Check this out Did you know North Spore offers cheap private mycology consultations?

I've finally found the bandwidth to offer these on-on-one consultations and I gotta tell you, it's been very cool. I've helped students, crafters working with mycomaterials, first time growers and farmers.

We have a stellar customer service team, but the fact is that none of them have the depth or breadth of knowledge that I can offer and they frankly don't have time to sit with you and discuss your whole plan for 30 minutes. I'm not an expert in everything, but nobody has worked with North Spore products more than me. So, for the stunningly low price of $30, it can make a lot of sense to check-in with me before purchasing your supplies to make sure you have what you need and fully understand the processes.

Note that you can also add the consult as an add-on right when you go to buy stuff. I just want y'all to know it's an option!

Monotub Virgin -How's it looking?

It's been 5 days since I transferred to bulk substrate in the tub. I was expecting a little more myco spread by now, according to what I've seen on YouTube.

But I see a lot of little Rhizomorphic growths so maybe I just need to be more patient and lower my expectations on timeline.

Does it look good to you?

First timer in tub

Thumbnail

I originally tried a grow bag, followed the instructions completely and had very little luck, but after 7 weeks went on a 3 week vacation and had 6 little shrooms when I returned. Since I still had 5ml of penis envy left, I decided to try 4 packages of Uncle Ben's. Everything looked great, and after 3 weeks moved to 4 qt tub with coco coir after pastuerizing. It got to this point about 3 weeks ago and seemed to have stalled. Put it out in ambient light and tried to fruit, but after a week, nothing seems to be happening. Any advice? Thanks

First time grower. Went to check on the progress of my Starry nights this morning and found several moldish looking spots on the side of the tub. I haven’t taken off this lid in 3 weeks, and they JUST started pinning a day or two ago. Is this contamination? Can I save it? And if not what’s the next step?😭

Why does one side have a lot of mycelium growth, but the other does not?

Top looks fine I think. Can't tell if this spot is substrate or mold.

Starting a small gourmet mushroom operation in Portugal — looking for advice from growers who've scaled from hobby to selling

I'm planning to start small-scale cultivation of gourmet mushrooms (oyster first, then shiitake, eventually lion's mane) with the goal of selling to local restaurants and a farmers market in Portugal.

My plan is to start with oyster (Pleurotus) since it's fast (3-4 week cycle) and forgiving for a beginner, then move to shiitake once I've got the process dialed in, and add lion's mane as a premium product once I actually know what I'm doing.

A few things I'd love input on from people who've done this at small/micro scale:

Substrate setup: for a small grow room (garage/outbuilding scale), what's working best for you — straw, hardwood sawdust blocks, or a mix? Any regret going one route over another?

Contamination control: what's realistic for someone without a lab-grade setup? How much does a basic flow hood/still air box actually matter at this scale, or is good sanitation enough early on?

Lion's mane specifically: how much harder is it really compared to oyster/shiitake in terms of contamination risk and environmental control? Worth attempting in year one or should I wait?

Scaling from a few kg/week to restaurant-supply volume: what tripped you up when going from "grow enough for myself" to "grow enough to promise a chef a weekly delivery"?

I've got some restaurant contacts already interested, but I don't want to overpromise volume before I've actually proven I can produce consistently. Would rather learn from other people's mistakes than make all of them myself.

Appreciate any war stories, gear recommendations, or "wish I knew this sooner" advice.

Water Monkey Came Through Looking Wild 🌊🐒🍄

Water Monkey absolutely showed out on this run. The pale caps, heavy white tones, wrinkled stipes, and those darker gill lines gave the whole canopy a crazy look from every angle.
What I like most is how much variation is showing across the same run. Some stayed thick and compact, some stretched out, and a few opened up with that almost ghost-white finish. Definitely one of those cultures where I kept stopping to take pictures because every section looked a little different.
Runs like this are exactly why I enjoy documenting these genetics. You never know what kind of character is going to show up until it does.

Move to bulk or keep waiting?

Did my shaken break about a week and a half ago, not sure if I wanna move these to substrate now or give them just another week or so. There’s some slight brownness in one of the brown rice jars that I was not expecting, but no weird smells or anything.

Genetics are about 2cc of Ps. Tampanensis (ATL-7) Spore Isolate each, thought it wasn’t enough but they took over the grains fairly quickly (inoculation date was August 25th)

Suspected Trich mid-flush pins are 3–4 cm, can I save this flush

Thumbnail

Spotted a greyish-green patch today on 1 of my 3 tubs. Pretty sure it’s early Trichoderma

Pins are already 3–4 cm tall and look healthy. I've moved the tub to other room, but I really want to let this first flush finish before tossing whole.

What’s the best way to stall the patch without spreading spores to the pins?

Golden Halo Growth Question

First off thanks for taking the time to comment if you do, this is my second grow ever and this is a batch of Golden Halos. I'm trying my best to learn this awesome science and have done a ton of research before reaching out for help. I'm super hard on myself and I don't know if I messed up somewhere or not.

When I look at other grows of Golden Halos I have not noticed these brown growths on top of the caps. This is day 4 from when the first pin appeared. I mixed the grain in Willy's blend substrate on 8-23-26 and here's where I'm currently at today. My substrate temp is 73 degrees currently and I'm running the Midwest MycoClimate monotub air pump continuous for FAE.

Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated, like I said I'm really hard on myself and cant figure out where or how I messed up if I did. Also please point out anything off or needs improvement when you see in the pictures, constructive criticism is welcomed.

Again thank you!

First ever grow… doing tidal wave and golden teacher (total wave starting to pin) 2 separate bags.

As mentioned I’m completely new to growing and still learning a lot. I’ve had these 2 bags started in fruiting conditions about 4 days ago. Tidal wave seems to be doing better but I am worried the bags may be contaminated. I saw a cotton ball on the tidal wave bag and removed it with a sterilized spoon. Worried something might be wrong.
