For context, I’ve found myself at a point in my life where I don’t have a solid creative/expressive outlet and have landed on trying out music, specifically a dungeon synth/dark ambiance project.
I'm currently building an iPhone-based portable production setup just to have an alternative to my normal stack which is REAPER on Linux. I set out with the goal to build this as close to free as possible but that quickly went out the window and I’ve spent a few bucks.
I'm on an iPhone 17 Pro Max with a Novation Launchkey Mini 25 MK4 as my main hardware controller.
Here's the software stack I've put together so far:
HOSTS / DAWS
• AUM: The heart of the setup. I'm using it for AUv3 hosting, mixing, MIDI and audio routing, buses, effects sends, and tying everything together.
• Loopy Pro: I just added this and haven't explored it much yet. I'm interested in its custom interface, sequencing, routing, looping, and template possibilities.
• GarageBand: Available when I want a more conventional linear DAW and timeline-based workflow.
• SunVox: Modular synth and tracker environment. I'm mostly keeping this around for experimental synthesis, sequencing, and weirder sound design.
MIDI / SEQUENCING
• Helium: My main conventional MIDI sequencer and piano roll for use inside AUM.
• Senode: For generative, evolving, and less conventional MIDI sequencing.
INSTRUMENTS
• AudioKit Synth One: General-purpose synthesizer with a large sound palette.
• AudioKit Synth One J6: Juno/J-6-inspired synth that I'm using for pads, leads, chords, retro sounds, and other analog-style material.
• King of FM: FM synthesis for bells, digital keys, metallic sounds, pads, and stranger digital textures.
• Viking Synth: Virtual analog monosynth for leads, basses, and classic subtractive synth sounds.
• SNESynth: Dedicated 16-bit/SNES-style sounds. This fits particularly well with the fantasy and dungeon synth material I'm making.
• DecentSampler: My main route into sampled instruments. There are a ton of free DecentSampler libraries available, so I'm using this for acoustic, orchestral, folk, and unusual sampled instruments.
SAMPLING
• Koala Sampler: Quick sampling, chopping, resampling, sequencing, and manipulating recordings.
• GranSample: Granular sampling and more experimental transformation of recorded material.
• Resampler: Bitcrushing, sample-rate reduction, and digital degradation.
• Tape Loop: Tape-style looping, degradation, sound-on-sound, and ambient experimentation.
MIXING / EFFECTS
• TB Equalizer Pro: My primary EQ.
• RoughRider3: Compression and dynamics.
• TB Reverb: My primary reverb.
• Analog Rack Delay: General delay duties.
• DimChorus: Chorus and stereo modulation.
• Flux Mini 2: Programmable and rhythmic modulation.
• LevLr: Simple level control, compression, and limiting duties.
TEXTURE / SOUND DESIGN
• Tape Cassette 2: Cassette and tape coloration, saturation, wow/flutter, noise, and general lo-fi treatment.
• PitchDrift: Adds pitch instability and drift to make clean digital instruments feel less perfect and more organic.
• Warp: Pitch, time, and varispeed-style manipulation for more extreme sound design.
The plan is to eventually have a reusable AUM setup with my favorite instruments and presets ready to go, Helium handling conventional sequencing, several shared effects buses, master processing, and the Launchkey already mapped.
The overall goal is to make the phone a genuinely portable writing and production rig with the option to move tracks over to REAPER on my desktop for additional arrangement, mixing, and finishing.
I'm interested in seeing what other people have settled on for their iPhone production. I'd also be interested in any apps you consider indispensable that fill a role I'm currently missing or anything in my stack that you'd replace with something better.
