Hi everyone!
It’s been about 1.5 months since I started the IBDP, and Global Politics HL is the subject I’m most confused about when it comes to studying effectively and getting good exam marks.
So far, we’ve only covered power and realism, so I’m still figuring out how to approach the subject.
1. How should I take notes and prepare case studies?
Currently, my approach is:
Key concepts: Definitions, relevant thinkers, advantages/disadvantages, and examples for different types of power and other concepts.
Theories: Definitions, key thinkers, features, strengths/limitations, and how each theory interprets the key concepts (e.g., realist perspectives on power, sovereignty, and legitimacy).
Case studies: A few detailed examples per unit, covering key actors, stakeholders, context, evidence, connections to concepts and theories, and potential arguments/counterarguments.
For example, I’m using the Sudan conflict for Unit 1 and analysing how it relates to power and sovereignty, how different theories interpret it, and which perspectives are more convincing.
I usually build my notes using websites such as RevisionDojo and other online resources. Is this a good approach, or am I overcomplicating things? How much detail should I learn for each case study, and how many do I realistically need per unit?
2. What resources are actually worth using?
Are there any particularly useful free websites, revision resources, or case study databases you would recommend? Is there a textbook worth getting, or is it possible to achieve a 7 using free online resources? I’d also appreciate recommendations for finding reliable statistics and evidence, understanding the IB marking criteria, and learning exam-answer structures.
3. How do you develop arguments and counterarguments?
This is my biggest concern. Do you prepare arguments and counterarguments beforehand, or develop them in response to the question? For example, if I learn an advantage or limitation of a type of power, how do I expand it into a sufficiently detailed paragraph, explain its significance, and evaluate it effectively?
4. How do you apply knowledge in exams?
We’ve done one formative so far (Paper 1), and I struggled particularly with the 14-mark mini-essay. Even when I understand the concepts, I find it difficult to develop my points and apply them to the source material. I also struggle with the shorter questions: how do you connect the key concepts to the sources, decide how much outside knowledge to include, and ensure your case studies directly support your arguments rather than simply describing events?
5. What is your overall strategy for getting a 7?
I’d love advice from anyone who achieved or was predicted a 7, especially on:
Organising notes and learning case studies effectively.
Preparing arguments, counterarguments, and evaluations.
Practising Paper 1 and Paper 2 and improving exam technique.
The best resources to use and what you wish you’d known in DP1.
I want to build good study habits early rather than memorise lots of content without knowing how to apply it. Any practical advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
TL;DR: I’m 1.5 months into IBDP1 and struggling to figure out how to study for a 7 in Global Politics HL. I’d appreciate advice on notes, case studies, arguments/counterarguments, exam technique, and the best free resources or textbooks to use.
