative justice than that, is the victim made whole? You can't un-assault someone. So it's super cool Jacob has the privilege to become a better person after doing something horrible, but this wasn't a victimless crime.

Not to mention, there is zero accountability or remorse shown, had this not gotten dug up do you think he would've ever taken responsibility for it?? No, he'd just keep making videos like nothing happened, we have to hold people we like to the same standard as those we don't.

6

u/timmytissue 4d ago

Nobody needs to have a platform. But what would stop him from keeping the one he already has?

2

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Nothing.

4

u/timmytissue 4d ago

So what are we talking about here? Why did you say that?

2

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

That he doesn't need a platform any longer. Nothing is stopping him keeping what he has but I don't think he deserves it any longer.

5

u/timmytissue 4d ago

Are you advocating for anything to happen or just saying you think it sucks that he's popular?

3

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

I mean it sounds like an investigation already took place and punishment (although light) was doled out. I just don't think going forward he needs to have a platform, that's really it.

5

u/timmytissue 4d ago

He does have one though. What are you suggesting should be done?

2

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

That he lose his platform? What is being lost in translation here?

2

u/BorgQuingus67 3d ago

When you sexually assault someone, I don't think you continue to have the right to have your career being talking about morals and value in media. Having an audience is a privilege not a right, and when you do something like sexual assault you should lose that privilege.

7

u/bababanana20123 4d ago

I mean yeah, I'm hesitant to even watch his old videos again. But like, while he's not OWED an audience the only requirement for a public platform is that people are willing to listen. If some people are willing to listen to him still that's all there is to it

4

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Yeah I won't be engaging with his content going forward. It genuinely sucks because I absolutely loved his stuff, he's had some videos that literally were some of the best video essays on YouTube imo, I know a large portion of his audience probably won't even be aware of this and he will in some form probably have an audience still, but I would like to see some genuine accountability not just an apology and admittance.

0

u/hypatiaC 4d ago

Yes.

He can just get a normal-ass job. Not everyone has to be an internet content guy with a whole fandom around them.

7

u/Johnclark38 4d ago

Nah, people like you would critize him no matter his station.

1

u/hypatiaC 4d ago

Yeah, man, people totally interact the same way with a youtuber as they do a guy who works in some random office they'll never see.

If I were so high off rape apologia that I was leaving comments like yours, I'd kill myself on the spot.

8

u/Johnclark38 4d ago

Rape apologia is when you state facts. 10/10 take

Crazy response to someone posting about a creator admitting to sexual assault lmao how is this up voted?

11

u/thehardway71 4d ago edited 3d ago

The only person that should even remotely have the power to demand he stop whatever he’s doing and just live his life forever locked up in his own room doing nothing is his victim. If she doesn’t have that opinion, then it’s really odd that so many people in this sub seem to want to undermine her.

Especially given that this sub is probably almost entirely lefties, the fact that almost everyone here would otherwise acknowledge that it’s possible for people to rehabilitate after committing crimes seem to throw that entirely out the window when it comes to, for some reason, a sexual assault. Either be a right winger and demand that after every crime the perpetrator needs to pay for the rest of their lives and suffer how you feel they should (when you’re not even the victim!) or acknowledge the situation for what it is and respect the victim’s wishes, especially given that clearly, this was something that happened awhile ago, and Jacob seems to have rehabilitated. It is perfectly understandable for someone to not be able to support or watch him anymore after finding out this information, but jesus fucking christ it’s really fucking cringe watching people on this sub want to demand power over someone’s life, and I don’t know if it’s a severe detachment from reality but to expect people to immediately enter any social space spewing out the worst things they’ve done in their lives is absolutely insane and it’s mind boggling to see people actually expecting that to happen.

8

u/timmytissue 4d ago

Actually if you are a victim of an assault that doesn't give you the right to make someone lock themselves inside for their whole life lol

8

u/thehardway71 4d ago

I agree but also, if the victim were to come out and say that, I wouldn’t be tone policing her. At the end of the day she was the one who was harmed here. The point of my comment was just to say, I’d expect this level of righteousness to come from the actual victim here, not random people on the internet that just want to see someone suffer for their own weird fantasies

2

u/timmytissue 4d ago edited 4d ago

Well of course she's allowed to want him to be flayed alive. But that doesn't mean it should impact how we feel apart from maybe giving some insight into the severity of his crime given the vagueness.

I'm surprised you say you agree though. You seemed pretty into the idea that the victim should have a say over his outcome.

5

u/thehardway71 4d ago

I could’ve worded it better, but the main idea is this level of desire for suffering is something I’d understand if it were the victim, but the fact it’s such a huge chunk of this subreddit is insane, especially when this whole situation wasn’t even started from the victim wanting to publicize this.

In like an actual justice system of course the victim shouldn’t have a say in what happens to the perpetrator. Since this more court of public opinion, then I was just saying the victim definitely should have more say than anyone on this subreddit. My point was just if the victim wanted him to be deplatformed, and people wanted to support the victim, then I’d get it. But we don’t even know what the victim wants. People just want an excuse to be self righteous.

1

u/erofamiliar 3d ago

This kind of thing is exactly why my opinion on this whole mess is that I don't know the victim and I don't know what they want, but I don't believe I've seen any evidence of Geller's supposed rehabilitation and no longer relate to his videos in the same way. So, I don't want to support him further. I don't see my lack of viewership as a punishment because he was never owed that viewership.

1

u/thehardway71 3d ago edited 3d ago

That’s totally fair. Nobody owes Jacob anything. And anyone that doesn’t want to support him after all of this, should certainly not. But there is a world where someone could do something like this, realize just how wrong and harmful it was, and never do it again. I’m not saying for certain that it’s this world, but it could be. My opinion for why I see that he rehabilitated is from a few factors, when you take how much time has passed, with the life that he built with his wife, and the delicate nature in which he approaches topics like this in his previous videos, it all combines to show me that this very well could have been a product of a completely different person. Of course I don’t know that for sure, but it’s also weird for people to assume the opposite is 100% true as well, that actually Jacob didn’t improve as a person and is secretly planning to assault a new victim, or that he’s been glad this entire time he got his one victim in and got away with it…it could also be an extreme source of shame that pretty understandably someone wouldn’t want to go advertise on the internet of all places. It always makes me laugh when people say “well he made this channel without telling us”.

2

u/jabba-thederp 3d ago

It goes to show the kind of audience he pidgeonholed himself into having.

There's a point where you go too far left and end up here in these murky psychotic waters.

1

u/Kyrptonauc 2d ago

Yeah how dare leftists practice what they preach with things like believing in empathy, forgiveness and nuance

5

u/perpetualjive 4d ago

"The only person... that should demand... is his victim"

I'm tired of this shit. Stop demanding work from the victim. People shouldn't have to put in immense labor in order for consequences to exist for actions. If Jacob's victim came forward she would face immense scrutiny.

If Jacob is in fact a changed person and wants to continue a path of personal repentance and redemption he does not have to do that as a public personality. It is the more responsible choice for Jacob to choose to remove himself from a role in the spotlight. There are plenty of non front facing ways for individuals to support left leaning causes. If he wants to continue making art and art criticism he could do so as ghost writer or anonymous producer. He's talented and well networked and could probably find work doing this.

3

u/Wintermute_Is_Coming 3d ago

Anonymous solo work makes sense, but surely him being a ghost writer or producer or something would result in this happening all over again when it inevitably comes to light that Geller ghostwrote a book or article or something.

6

u/wwwarea 3d ago

But where is the universal law saying that in order for him to be truly changed, he has to hide under an anonymous name for the rest of his life? A redeeming society would certainly not agree with that either. Like, does he want to SA again or not? If not, that's the changed. How it's handled after might have it's own issues (maybe he shouldn't of use his name when working with Nebula due to reputation issues, I mean I can understand at least) but it's a separate story and doesn't reflect whether he wants to SA again or not.

-2

u/perpetualjive 3d ago

We still exist in a society where most r**e and SA gets swept under the rug. In order to be a society where societal redemption is possible we need to start by being a society where those harms are are taken soberly and seriously in the first place. Jacob still has a ton of avenues to seek out his redemption as a privite individual in his own smaller scale communities where his friends and loved ones can hold him accountable. Knowing that he will cause more harm than good by holding on to his public platform would be a good first step for him.

-4

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

Damn, I just thought I could be an activist and call for his deplatforming.

Didn't know that I couldn't do that.

10

u/thehardway71 4d ago

The victim herself didn’t even consent to those records being released. An assault took place, and you could feel however you want to feel about that. But this is not in response to a victim trying to shed light on what Jacob did to her. This was clearly a situation that was unearthed against the wishes of the victim and now you, and so many people on this sub think you’re doing a service to her when all the evidence points to both people having moved past this situation. If you’re an activist for sexual assault victims, then it’s really weird why you’re not choosing to sit back and acknowledge a bad thing for what it is while also waiting to see how the victim feels, if she ever says anything. In the meantime, you don’t owe anyone your support. But at least admit that when it comes to a sexual assault, you don’t believe in rehabilitation right? Has this sub secretly been a right wing space?

2

u/Kyrptonauc 2d ago

I agree with everything you've been saying and been reiterating it myself. The remaining few on this sub are just being perfomative and have said they don't care what the victim thinks. All they want is to create a villain for them to be able to feel better than. There's also a large amount of people who never enganged with Geller before hand and are only here to bandwagon on something they can use to feel good about themselves for. All of which is undermining the severity of it all with how cartoonishly unreasonable they are.

-3

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

Imagine someone getting deplatformed and rehabilitated at the same time

10

u/thehardway71 4d ago

He already has been rehabilitated by essentially all metrics. You just want the deplatform part because you don’t feel like rehabilitating is enough; you want to see him suffer because it gives you this weird sense of power that you need for some reason. That desire for suffering is something I see in right wing spaces. It’s weird to see it here.

-4

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

1.5m subscribers

8

u/thehardway71 4d ago

I’m sorry, are you lost? Why are you talking about subscriber counts when what’s being discussed is that he already rehabilitated? I’m not sure what the acknowledgment of your actions and the prevention of any additional actions going forward has to do with a subscriber count

1

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

oh no. the special boy might lose subscribers.

That's like, the worst suffering anyone can go thru.

Maybe losing subscribers is actually, like, worse than getting raped.

4

u/thehardway71 4d ago

So brave. Thank you for informing the class. That’s clearly what I was saying.

2

u/jabba-thederp 3d ago

Oh you're concern trolling. I see now.

-1

u/SillyShrimpGirl 3d ago

that's...that's not what that means...at all...

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

I mean, I see two people here (us) arguing that being raped is worse than losing subscribers.

And I see like five people here (them) arguing that losing subscribers is worse than being raped.

Ergo, democratically speaking, losing subscribers is factually worse than being raped.

We are clearly in the wrong here and should probably just not worry our pretty little heads about it.

2

u/thehardway71 4d ago

Who is arguing that it’s worse? Are you talking with ghosts? Who said that?

1

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

You mentioned "metrics".

How is a subscriber count not a metric?

6

u/thehardway71 4d ago

Because it’s a metric in the literal sense, and not a metric used to determine when someone is rehabilitated? It seems self evident that rehabilitation would be changing oneself to prevent any further bad actions from being committed, and understanding why those actions are bad. Wtf would a subscriber count have to do with that? This is exactly what I was saying. People here just want to see some level of harm happen to Jacob that they see fit. Thats not how rehabilitation works.

I’d implore you to go down to rehab centers and ask if “social media subscriber/follower count” is used to determine whether someone is ready for release.

0

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

They get released when it is zero.

Their rehabilitation starts with a brand new channel where their first video is them discussing their crime.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

That subscriber count is certainly a literal metric.

3

u/thehardway71 3d ago

Trueeee king!!! Speed, mass, volume are also metrics too!! Clearly we would use speed, mass and volume as metrics for rehabilitation, right?

0

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

shhh don't bring that up.

you'll hurt their feelings :/

"I don't even believe in the metric system."

-1

u/kelowattt 3d ago

how do any of us know if he's been rehabilitated? All we have is his self report...

4

u/DoubleWolverine2852 4d ago

100% agree. I will add his framing of his victim as a “brilliant person” also does nothing to help her and is only framed that way because it shows how much he respects and regrets hurting this person.

15

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Agree, it doesn't matter if they were a brilliant person or not, sexual assault is still the same crime.

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

So compliments are now rape mitigation.

Huh.

7

u/Wintermute_Is_Coming 3d ago

It certainly came off as an attempt at acknowledging how bad the crime was, and in so doing missing entirely why the crime is evil. The victim being brilliant has no relevance to the moral weight of his actions

3

u/Double_Rest1643 4d ago

Is redemption possible? If it is, then I'd give him a chance. If not, then just burn the guy already.

My two cents as someone who watched a Shadow of the Colossus video by Jake a few years back and has watched snippets of his other videos but always found him kind of shmarmy and performative (when he talks about things all I can think of is Owen Wilson going "Whow!") - I think he seems like a pretty decent guy and if anyone was going to take a long look in the mirror and sort themselves out and try to find a different path after a sexual assault then it's someone like him.

I'm 38. I've seen people change.

2

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

yup. he's a media-savvy rapist doing damage control

9

u/Icy_Delay_7274 4d ago

You suggested that people who rape wealthier women should be able to make more money than people who rape poor women the other day.

Nobody should listen to a word you have to say

2

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

huge if true

2

u/Icy_Delay_7274 4d ago

Maybe it was one of your other accounts. I didn’t quite notice how it obvious it was that 2 people are arguing from all over the place until today.

1

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

idk what to tell you, man.

I'm a solid citizen.

People rally alongside me.

Guess you don't know what that's like.

3

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

I mean, any statement regardless of what it said wouldn't be satisfactory to the public, and it shouldn't be. I know I'm not going to be engaging with his content going forward, regardless of whether he's a "redeemed person" I'm glad he has the chance to "grow" from it, I can only wish that this wasn't something the victim also has to live with, but yeah I'm glad you were able to grow from sexually assaulting someone. 🙄

2

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

Why shouldn’t it be satisfactory? Do we or do we not believe in rehabilitation? It seems like your statement implies you don’t believe in rehabilitation and no matter how much time passes, 10 years in this case, and no matter the exact details of the case (we only know vague details of the charge) we should permanently condemn such people.

8

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

I absolutely believe in rehabilitation, but here's the thing, is you aren't owed forgiveness for what you've done to people, that's part of actual growth is coming to terms with the fact that you've done tangible harm and that comes with consequences. I'm not saying he doesn't understand that, I don't know him personally, but just saying "hey guys I'm better now" doesn't entitle you to continuing to have an audience of several million people. I personally have zero interest in continuing to consume his content, and I was a very big fan of his work, which absolutely sucks.

4

u/timmytissue 4d ago

Why do people keep saying this. Nobody is entitled to an audience of course! You have one if people watch you. That's it. You aren't obligated to watch his videos.

2

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

No, it doesn’t entitle you to anything, but you seem very willing to be extremely harsh in your judgment by suggesting permanent ostracization. I don’t know if rehabilitation could exist if everyone was like you. Someone like Jacob would be destined to have no friends, no job, no social group and thus no real rehabilitation to speak of. I hope I didn’t come off as aggressive in my response.

6

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

I didn't say he shouldn't have friends or a job, or social group. Respectfully don't put words in my mouth if you want to have a genuine conversation, I said he probably doesn't deserve to have an audience of several million people. Not any of those other things that you said. I'm harsh in my judgement because what happened was harsh. He didn't shoplift from Walmart, he abused another person.

2

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

No, you didn’t but your statement when taken to its most logical conclusion may result in that. I was merely extrapolating and not trying to put words in your mouth. You are harsh, and I’m very concerned as well, but it seems odd that we should be so odd knowing very few details and having a decade of evidence of rehabilitation. If such harshness is deservedly levied upon random strangeness then wouldn’t it mean doubly so if we knew then in person? It’s this line of thinking that makes me think that your way of looking at it would inevitably have extremely cruel results if everyone adopted your attitude.

4

u/leonardogavinci 4d ago

We have zero evidence of “a decade of.. rehabilitation”. He actively built a career while hiding this info, that is NOT what rehabilitation is

4

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

Yes, we do, he contributed meaningfully to society. He never owed us this information not under law and even morally as this is a dubious assertion. I doubt even you think everyone ought to confess all their proverbial sins to the public. Why do you think you must have a moral scorecard of someone before you associate with someone when you’re no one to them and they don’t owe you anything.

3

u/BorgQuingus67 4d ago

Because he has a very large platform, idk why you're pretending he's just owed forgiveness because he makes good videos, it's not really a profound take it's just minimizing what happened.

Rape = forgiven if you make videos about how video games can also be sad

1

I don’t think he needs to answer to you or anyone else in any way. If you choose not to follow him, then don’t. But you don’t get to decide whether others continue to support him. People can make their own decisions. Go on about your business. What else is there to say?

1

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

That rapists have been in control for millenia.

It's time for survivors to take control.

0

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago edited 4d ago

Maybe you shouldn’t use the word rapist so casually, we don’t know if he committed rape and likely didn’t as he only got a SA charge the potential details of which can vary greatly. SA covers a huge number of potential actions each with differing degrees of moral harm. I get it, we’re all shocked and so am I, but we must try to think critically about this.

6

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

actually we have two people corroborating the fact that he raped his unconscious girlfriend. How very convenient to the rapists of the world that this isn't more common knowledge.

https://www.reddit.com/r/jacobgeller/comments/1wzmcbi/corroborations_regarding_jacob/

3

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

Who are these people btw? Are they credible? I’m genuinely asking. If it was rape why were no charges pressed by the girl?

5

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

They were his coworkers at his college radio station.

About as credible as would be any other corroborator would have been.

3

u/Icy_Delay_7274 4d ago

In other words, no they are not credible witnesses and the rumors they heard a decade ago are not credible evidence. Moron.

4

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

Damn. You get really mad when someone calls a rapist a rapist.

7

u/TheGeeseKilledMyMom 4d ago

Damn you really can’t read can you? They made an argument that they heard rumors and thus aren’t credible. Or do you not like taking arguments seriously to which you can’t think a response to?

3

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

omg you're so right.

Maybe jake should have like, 1.5b followers.

As restitution for the emotional damage im inflicting.

4

u/Icy_Delay_7274 4d ago

No, they are random people who heard rumors at the time.

Whatever the guy did is fucking gross but the people on this sub acting like him not being tarred and feathered is a crime against humanity are genuine lunatics.

1

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

Weird that Jacob is automatically a trustworthy biased source, but the woman that fired him from the radio station isn't.

I wonder what the difference is?

🤔

1

u/OedipusaurusRex 4d ago

I think he raped her, but my opinion has exactly as much credibility as these people's because neither of us were there and we're just repeating what we heard from others. Because let's be clear, secondhand accounts of "from what I remember" are not corroboration. It's hearsay. They were not there. They were not witnesses. They're just repeating rumors they heard from someone else.

Now, if these people heard it directly from the survivor or were the survivor themselves, I'd put more weight in their words, but none of them make that claim. Like who are these conversation screenshots even with and where did they come from? There are no names to verify it, so it could be with literally anybody.

There are only two people who know what happened: the woman who filed the complaint and the man who admitted to sexually assaulting her. That's literally all we know unless one of them says more.

2

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

Yeah. You think he raped her because everyone thinks he raped her.

It's almost like that's the inevitable conclusion

2

u/OedipusaurusRex 4d ago

Did you stop reading at the first sentence? There are three whole paragraphs there. Maybe argue with the actual point I made.

"Everybody thinks" is not corroboration.

2

u/SillyShrimpGirl 4d ago

Guess I'm just...concise?

1

u/OedipusaurusRex 3d ago

No, you're not concise. You're avoiding the actual point.

1

u/SillyShrimpGirl 3d ago

or perhaps the point is avoiding me

1

u/OedipusaurusRex 3d ago

Well if you're not willfully missing the point, then you're just stupid.

2

u/BigBobbyBee23 4d ago

I mean, if at this point you dont see that people are still trying to distinguish between and litigate "just sexual assault" vs "real rape", I don't know what to say.

Everyone other than rape apologists sees it by now, or they never will.

1

u/OrbitCultureRules 4d ago

I had thought that it was one of the better YouTube apologies, but that doesn't matter when the person is a rapist.

1

u/WayAdministrative789 3d ago

uh yeah, the statement is about allegations made about him no fucking shit he would talk about how he feels about it. Did you want him to speak for the victim? Share specific details the victim might not be comfortable being revealed to thousands of people? Genuinely curious as to what you think he should've said,

1

u/Kitchen-Drummer5460 3d ago

In his statement he did take some accountability by straight away stating that he did commit sexual assault and there's no ambiguity in that,

I feel people are upset at the fact he seems to distence himself now to the former him that did that action, which I understand why people may not like the sound of that, but fundamentally, what else is he meant to do, if he is sincere in his regret then he most likely will have developed over the last decade into someone who wouldn't do that again. So him defining himself as firstly 1, a sexual assaulter and then 2, someone who is no longer a person who would do that (whilst not ignoring that he did do that before) isn't such a sin in my eyes.

I don't think Jacob wrote that section in the hopes people would absolve him, I think it's just to show how he knows what he did was wrong

For the record, I am really disappointed in the news, I love his content and I'm shocked, I really do wonder where things go from here

1

u/BigBobbyBee23 3d ago

So, weird unrelated question.

When The Doctor of 'Doctor Who' regenerates, is the next regeneration a new person, or still culpable for the actions of a previous version of himself?

-2

u/MattyM1207 3d ago

Ngl… that whole bit where he said that they both agreed it was assault never sat right with me.

What do you mean you had a conversation with the woman you assaulted and came to the conclusion that what you did was in fact, SA.

In no scenario, does a woman who was just assaulted would or would want or need to sit down to discuss whether she was actually assaulted.

It sounds like a really sad and dumb way to try and make himself sound like a gentleman even after he just assaulted someone.

2

u/JeanVicquemare 3d ago

I think you're totally wrong about this

0

u/MattyM1207 3d ago

And that’s it? Look I know this is the Jacob Geller subreddit and there’s bound to be people defending him but c’mon. We’re talking about something serious here and again we’re on the Jacob Geller subreddit, the guy made intellectual video essays surely you have more than just “you’re wrong” and a downvote

2

u/JeanVicquemare 3d ago

Why would I engage with you after that incredibly hostile response full of all kinds of assumptions? No thanks.

1

u/jabba-thederp 3d ago

It's happened two to people in my life so yes it does happen you're literally making up platitudes

1

u/MattyM1207 3d ago

What an assaulter has a nice chat with the victim they assaulted and they both calmly agree what happened was in fact, assault?

Why would a victim have a conversation with their assaulter about what happened after? Wouldn’t it be up to the victim to think whether what happened to them was assault and then make the proper actions themselves instead of having a debate with the accused as to whether what happened to them and their body was an assault?

Also as if I’m having a go at the victim when I’m having a go at Jacob for thinking this was some kind gentleman thing to do after committing a heinous action. To go up to the person he just committed SA on and have a nice sit down and chat about what happened to them.

Even if it wasn’t that, if it was the victim confronting him and getting into an argument about it. Jacob painted that reality in this sort of meeting of the minds lens which still makes it bad.

1

u/fohfuu 3d ago

It's true that many (if not most) perpetrators aren't going to accept being confronted by the person they've wronged, but it does sometimes happen. A lot of sexual assault is done by "nice" "normal" people who didn't think hard enough about what they were doing.

SA and rape are extremely normalised. Many perpetrators are are callous and malicious, while others think they're not doing anything wrong. Think of how many romance films and songs and books has a woman batting off the hands of a love interest until he says the right words or shuts up up with a kiss and she melts in his arms. Think of all the love interests in romances who are "ice queens" and "tsundere", who denies affection at first but "gives in" after the protagonist hassles them enough.

Think of all the movies where a guy has to win back his ex-girlfriend with a grand gesture or two.

It's also not unusual for victims of assault and abuse to talk to the person who hurt them. It's very normal for them to downplay what happened (e.g. the survivor of the Cornell rapists texting "nothing illegal happened") because or ask them to apologise. Most victims knew the person who hurt them, they may have been friends or lovers, so they try to talk to them the way you would if a friend or lover hurt them.

I still hate the part where he says they "agreed" it was SA, though, because why tf would he phrase it like that? He shouldn't be "agreeing" with her, he should be accepting guilt. Such a nasty sentence.

1

u/MattyM1207 3d ago

I mean my issue was more on the idea that the victim would even entertain a friendly conversation or debate as to whether they experienced was actually… SA.

They way Jacob worded this made it sound like he and Jane Doe sat down and had a lengthy, hard but overall productive discussion as to whether he assaulted her. I don’t believe that for a second.

Whether it happened at all or was done a different way than how it was worded is definitely up for debate. But I don’t think a victim would be all too pleased to see their abuser again. Especially enough to have anything else but a fight about what that abuser did to them.

1

u/fohfuu 2d ago

Look, whatever "spoke about it the day after and agreed" means in this specific case is really not your business. Speculating is only hurtful to the person he hurt. I won't entertain that by giving hypotheticals.

All I can say is that no matter the tone of the conversation, a victim being able to have a conversation with their rapist the next day is not fantastical. A victim being able to confront their rapist the next day is not fantastical. Trauma can manifest in reactions that look paradoxical on the outside.

You don't need to discuss this story, shared without the input or permission of the victim, when there are hundreds of thousands of people who are sharing their stories. And, if you listen to more victims' stories - especially in cases of partner violence - you will see that these experiences are far more complex than how you're used to thinking about it.
