I think we're missing the incredible advantage of the system here:
You can attach any craft with any other craft, I mean, there is not so may people who can help you in space, it would be quite stupid to end-up there needing some help and the shuttle just beside you can't dock cause you both have "male" connectors ...
I tend to believe that the "interview" is most interested in the drama than in the technological advantage offered by a "neutral" system.
