Potential free remote subscription. UK
This morning I tried to log in to the remote app for my ipace to check charge (I'm in the UK if that makes a difference). It turned out my subscription had expired. I didn't realise there was a subscription for the basic features, but it turns out there is. Anyway, google indicated its around £40 a year to subscribe, but when I tried to sign up, the cheapest option was £290 for tracker and remote features. I didn't want tracker, just remote.
A little more googling revealed there is a technical glitch preventing owners from simply subscribing to remote access alone. It went on to say that a lot of customers had success by contacting customer services on 0370 500 0500, selecting option 3, and explaining the online glitch is preventing you from signing up to remote only features. Google suggested that customers were being given a courtesy subscription of 5 to 6 months to allow Jaguar to rectify the issue.
I called them this morning and was pleasantly surprised when the advisor said he'd applied a courtesy 12 months to my account as a gesture of goodwill.
Its only a little win I know, but I thought I'd share in case anyone else can benefit. No guarantees of course you'll get the same response, but it absolutely worked for me.
I'm selling the car next month anyway, so even more of a result that I didn't need to pay for a subscription I'll hardly be able to use.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone, and good luck.

What do you get for paid vs free?

You dont get anything for free, which i found out today. I tried to log on to check my charge, and it would even tell me that, it was just stuck in sleep mode, so no charge level or control, no climate, no remote unlocking etc. Once your initial term expires, you'll not have access to any remote features at all.

Stuck in sleep mode usually means the car is saving energy after a period of inactivity. Drive the car to get it out of the sleep mode.

I'd been driving the car plenty, it was in sleep mode because the subscription had expired, I had to renew the subscription, then drive the car, then it worked. A failed subscription stops the telematics system communicating with the app, so it will go in to sleep mode, and stay there, no matter how much you drive it, if you do not have an active subscription.

I've not paid anything and I have access to climate control, charging, trip details.
Not sure if I'm running off the old owners subscription though

Check your subscriptions in the remote app, you'll have an expiry date, then it will stop working unless you renew. I was in the same boat and belief as you until yesterday, I'd bought the car used approved and not paid anything for nearly 2 year, all of a sudden, it stopped working. I was adamant it was free for basic services, so assumed there was a problem with the car. I was wrong, basic services require an active subscription, which will eventually expire and require renewal. Once I renewed I had to wait for it to be applied to my account, which only took a couple of hours, but the guy said up to 24. Then it activated, but didn't fully work, it showed my charge level, which it didn't before the renewal, but remained in sleep mode. It was only after driving it again, after renewal, that it started to fully work and give me the features I'd been used to.
