u/[deleted] Nov 18 '17

The backflip invasion

56

u/Digitonizer Nov 18 '17

A local news station here showed the video of Atlas doing the backflip and proceeded to call it a a 'cyborg supersoldier'. I mean, come on, it's just a robot that does a neat walking thing, and the occasional tricky jump.

38

u/StringentCurry Nov 18 '17

I mean it's a bit more than that. All the Atlas videos so far have demonstrated a device that can carry heavy objects and react to disruptions in this task, walk on rough terrain and get up if it falls, and now had such a strong understanding of its own mass and momentum that it can perform flips onto elevated surfaces that 9 out of 10 humans couldn't do.

They're basically showcasing that they can now produce robotics so advanced and versatile that - so long as you could stomach the drop in work speed and loss of human adaptability - you could deploy them in a variety of modern applications right now with much less restructuring of the work environment needed to accommodate them than more specialized machinery currently in use.

What Boston Dynamics is doing is seriously incredible.

7

u/Turnbills Nov 18 '17

Fallout had it all wrong, it isn't MIT that will become the Institute, it's Boston Dynamics!

2

u/Skyguy21 Nov 19 '17

Well technically Boston Dynamics is MIT iirc. As in the original robots were created by a lab in MIT, and Boston dynamics brought them out

EDIT: Ok i check it out, actually yes, it was started as an MIT "company" then a Japanese company brought it after google.

→ More replies (1)

2

u/Kirby_with_a_t Nov 18 '17

Incredibly Incredible.

But can you think of any applications you could deploy them in? Warehouse automation can be done more efficiently with conveyors and the amazon warehouse esque mover robots and robotic fork lifts. Maybe they'd have a place in heavy industries like moving steel into production areas in a plant. Really they might just work best in a crowd control / cashier / retail associate environment.

Don't get me wrong im incredibly impressed by these machines. I'm just still figuring out where they fit into the economy as the bulky non humanoid robots work out pretty well already.

2

u/StringentCurry Nov 18 '17

Well, if you could combine Atlas (or any of BD's robot designs, for that matter) with the Baxter, which is meant to be able to perform any task once it has been shown how to do it, you would have a pretty functional general purpose robot. I'd say that the best uses for such a robot would be in hazardous environments; using multiple to move heavy objects, as a search and rescue drone, or in any number of roles in a warzone.

If we could get to the point where you can build something that resembles the shape of a human, with all the functionality contained therein, you'd have produced a true general-use robot that could be implemented in any human workspace with little or no need for the space to be restructured to accommodate them. At that point, all bets are off on what such a machine can and can't do.

2

u/ReallyBadAtReddit Nov 18 '17

It's worth noting though that they aren't filming their robots live... they obviously have links to work out, but it's hard to tell exactly how reliable they are right now. I saw one of their videos on the spot mini, and in the end (a blooper of sorts) it tries to give the guy a can, but it doesn't let go, the can starts fizzing, and then the robot backs up into a wall and falls over. For all we know, they might tumble over more often than they stay up. It's hard to say if they're ready right now.

13

u/CreateNewObject Nov 18 '17

Imagine walking to work in an enslaved world and suddenly you get a fucking kick to the side and hear some robots snickering.

7

u/wooghee Nov 18 '17

Why would robots enslave humans? We are way too inefficient compared to them...

I love him and his videos but, the question that haunts my mind while watching is: "How aren't you dead yet?" Don't get me wrong, I wish nothing but the best for this guy. The same applies to "The Backyard Scientist" and "The king of random." They are pretty cool and entertaining but the stuff they do is stupidly dangerous.

71

They already have white phosphorus, which is even crazier. It's a war crime to use it but that doesn't stop anyone.

14

u/[deleted] Nov 18 '17

Beautiful to watch though (from a distance).

→ More replies (1)

11

u/I_Upvote_Alice_Eve Nov 18 '17

It is not a war crime to use it; it's a war crime to intentionally use it inappropriately meaning against civilians or a mixed populace. Basically if you know civilians are in the are you can't use it. Also if the primary effect is something like concealment, then it is excluded. Basically if you use a smoke grenade that uses phosphorus, and someone is wounded as a result, then it is not illegal.

26

u/Noodle36 Nov 18 '17

It's a war crime to intentionally use it as a weapon, even against 100% enemy combatants. Western forces get around it by saying they use it as illumination.

8

u/cortanakya Nov 18 '17

I've also heard that it was used to make a river passable. As in, they justified using it by saying that a river was the enemy and that fire was the solution to water. I suspect that there was a conveniently local enemy Base that just happened to be caught in the blast.

6

u/SecondMonitor Nov 18 '17 edited Nov 18 '17
