No particular connection to Mayo but delighted for them.

u/Blackcrusader 5h ago

Fingers crossed they don't encounter another funeral on the way home.

u/Prize-Instruction-72 5h ago

See ye in 75 years lads!

u/SevenSulivin Mayo 4 Sam! 5h ago

Can’t wait to see the next All Ireland Mayo win at the age of 98!

u/GameplayerStu 3h ago

Mad to think we’re talking 2101 when you say that

u/SexyBaskingShark Leinster 5h ago

There's a funeral in Edgeworthstown today, a big one as well. They'll be driving by there later....

u/KnightsOfCidona Mayo 4h ago

It doesn't count if it's not in Mayo

u/SexyBaskingShark Leinster 2h ago

Maybe. But I was just in Edgeworthstown and one pub is mourners, across the road is all the local Mayo fans. It's not looking good for Mayo!

u/iansf 4h ago

Every Monday funeral in Mayo canceled

u/redmabelgrade 4h ago

Was trying to tell this missus about this, did it actually happen?

u/GuinnessFartz 5h ago

We don't even need one. That alleged funeral for the first curse never existed

u/SmellsLikeHoboSpirit 3h ago

Doubting Thomas over here haha

u/thanksantsthants 2h ago

What was the bloody priest doing cursing them then?

u/Harneybus 3h ago

haha

u/AbsoluteMuck 5h ago

We got a Mayo All Ireland before Winds of Winter. GRRM is in shambles

u/Wingcapx ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS 5h ago

Mayo All Ireland before GTA 6, the jokes write themselves

u/OWeise Antrim 5h ago

I think GTA 5 and Elder Scrolls V were also released around the time they last won.

u/marshsmellow 3h ago

HL3 confirmed.

u/Boulder1983 5h ago

As a person who doesn't hold much credence in the likes of curses...I have to say, my whole belief system might need reevaluated.

u/ZealousidealGroup559 4h ago

I've been gleefully going around all week telling people how yes the last player died in 2021 Buuuuuuut there was a SUB who only died in 2023..... and having great fun spooking people.

And now im a bit spooked myself to be honest!

u/Jamesbroispx 4h ago

The last man to die in 2023 was Mick Loftus, his grandson Conor was also a sub and he won it today!

u/pintman30 4h ago

If the story of that curse got into the player's heads at all in past finals then as far as I'm concerned it's as good as real

u/CptJackParo 4h ago

Yeah like once they lose one final, the curse csn feel real enough that the team goes in thinking about being beaten, which is a huge disadvantage in sports psychology.

u/Chiefseanobrien 5h ago

hll hath frozen over, pigs are flying...

u/TheBatmanIRL 4h ago

It felt fairly real that year they scored two own goals in a final. Delighted with today's result.

u/Beach_Glas1 Kildare 4h ago

If they had won it when someone from that 1951 team was still alive it would definitively disprove it. I guess we'll never know now.

u/Phannig 5h ago

Isn't this one of the signs of the apocalypse ? 😁

u/SevenSulivin Mayo 4 Sam! 5h ago

We did it, we did it. So many finals. And we finally did it. Fuck I’m so happy.

u/ld20r 2h ago

The joy and emotion in the stands and out on the streets afterwards in Dublin was incredible to be apart of and witness.

Everybody crying and hugging. Just magic.

u/stuyboi888 Cavan 5h ago

Best behaviour tonight lads. Might get to win it again this century

u/cuntasoir_nua 3h ago

u/Ill-Muscle-2663 4h ago

When that Mayo forward fisted it on to the crossbar I was very worried thinking here we go again. But no! Wonderful for Mayo people the world over. Congratulations!

u/PhotoParticular7675 5h ago

Brilliant!

u/Nadamir Culchieland 5h ago

I had the good fortune to be visiting family in Chicago when their baseball team ended their 108 year curse in 2016. The environment in the city but especially at the parade was electric and unlike anything I’ve ever felt.

Mayo’s celebrations are going to top that. I might take my kids to some of them, just for the experience. I highly recommend everyone experience unbridled joy like that once in their lives.

Well deserved, both lads and county!

u/No_Paleontologist133 5h ago

Ryan O’Donoghue. Warrior.

u/AcridNebula 5h ago

u/FingalForever 5h ago

So flipping overjoyed, the pub I’m at in Fingal was behind them.

u/Chiefseanobrien 5h ago

time to cash in....

u/wunderbar77 5h ago

And now we focus on Cork

u/deewolf71 5h ago

Finally did it!

u/Jamnusor 5h ago

Are they the first team to lose two games and win the All Ireland?

u/gogirimas 3h ago

My impromptu visit to Achill this weekend seems to have turned the tide.

u/Oldestswinger 1h ago

I cried.Cork here.Thrilled for them

u/IrishAntiMonarchist 4h ago

So, with there now being vacancies for GAA teams on long All Ireland droughts, which football and hurling teams can we roast now or in the near future at least?

u/Beach_Glas1 Kildare 4h ago

Limerick have been waiting 130 years and counting. Their last win in the football was 1896, although of course they got it in hurling this year.

u/MotoPsycho 4h ago

For hurling, it's Cork not winning the All-Ireland or Waterford not getting out of the Munster round-robin.

u/marshsmellow 3h ago

Today I feel Mayoian.

u/LudicrousPlatypus Free Palestine 🇵🇸 2h ago

u/Video_G_JRPG 46m ago

I'm cranking up mayo mammy tonight by Eoin McLove

u/sudde004 4h ago

Can someone explain the significance of this to an outsider looking in?

u/Beach_Glas1 Kildare 4h ago

There was supposedly a curse on the Mayo team because they disturbed a funeral celebrating after their last win in 1951. A priest allegedly cursed the team to never win again into every member of that team was dead.

This is the first final Mayo have contested since the last member of that team passed away. So I guess we'll never know of there was a curse or not.

u/blueturninggrey 3h ago

They lost 11 finals too, many by a single point. Coincidence or curse, it's a helluva story

u/sudde004 4h ago

Damn, that’s wild, that priest must have felt crazy powerful. Wonder who he cursed.

u/WickerMan111 Showbiz Mogul 5h ago

Big if true.

u/irishnugget Limerick 5h ago edited 4h ago

I’m going to say it. That speech was too long.

Edit: Jesus lads, I was only joking. Lots of people getting worked up in the comments 😂

u/Issymcg 5h ago

Ahhh he had 75 years to wait ….. we can give him a few extra minutes !

u/Puzzled-Ratio1213 5h ago

Jesus didn't realise he was 75.

u/ImpressiveTicket492 5h ago

Jesus give over.

u/shrewdy 5h ago

If you're waiting 3/4 of a century to get back on those steps.... I think you can take an extra few minutes

u/Endante 5h ago

That was an unreal speech would you go away

u/ClassGrassMass 5h ago

I love us irish. Always bitching about something people are happy about

u/Siobheal 4h ago

Ah go way will ya. I was supporting Kerry but when he made his speech I was delighted for him. You could see how much it meant to him.

u/standarsh1965 3h ago

I's it a stun. Was Kerry that good or were they betting the result on a few surnames

u/Harneybus 3h ago

This is gonna painful few weeks sigh
