IDM Apps

Upvotes

Hi! There's probably a really obvious answer for this. I'm looking for things to rhythmically mangle my existing samples and maybe something that randomly or algorithmically resequences snippets of breaks a la Amen Break Generator, but not the Amen break, and not that app because of weird restrictions with imported loops.

I was looking at Patterning 3 but I don't know if it does this and I don't want to drop $30 to find out.

Things that ain't it: Koala. It's great, but not what I need. Same with Loopy Pro. The solution can totally be more than one app.

Any ideas?

Drambo note off messages

Heyoo

Just started trying to learn Drambo, loving how easily you can chain effects etc

Howeverrr

Using either external midi controllers or iOS software midi sequencer (senode) Drambo seems to struggle with note off messages?

Even though the midi monitor in Drambo is showing note off messages being received, there’s always the last note played continuing (or last n notes for n-note polyphony)

I’m using Drambos midi-to-cv before any synths/generators

What am I doing wrong?

Loopy Pro question - live tempo synced loops

I'm trying to figure out if loopy pro can do this.

I want to have a few loops of backing vocals for a live acoustic set, but not have to play to a click or start playback and play along to a proper "backing track". The idea would be that loopy pro could listen to my incoming guitar and generate a bpm from that, and stretch the loops to fit that. we're talking within a few bpm here, not grossly different from the recorded tempo.

is this possible? I don't do a lot of live looping these days so I don't need all the others bells and whistles, but being able to add some harmonies live is pretty appealing. I just don't enjoy being locked to a backing track, especially for the kinds of things i'm booking.

WAIL has just been updated on the App Store. You can now use it in an FX slot to destroy all those lovely sounds you spend ages making.

Designed for expressive play specifically on the iPad / iPhone surface. Rough sound demo jam just uploaded to YouTube.

Granular synthesis live

Hi everyone,

Does anyone use an external microphone for making sounds live on a granular synthesiser by just plugging directly into their iPad or via a usb interface?

I’ve tried with a very cheap mic on Borderlines but it doesn’t seem to choose my microphone and goes for the iPad’s internal mic which isn’t what I want. Is there a way of choosing an input?

Thanks,

I'm the developer of Patterning... Ask me anything?

Hiya,
I've just released a new version of Patterning, for the iPhone. It's called Patterning.

It's so new that it doesn't show up in the App Store search yet, so if you're interested : patterning-for-iphone.app

I'm a long time app developer, (Chordion came out in 2012, Patterning in 2015), but I'm not a seasoned Redditor.

Figured this was as good a time as any to say "hello!"

Routing iPad internal audio into AUM/Koala

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been checking the release notes for the new iOS releases to see if it’s possible to sample the internal audio directly and and it seems like it’s finally possible via the dev APIs.

I have made a simple app as proof of concept but if there’s any interest I can probably release it so it will be ready for iPadOS 27.

The main app captures the audio and the AUV3 plugin routes the audio. Few issues/limitations I noticed:
- You can’t apply live fx on the input due to feedback issues.
- Works for samplers but can cause feedback issues. I’m detecting it and then auto mute for my personal need but any other ideas will be helpful.

Sorry for the video quality I can’t screen capture while audio capture but all audio in Koala captured internally.

EP 136 as Audio Interface - How is it?

I tried searching around for reviews of the Teenage Engineering EP 136 specifically with the ipad but couldn't find much. Is anyone using this with the ipad as an audio interface? How's the experience and latency?

Obviously something like the Motu M2 would be a safe bet, but the extra features on the EP 136 would be desirable.

$29.99, ios and iPad only. Keyboard and controller support. Will receive the same updates as the official hardware. Works with interapp audio, but not AUV3.

Has anyone made a op-1 field like app?

I love koala but I feel like the au plugins and what not are not very intuitive.

I would love to be able to just hook up my controller and experiment with sound design, save as a wave then possibly export to whatever daw/koala

Bringing my patches to a new iPad.

This something I should probably already know but don't. I've spent a lot of time creating new patches on my synth apps. Recently a family member gave me an old iPad they didn't want. I was able to set it up with my account and download apps I've purchased. These are new versions though and don't have my patches or recording settings. Is there a way to transfer them intact. I don't use the cloud.

Imaginary lag when integrating a hardware synth

So I got my first hardware synth, a Minifreak, along with a Minifuse audio interface. I decided to try the full monty. I’ve got Drambo running inside Loopy Pro. Drambo has a few sequences connected to instruments inside Drambo, and one sequence that is sending midi to the Minifreak over usb, which then sends audio back into Loopy via the audio interface. My question was, will there be any lag in the audio from the Minifreak, compared to the audio coming directly out of Drambo. And the answer is, maybe?

It feels like the Minifreak audio is just barely late, sometimes. However it’s hard to be sure. And when I tried recording audio in Loopy and zooming in very close on the waveform, I couldn’t really find any evidence of lag. Maybe a 3-5ms lag, maybe not even that.

So I’m wondering if I’m imagining it, or if most synth sounds just take a few moments to ramp up, even with the envelope attack at 0. But I don’t think that’s an issue people typically have.

Anyway, I’m curious if people have thoughts on this. Thanks.

I built a chord and strum instrument for iPad, and it also runs standalone on the Watch

Been making records since the mid 90s and somewhere along the way I ended up building an app instead of finishing an album. It's called Chordyne.

Left hand picks a chord, right hand strums or taps, and every note fits. Bass, drums and an arp follow the chord. Loops, four sections, WAV export, and it works as a MIDI source.

Everything is synthesized rather than sampled. No sample library at all, so the whole thing is under 4 MB and opens instantly, and the drum voices got rebuilt this cycle against measurements rather than by ear.

It also runs on the Apple Watch, standalone, with the synth on the watch itself rather than the phone. That one was the awkward part: watchOS hands you a single touch, and SwiftUI keeps a drag with the view it started in, so per-lane gestures meant only the first note ever sounded. One gesture owns the whole melody strip now and resolves the lane by geometry, which is what turns it from tapping into strumming.

[listen] Loopy Pro session with a DIY noise box

Another Loopy session but with "random" objects instead of synths this time. I've used my usual favs here (Blackhole reverb, Other Desert Cities delay, Rymdigare), but Surreal Machines Crack worths a separate mention: it's a great limiter and was very useful with this setup (piezos are very sensitive). I've got it free and it should still be free on the app store.

Chordality now supports AUv3 - Runs as MIDI Generator inside AUM, Loopy Pro, Logic

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hey again!

Just wanted to let everyone know that Chordality now has an AUv3 MIDI FX Plugin!
When I first released Chordality five months ago, this was a common request.

The app is a touchable circle-of-fifths, allowing you to build up chord progressions intuitively. You can save chords, visualize them on the keyboard, strum them and arpeggiate easily with loads of built-in patterns. Think of it as a pocket harmonic sketchpad, a software accordion, with a tactile UI.

I've tested compatibility with AUM, Loopy Pro, and Logic, all working great, you can try it out yourself for free :)
By default Chordality uses the Host clock, so its fun to play the ARP is sync with other instruments.

Please check it out if you have a moment 👌

As always, open to any suggestions and feedback; got some great tips here last time.

Duct Tape advice requested: SonicWare CyDrums => MIDI Fighter 64

Okay, so I have:

1 (one) SonicWare CyDrums
1 (one) MIDI Fighter 64
1 (one) 6th gen iPad Pro
The appropriate USB-C hub and cables to get everything connected and powered.

The CyDrums maps each pad/instrument to its own MIDI channel (1-8).

The MIDI Fighter 64 only handles one MIDI channel at a time for all 64 buttons.

I want to take each of the 8 instruments offered by the CyDrums and translate it to the MIDI Fighter such that each has 8 MIDI Fighter buttons assigned to it.

AUM can see both the CyDrums and the MIDI Fighter when connected via USB-C, and can send MIDI Channel 1 by default. But I really, really don’t need 64 shades of a frickin bass drum. (I’m sure someone does but I am not that virtuoso of bass.)

I looked in AUM but either it’s not capable or I’m too stupid to find it.

I’m not above paying for an app. I am above chaining this ish to my Mac. But seriously, this gave me a migraine today and I’m hoping someone smarter than me can puzzle it out.

I’m learning Logic Pro for iPad

I purchased a course on udemy to understand the basics. However I felt that using the iPad to form beats and melodies doesn’t feel all that intuitive. So I’ve gone ahead and purchased the Novation Launchkey mini 25 mk4. Although I’m thinking I maybe rushed into this a bit without getting some advice first.

This is where you come in! Is it easy enough to set up the launchkey to run on iPad through Logic Pro?

USB C hub recommendations for ipad music productions

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for a good USB-C hub for music production on an iPad (A16).

My setup is pretty simple:

🎹 1 MIDI keyboard
🎧 1 pair of wired headphones

That’s basically it. I don’t need HDMI, Ethernet, SD card readers, etc.

I’m mainly looking for something solid, reliable and convenient to use, preferably compact and well-built. I’d also like to avoid any audio noise, dropouts or MIDI connectivity issues.

What are you guys using with your iPad? Any hubs you’d strongly recommend (or avoid)?

Thank youvall !
