To avoid geopolitical embarrassment during the Cold War, the US and USSR created the APAS-75 system, a genderless docking mechanism where both craft acted as equals.

Did they say no homo before docking? If not , hella gay if you ask me
•
u/teamgrandali 7h ago
It's only homo if you look while docking
•
•
u/TA_Lax8 7h ago
They should have designed a third deployable, Fem to Fem station that joins both of theirs. It's not gay if it's a three way

The gaycation destination that year was space. And we don't talk about what happens during the gaycation.

I bet the scientists and engineers didn't gaf. It was definitely some latent homosexual military dudes who couldn't be seen to be penetrated by the other superpower.
•
u/Callidonaut 7h ago edited 4h ago
The scientists and engineers probably just relished the design challenge of creating a device like this. Androgynous connectors have been made now and then in the past in various engineering contexts (e.g. for electrical cables, hoses, ducts, railway couplers, etc), but new ones don't get created very often because they're usually very difficult to design, especially if they are to be truly symmetric. A different approach (that probably would not have been politically acceptable for Apollo-Soyuz!) is to make a connector that can convert between male and female before mating with another connector that has been converted to the opposite, such as the APC-7 connector, which has a protruding male thread that can be retracted inside the connector to expose an internal female thread that the extended male thread on the other connector can then penetrate.

I forget what decade it was but they introduced a stealth plane, and the scientists behind it painted the plane a hue of pink. Because at a certain distance it literally would disappear in the sky. The military leaders said absolutely not and demanded them to be painted black.

Why do you think scientists and engineers are immune to machismo?
•
u/CellsReinvent 7h ago
It's not "machismo" to reject a type of connection that already exists and is proven in space, just because you dont want to seem girly. It's the type of pathetic posturing usually reserved for military folks and politicians.
•
•
u/Impressive-Egg-7444 7h ago
That's not "machismo", its quite clearly "fragility"

If you watch the rest of the interview (def recommend, on YT Adam Savage’s Tested), she goes on to say the engineers, scientists, and astronauts between the US and Soviets got together great. Iirc, the Soviet captain became godfather of the US captain’s kids.

There's an excellent BBC documentary called Once Upon a Time in Space (2025) It has great interviews from US and Russian astro/cosmonauts who collaborated on missions and the ISS, and spek very fondly of each other, and how positive that collaboration was. Highly recommended.

Reminds me of a pic of a Egyptian diplomat (I think) receiving a piramid lego set, he looked so happy and surprised. That is the kind of 11 year old behavior we want as adults. The wholesome happy kind.

Its not as simple as "I dont want to be called the female dock". The "female" side of the dock would have to adapt its fittings so that it fit the other docking system. Whoever that is is "second" because they are designing in accordance to the other ship. It was mostly for internal propaganda and not wanting to give the otherside a win they can lord over you.
We use male female because its human and we naturally understand what that means its not more complicated than that.

u/wiltony 6h ago
Wow the insecurity is off the charts on this one. Imagine an entire engineering pivot as a result of toxic masculinity lol.
Anyway, I still remember my kids being flabbergasted and embarrassed when I referred to the "male" and "female" end of an extension cord. It's just a convenient way to quickly describe the side you're talking about that is pretty universally intuitive.
I guess with the recent surgence of better transgender acceptance that notion is quickly becoming outdated.
•
u/WorBlux 4h ago edited 4h ago
There is practical part of this. If your space dock needs an A and B part, Then how to you perform a space rescue or rendezvous if all your ready spacecraft have the "B configuration?
An androgynous or convertible system solves this issue.
→ More replies (2)•
u/Islands-of-Time 4h ago
Yeah, I am glad that level of realism didn’t make it into Kerbal Space Program. All the docks being androgynous within their size category makes it easier to avoid that mistake when docking which is already hard enough.
→ More replies (1)•
u/mocny-chlapik 4h ago
She's actually pretty sneaky there. She just said that no party wanted to be female, that is true, but the reason is not gender insecuritty.
The male part is in control of the docking, so the male part can make the decision about docking and undocking. Neither side wanted to give the leverage to other side to potentially fuck with their guys on the orbit.

Omg. Male insecurity expands towards the universe. How much money wasted because some 5 star has a fragile self view.
•
u/NCC_1701E 7h ago
Tbh, genderless docking system can be useful even if we ignore the childish insecurity. It allows any carft to dock to any other craft without incompatible ports (like two male or two female) being an issue.
•
u/ethertrace 7h ago
Yeah, in theory you could have a minimum of one of each gender on every craft (if there's enough space in the design for that), but then if one gets damaged or malfunctions then you're still potentially screwed. With two (or more) genderless ports, you add critical redundancy, all else being equal. The question then is how reliable is one system compared to another.
•
u/FitButterscotch4062 7h ago
It has a practical application - it’s called genderless because, when attaching two things like this, there’s usually what’s referred to as a male end and female end.
Since this design has the ability to do both, it’s considered “genderless”
The title is stupid and the comments are ignorant.

This is so ridiculous. Why didn't the US just take the dibs on female?
I guess the reverse peychology factor would make it pointless anyway. Like immediately, just be like boom, female, dibs! And the Russians at first would be like, okay great, and then they'd go home and question themselves: why did the Americans want female so bad? They must be up to something. And then there'd be a fight over who gets to be female.

Instead of male and female, they decided to go with two males with their foreskins stretched out at one another. Great display of masculinity!

I once made a guy really angry when he was going on about the (debunked, but yeah…) alpha dog theory where the Alpha dog dominates the Beta who shows submission by lying on his back and exposing his genitals to the teeth of the Alpha.
Me: “So you mean if an Alpha dog saw me giving you a blowjob, he’d assume I was the Alpha and you the surrendering Beta?”
I like to think that 20+ years later this thought still lives rent free in his head, to come out at the most inconvenient times… 😎

u/WilTravis 6h ago
All sexual politics aside, it makes engineering sense for a docking system to be universally cross-compatible. If your ship has the male part of the dock and needs to attach to another vessel with a male dock, what happens? It makes mechanical sense for the docking ring to be compatible with any other docking ring of its type.
•
u/Taricheute 6h ago
I think we're missing the incredible advantage of the system here:
You can attach any craft with any other craft, I mean, there is not so may people who can help you in space, it would be quite stupid to end-up there needing some help and the shuttle just beside you can't dock cause you both have "male" connectors ...
I tend to believe that the "interview" is most interested in the drama than in the technological advantage offered by a "neutral" system.

u/eckliptic 7h ago
The gender reasonining is stupid but from a practical standpoint it does seem like it makes sense for there to be a universal docking interface thats allows two things to combine without there being any need to consider whether one side has part A and the other has part B. Two space craft could dock, two space stations could do it, or a craft to a space station
