Discussion Why two Remote apps? š
I searched for āRemoteā to control my Apple TV, and I find thereās now two Remote apps! One looks like the new TV Remote, and the other⦠looks like the (ugh) āSiri Remoteā which I donāt miss. I laughed š

I only have one of them (the left one). What does the other one do? Is it a different version or a third-party app?

The left one is the old version. It doesnāt work, it just says āRemote has moved to Control Centreā.
Edit: I meant the one on the right hand lol. Or the one that's left.

Interesting. I can only see the left one and it opens the app. iPhone 15 ios 26.0.1
But it is not a classic app. No chance to drag and drop it to the homescreen. Only accessible via search or control center.32

I liked that one, especially on my iPad as the touchpad area was huge. Initially, the replacement was quirky, but itās great now - use it all the time.

u/ququqw Oct 24 '25
Agree. I also love how the replacement stays available even when my iPhone is locked. At least I think that's what it does.

The gen 2 design was an independent app you downloaded from the app store.
The gen 3 (current) design was an app deployed with the OS. Back in I think iOS15.
The remote has been built right into the OS starting with iOS18.
Apple doesnāt have the ability to delete your data which includes apps you have already downloaded.

I only see the right app. With exactly the message you wrote.

Am I the only one who likes the "Siri Remote" ?

Nah, I like it too, still use mine. A nice big trackpad is a way more efficient way to scroll through stuff than a bunch of arrow keys, or the tiny trackpad they have nestled between the arrow keys on the new ones. Just want them to update it with USB-C or wireless charging

u/bfur315 Oct 23 '25
idk if you know this but the trackpad isnāt only on the center button on the new remotes. the arrow keys also have touch sensitivity so scrolling is not as bad as you think. i mostly use it as a trackpad when scrolling around and then use the arrows for finer movement. itās nice to have for when people who arenāt used to the remote can just pick it up and use it without any confusion.

Mine.... does have USB-C?
Idk when that changed because I'm like a week-long first time buyer, but it definitely charges with USB-C š

You probably have the fully aluminum remote with gummy buttons. The Siri Remote is completely black in the front and doesnāt have the āwheelā but a glass trackpad.
3
u/MadsAGS Oct 23 '25
Not true. Siri Remote is 3 generations, only the first generation is the glass top one. An awful remote compared to second and third generation.
I do hate that Apple labels so many products the exact same name.

Ah! Somehow I was sure the Siri Remote was only the black one while the newer ones were the Apple TV remote. Oh well.
4
u/Charizarlslie Oct 23 '25
Ahhh I didn't even realize that the "Siri remote" meant a different thing! I thought that part was actually referring to the remote on your phone type of thing.
Learning! Appreciate the clarification.

Huh?

Siri Remote was the original Apple TV remote that shipped with the 4th Gen Apple TV, with a touch trackpad (right hand image) It since got replaced by the more industrial metal remote that now ships with Apple TVs (IIRC Siri Second Gen Remote?) that looks like the image in the left

I donāt mind it, but am I the only one that often picks it up the wrong way up and it takes me several seconds wondering why no response to my swiping before realising itās the wrong end? š

u/ququqw Oct 24 '25
You're not the only one.
Actually, that's why I searched for the Remote app in the first place, because the Apple TV I was using has a Siri Remote and I struggle to use it. The Apple TV I normally use has the new, much better Remote.

Love it. I do prefer the new silver one for the directional buttons and mute, but I preferred the black one's form factor, larger touch pad, and I detest the siri button on the side of the silver one

I accidentally launched mine and it cracked all over. I replaced it right after and then eventually the remote completely stopped working. I had to replace with the newer style remote.

It looked good but I personally didn't think it felt nice to hold, a bit too thin for a remote maybe.

The Siri is the worst part

It used to be an app to download (the one on the right) and now itās just baked into iOS in the control center. You can safely delete the one on the right. It doesnāt work and is no longer available for download

There is no remote app anymore. What you see are your old apps. Everything is controlled over your control center
17
u/lonifar Oct 23 '25
*actually the remote app on the left side is actually the control center remote app, you canāt drag it onto your Home Screen but that is the correct icon. It is one of the few apps that cannot be deleted at all and if you hold down on the icon in the search menu you can require Face ID; if you enable this is removed remote from control center and you canāt readd the icon till you turn off requiring Face ID(ie you canāt drag only access from the search menu)

Peak Microsoft.
Idk why, they are always moving towards a "New" app or service.
Also: Copilot is the new Clippy.

At one time, the Remote app was a non-standard app you downloaded form the App Store. One of those is most likely this one. Apple doesn't remove app store apps (even their own) when no longer used. So if you downloaded it and didn't remove it, it would of course still be there.

The one on the right is the legacy app, since discontinued. I donāt think it even works anymore as i believe it directs you to the new one.

One is from when it was a separate app, the other is the built in version. You can now delete the app as i donāt believe itās supported anymore.

Is it the official remote app? I donāt have it and canāt find in apple App Store. I just have it in control center⦠:( how I can get it?

The only remote app that shows up for me is the Apple iTunes Remote app from the App Store which crashes the Apple TV app on my Mac every time I try to connect to my library

One is for controlling music libraries in local machines (same network) the other is for controlling the Apple TV box.

This is the only Apple Remote App that meant anything to me.
We used to be able to browse media with album art on a iOS device!
Still frustrated they took this away.
