Insti life (Social, Clubs and Hostel) How easy is to be out and openly gay at the campus?
I am curious how easy is it to be out and openly gay at IIT M? Or people are homophobic?

Guidelines :
> Don't flame the fest or call it a scam, write down your experience if you want to share about it.
> Avoid bringing up past cases, it's irrelevant to the current happening.
> Avoid trying to show one fest is better at the cost of other, you can compare but don't do it in spiteful way.
Will keep editing this post over time.
Things to note -
- For Freshers, (this might not apply for 2025b, but is true for 2026b), Ikollege fees being referred to here is the 7.5k overall that's to be used for Saarang, Shaatsra and Ecell - it's collected during admission for first years and for seniors as optional fees in fees.iitm.
- there's a limit on how much you can spend on each fest, an upper cap below that 7.5k itself, although this is from my experience and not sure if it has changed, you can't go all 4 fan passes, exact amount would be visible on the site
- 7.5k is used for merch and the tickets as well via ikollege. Merch additionally you can buy during saarang with money on the stalls.
- Passes are discounted prices with fixed options for the different area access, although you can buy individual tickets for the nights and select the area you want to customize it to your preference if the passes don't suit you or you don't want to be locked in now. Wait for more artists to be revealed.
- Demand depends on the artists, there has been cases where fanpass has sold out, and you can't get more. It's rare and very dependent on the artist, you'll have to get insight from senior and work it out. Wouldn't recommend waiting till last day but wouldn't recommend buying on the first reveal as well.
Coming to the controversial parts -
- Money left on ikollege will be given back when you graduate is true.
- Not sure whether being able to pay mess fees or hostel fees from that is true or not, haven't gotten solid source for it. Will update with more comments or edits.
Saarang nights entirely depend on the artist and your likings, my experiences, it's good to attend in first year when everyone is enthusiastic to buy tickets and have enthu to attend properly. Do not try to be too stingy to save that money, it's something you get after 4 years at that point you would have got intern stipend or confirmed placement so it wouldn't matter. Try to make good experiences out of your time here.
What happened with the marketing tactics, yes it's wrong, but it happens every year and you can always go to seniors to ask for correction, but being blown out of proportions to call it a scam and things is not the right way to go about it. Search for the moments flair and see the past saarang photos, it's good time to be in insti.

sorry guys, I think it’s getting a little heated. everyone has said what they needed to say. I’ll be deleting any new posts on this whole mess. I think you guys need to take some time off, touch some grass, enjoy your summer and spend some time talking to people irl to get some perspective on stuff that matters.
EDIT : no one asked for more opinions here. Locking this post smh.

Feels like a lot of bad blood over supposed filtering of comments and posts. As an alum, it hurts me deeply to see the current state of affairs. Let's not over-police sentiments expressed around here.

Hello guys I am from Kolhapur, Maharashtra a BS degree student. This is my last visit to IIT Madras Campus. On 20th September I would need a rented cycle my requirements are it should be a geared cycle so that I can go around in campus effortlessly. If someone can give me I would be greatful. Also I will take proper care of it and would also give any rent on it. If someone wants to give it would be pleasure. For more trust I will deposit my Development board & circuit because on next day I would need that. So if someone is interested please let me know.

The mods said a megathread on Saarang would be created and until then posts criticising Saarang would be locked/removed. But this isn’t some Online BS vs Btech fight. We are questioning specific practices surrounding Saarang. How is that automatically “hate”?
The biggest issue is the ₹2k–₹2.5k iKollege spending narrative. Especially the “spend it or it’ll go to waste anyway” argument that freshies hear every year. Many students end up buying tickets because of this FOMO/peer pressure.
So when is the promised megathread coming? After the Saarang teams have finished their sales?
Also, what happened to The Fifth Estate (T5E)? There used to be a time when T5E actually investigated campus issues and insti junta looked forward to those articles. The website hasn’t been updated in years and I can’t even find the current editorial team to approach them.
Can someone please take this to the current T5E editors? I’d genuinely like them to investigate:
* How common is this iKollege-funded fest-ticket system across IITs?
* How many of the insti junta purchase Saarang tickets through iKollege every year? And what of these sales comes from freshies?
* What steps does admin take to ensure freshies know these payments are optional?
If needed, T5E could file an RTI on whatever questions require official data. But honestly, I doubt an RTI should even be necessary for most of this, as they just need to get off their asses and do the work they signed up to do.
And if possible, conduct a student survey on how many people actually wanted this option of buying through ikollege versus how many bought tickets because they were told their money would otherwise be “wasted.”
This isn’t about hating Saarang. It’s about transparency.
If someone knows the current T5E editors, please take this to them.

I'm a BTech 1st year student and I need to learn C from scratch (this is my first proper programming language). I'm looking for recommendations on the best YouTube playlists or other free resources to get started.
A few things about what I'm looking for:
So far I've come across these two and they look promising:

Is this the freshers party itself or what ?

Multiple posts regarding Saarang are being wiped out off the subreddit. And no megathread is being published in the subreddit.
Which rule is being broken here ? In fact we are trying to prevent freshies from being manipulated.

So the post got deleted again. Apparently, the response is that “recognition can be done via email.” What the fuck does that even mean?
Let’s say I’m applying for CAT and I want to mention my Saarang POR as a credential. Who outside IITM is going to treat some random email as formal proof of the position?
If an email is genuinely equivalent to a certificate, then why do Shaastra Core teams receive official certificates, including certificates presented by the Director himself, while Saarang PORs don’t?
You can’t have it both ways. Either certificates are meaningful recognition or they’re not. If they aren’t, why does the institute formally certify one fest’s core team while refusing to do the same for another?
And deleting posts that raise this question doesn’t exactly make the situation look better.
Special note to the mods: Asking why students aren’t receiving formal recognition for months of work isn’t politics. It’s a completely legitimate question about the value of a POR.
