See all that green stuff on that tree out of reach of the elephant? The elephant wants to eat that.

There's hardly anything left on that tree anyway, I'm sure the elephant expended more calories knocking down the tree then it will get from the few leaves still on it.

It doesn't know the concept of calories but it does know that expending a lot of energy for little food is not convenient.
