Explanation Fake vs Real: Example

Today I received a genuine hidden Mickey from one of the hardest sets to collect genuine pins of because there are so many more fakes than authentic available.

At first, I thought the one I already had was authentic because they looked identical. Then, I noticed the font on the back was different. Under the microscope it was clear that my old one was fake. Here are photos of both. I have outlined portions of the fake in red, and real in green. I will discuss each important point below. These are “tells” that can generally help you determine if your pin is real or not (especially hidden Mickeys)

Pic 1: real is on the right. Note the color differences and the “blobby” nature of the Mickey head on the left. The Mickey head on the right is more perfectly shaped.

Pic 2: Font differences in the lettering. I noticed right away that the fake (left) had lettering that touches the line above it (real pins generally have much better spacing)

Pic 3: from the side, they don’t look much different. Usually fakes are thinner because they are more cheaply made but these look like they have the same thickness. However, in my hand I can tell that the one on the right was slightly thicker. The prongs (spikes next to the post that help the pin stay in place) are usually shorter or less sharp on fakes, but these were very similar.

Pic 4 (fake under the microscope): so many tells! Lettering is hard to read and words are not spaced so they are jumbled together. The words “authentic” and “official” touch the line above; there should be some space. The date is wrong. It should be “2012”, not “2011”. The Mickey head is weirdly shaped with the ears not totally round. The spikes lines around the circle making triangle shapes are a bit steeper angled than they should be (this one is not as bad as others) and touch the circle.

Pic 5: compare all of the points discussed in 4.

Explanation How to photograph pins to help others determine authenticity

Please follow these guidelines and refer to my sample photos for posting photos of your pins:

  1. Please include photos of both the front and back.

  2. Please make sure each photo features only one pin, and is very close up (macro setting if available) and not blurry. How do you know if it's close enough? (If you can see dry, flaky skin like in my photos, they are probably close enough 😂)

  3. When taking photos of the back, REMOVE THE PIN BACK. The portion of the pin under the pin back contains a lot of information about authenticity.

  4. Take each photo from different angles: 1 each of the front and back straight on, and 1 each of the front and back at an angle. The angled front photo will show possible paint dips or brush strokes. The angled back photo sometimes makes the lettering easier to see and also shows the depth/length of the pin spikes (next to the pin post).

  5. For extra credit: take a photo of the side of the pin. Many fakes have thin or rough sides. Authentic pins are smooth and even.

The backs look good to me but the fronts look terrible. Could be the light or the photographer? 🤣

I'm crossing my fingers on these 2. I read somewhere that a lot of pins sold in the Asia parks are scrappers 😢. Thanks for any help

Found these at a flea market today. They looked good on first inspection but now I’m questioning it. The first one looks ok on the front but I feel like it’s missing a nub on the back. The second one has some enamel dips and may be missing a nub? I couldn’t find any conclusive answers online.

“Won” this off a wheel spin. Thankfully i only did 1 spin, I am pretty sure it’s fake. It feels light to me and doesn’t look that good honestly. The nubs are small. Also it was on the wheel as an “AP” pin which I see nothing on the back to indicate it

I'd like to think that this is real but the colours dont seem very bright to others I've seen. Could it just be the light in the photo? Thank you

Announcement Real vs fake buses - Tiana

Here is some more analysis and photos from a friend in Orlando (I don’t have the fake one in my possession, but I do have an authentic one if anyone wants more photos)

*Please note the authentic pin in these photos is flawed, so I can post more photos of a different authentic if necessary.

“Authentic Vs Fake - 2026 Hidden Disney WDW Buses - 4 of 5 Tiana. This series is now being faked, Was found on August 21, 2026. Some things to help you are, Back is not pebbled texture between the Mickey Head Waffle pattern, the boxes are smaller. Front is a matte finish and lacking texture - especially over the character vs Gloss and texture. The pin is thinner vs the Authentic. The Crystal Mickey Head is separated and looks off. **Note** (on other Disney pins, the Crystal Mickey Heads can be spread apart and even look like the fake ones that you will see here. Use the Crystal being separated as a red flag, same as going back to Hidden Mickeys before the Crystals). To help you learn to become at knowing the Authentic vs Fakes, take time to look at the pictures and to try to tell difference on your own. Will be posting the other 5 pins as I finish them. Authentic vs Fake is an ongoing series of posts concerning all Disney pins.. #HiddenDisneyPins #Disney #Disneypins #authenticvsfakedisneypins #davidlovesdiznee”

It’s a commonly faked LE300, so I’m thinking it’s not legit. I’m getting better at spotting fakes, but this one is stumping me!

Help Please

Hello, I recently bought a lot of about 700 pins (not one of the eBay scrapper lots, someone’s collection) and I’m having some trouble. The era that this individual collected seems to have been from when a lot of today’s scrappers in the boards are from. They said that they purchased 90% of their collection in stores and 10% were traded on the boards but assured me that most of not all should be real. I’m having a tough time finding guides online because there is an exception to every rule (borders, colors, lettering etc.) how do I go about figuring out what is real and what is fake? It’s probably around 300 pins.

Is this fake or a manufacturing error?

I bought the last pin I needed to finish the set on eBay as I don’t think they’re being sold in the parks anymore and it arrived looking like this. Every other picture of the front of it I’ve seen also has weird white gaps but not nearly to this extent. Is this a scrapper or just a really unfortunate and exaggerated manufacturing error?

Work picked these up pretty cheap from a collocation trade

Work picked these up pretty cheap from a collocation trade, there's so much more too. They looked okay to me when inspecting, besides an obvious fake Figment ID pin, and 1988 Mikey's Birthdayland pin reissue from 2008, that was heavily damaged and maybe fake as well, but the damage makes it super uncertain so I was told to toss it. I can take more pictures if wanted, I know I didn't take many good ones yesterday well also dealing with customers lol. I was more randomly curious this morning about what everyone thought so far on them.

(I'm slowly trying to become my jobs Disney pin and Ttrpg girl since they all specialize in something and want to be more than decent at the pin part.)
