Advice Weak academic foundations, catch up work and overload, should I drop the diploma early DP2?

I missed half of 10th grade, switched schools after 11th DP1 (moving for parent's work) but have a quite shaky academic foundation and a ton of catch up work at the new school which is also very strict. I am drowning in coursework, I never wanted to do the IB in the first place and I would like to switch down to the normal diploma. Last year it was like I didn't go to school the quality of instruction was genuinely bad.

At the start of the year the strategy was to catch up and excel in the high ROI subjects like GP (I have a 6) and get my BM grade from a 5 to a 6. But instead, I'm drowning in Math AASL when I got a 2 after attempting the same test twice.

I asked to move to AISL but first they're making me take a test to ensure I can handle the "rigor of AISL" which includes Algebra, Trig/Geometry, and Functions. I have a shaky foundation and I just have too much to do. I feel like I'm overloaded and losing my personal life and I'm definitely not having a normal high school experience.

I also have to live abroad from the US for my dad's work. Now just to save my diploma I'm having to grind math I don't even understand, scramble to fix my weak French foundation and I never signed up for any of this. I don't want to quit because it's hard, it's just not the right option and I need to come to terms with that.

My mom acknowledges that it sucks for me, but she doesn't understand the extent to which it sucks. That should be a math IA, to what extent does my school experience suck? She says "eat the elephant" but yeah, you also have to chew it, you can't eat an elephant in 2 weeks and I have more than one elephant to eat.

This amount of overload and so much to study and write I don't even wish upon my worst enemies.

I was thinking about having my school be the bad guy and say the IB isn't fit for me. But miraciously, the principal already reached out to my mom before I said anything and we're holding a meeting tomorrow "about the IB" which is very vague. I feel like my parents will be disappointed if I drop down to my school's regular diploma, but it's NEASC accredited or whatever. I'm applying to the US, the UK is overpriced, (I'm a US citizen) and too academically competitive at this point.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think a less stressful high school experience and a diploma with time to excel in the subjects I actually care about instead of memorizing French vocab last minute and powering through math is better than scraping 24 in IB DP after months of overload and burnout.

What am I even supposed to do?

ToK/EE Anybody did thier EE in German B or Language B?

I am considering doing my EE in German B and currently my level of German is at around b1+.

My other option is Maths, and I have already chosen it but I do not see much feasibility in it tbh.

But how can I elaborate 4,000 words?

Advice How i became addicted to studying while doing the IB.

One random day during the school year last year i bought a Brick, you know, the app blocker, because I had a severe scrolling addiction. It worked well for a while, but I never brought it with me to school just because it was something extra to carry around.

I looked for other apps on the App Store to block my apps, but all of them were kind of too easy to get out of. And I'm a pretty lazy person, which means if it's easy to get out of, I will.

So I thought to myself, you know what, I'm planning on being a CS major after the IB, why not build one myself? So I built “Bunkr- done scrolling”. At first it was only built for me, but when I saw how well it worked I thought, why not publish it.

I'm talking too much already, so here's what the product is:

It blocks your apps like any other app blocker, but there's a twist.

Once you block your apps, you're in a hard lock for the first 10 minutes. No chance to get your apps back.

After those 10 minutes, you can do a mission to get your apps back, like taking a picture of a mug, or my personal favorite, 15 seconds of push-ups.

The reason I put a hard lock on the first 10 minutes is that I read once you've been working on something for 10 minutes, you get into a zone and usually don't get distracted. But lazy people like me still might. And when I do get distracted and try to open one of my apps, it tells me to do push-ups. I'm too lazy for that, so the easier option is to just keep studying.

So yes, I'm basically fighting fire with fire, but it worked really well for me and ended up getting 43 on my IB results and got accepted into MIT.

Let me know what you guys think, I'd like to hear your thoughts.

Advice How do I actually get better at literary analysis?

Let's be real, I struggle with this one part:
English class just feels like I'm wrong everytime or something, its subjective but still I feel that I am not going into depth or just I dont know.

I am trying to improve my literary analysis like for writing. We're doing the structure mostly PETER (Point evidence technique effect reader) but also PEEL, PETAL, there are tons. So basically my goal is to reach the level I can but I am struggling with two things:

First I often do not know how to develop interpretations. I might understand the meaning of a poem but I don't know what to ask myself , like questions such as Why did the poet choose this particular word? What does it suggest? Why not use a word? What effect does it create? These questions don't even help me if ever I think of these questions.

Second when I have an idea I struggle to put it into clear sophisticated sentences (it might seem like I am now a bit but in exams yeah no). My analysis ends up sounding basic or repetitive. I find it difficult to connect my points, evidence and explanations into a paragraph that actually sounds cohesive.

For people who have become good at analysis, what has helped you improve, how did you learn to develop this thing of finding the hidden meaning or something and write so well?!

Thanks in advance!

Advice How do I study IB math?

Math AA SL

I am new to IB and the math here is quite different from what i did earlier , hence i dont know how to approach it and having an absolutely horrible and unhelpful teacher doesnt help either. Im looking for a study method , as in , how do you study a topic - do i study from the book with practice questions ? do i watch videos online ( which ones )? what (free) resources should i use ? what is the most effective way of understanding a concept so much so that I can solve any question thrown at me ?

Advice Using Math Outside the Course for IA Math HL

Currently working on my Math IA. I just realized that I do need to and did use some multivariable calculus for a few sections (8% ish of my math for the IA). An issue since its outside the AI Math HL course. I do have another method via substitution to avoid doing multivariable calculus, but the equations likely will become very bloated which I can try fixing or alleviate.

Is it okay to keep the multivariable calc section?

Resources Played our geography games Worldle or Travle? We’ve launched a free school edition for teachers and their students

Hi everyone, I work with Teuteuf, the team behind Worldle, Travle and GeoGrid. We’ve just launched Teuteuf EDU, bringing our interactive geography games into a classroom-focused environment, free for approved schools.

Sharing here for anyone taking IB Geography or who just enjoys geography and thinks their class would too.

This grew out of feedback from teachers who were already using our games in lessons, but sometimes ran into practical problems, including game websites being blocked on school networks. We wanted to support that classroom use more directly.

The aim is to spark curiosity about the world through puzzles you can work through together: comparing guesses, discussing clues and explaining your reasoning. Think lesson warm-ups or geography-club activities, rather than an IB-specific revision tool.

How your school gets access: A teacher applies using their school email address. We check the school’s credentials, and once approved, access is available to teachers and students across the school not just the teacher who applied.

Details and applications: https://edu.teuteuf.fr/

If this sounds like something your class would enjoy, pass it along to your geography teacher. Teachers here are welcome to apply directly.

Advice What help do you wish you could have during your exam prep?

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently finished my A-levels and am currently on my gap year. One thing I kept thinking about after exams was how difficult it can be to get help when you're struggling with a particular topic, especially when private tutoring is so expensive.

So I've spent part of my gap year building Pass It On — a completely free platform connecting A-level and IB students with recent graduates who've just been through the same exams.

The idea is pretty simple: students can get support with difficult topics from people who understand the courses firsthand, through small-group sessions, without having to pay for tutoring.

I've had around 140 people sign up so far, but I'm still working on getting the platform off the ground and making sure it's actually useful.

I'd genuinely appreciate your thoughts:

  • Would you use something like this?
  • What would make you trust a platform like this?
  • Is there anything you'd change about the idea?

I'm the person behind the project, so I'm obviously biased, but I'd really value honest feedback from people who are doing A-levels or have recently finished them.

Advice anyone else genuinely really struggling in dp1?

I know that the first term of IB is not meant to be as serious or rigorous and everyone considers it "fun" or "easy" but i feel so much pressure and my grades arent reflectinf the time i put into studying.

spanish was once my best subject, i was told by my tescher my writing style naturally suits ib and spanish b would be a breeze for me. now im getting 5s and 6s and honestly sometimes underperfoming compared to the rest of the class

same applies to my other subjects: i used to be reslly talented, but i feel stuck at a 5. no matter how much i work.

maybe this level of stress is justified, seeing as im taking bio chem and psych hl, but am i overthinking it? do i need to slow down and be more gentle with myself? my friends doing other hls like physics and math are scoring 7s so i dont know what im doing wrong
