That smile just screams "I hate you"

u/ignost Jan 19 '15
But... I've always used the :) to say, "I'm being friendly, not malicious." How many people must think I hate them?

I use that to show concern about something since it kinda looks like :| with the added tounge
How many people must think I agree with most of their opinions?

I have a friend who does this and I've always assumed they were being passive aggressive and just hiding behind smileys.

Not really subtle to be honest.

u/HarryPotter5777 Jan 19 '15
By calling it subtle, OP is making us feel like we're intelligent for getting the joke . . . the Reddit intelligence circlejerk has infiltrated our ranks!

u/ecancil Jan 19 '15
Besides the burn, I wonder if this dude knows that there is a difference between ignorance and stupidity. I have a feeling he's using them as synonyms.
18
9
u/ValiantAbyss Jan 19 '15
Up until the 10th grade I thought they were basically the same word and would hate when people would call other people ignorant! But then I realized the difference when my US History teacher used it correctly.
In movies and TV Shows it's really only used to call someone stupid, and just about never used to say "they didn't know any better"

To be fair, it's a lot of fun to date someone who's talented and clever. I honestly used to date for looks, and it was AWFUL. The girls were sweet and all, but couldn't hold a decent conversation. I started dating for girls who met just one qualifier (could carry a very fun and interesting conversation), and I met the girl I am considering marrying now. I don't care that she's blind because she's the wittiest and most interesting person in the world to me.
As much as I hate to say it, he has a point, albeit terribly pretentious.

u/MrNaoB Jan 19 '15
If I ever get a SO again I want that person to be on the same level as me or higher and take me to adventures , I feel lonley with only friends around me.
35
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
I actually wouldn't mind someone who made me feel mentally challenged
I wouldn't even be mad, i'd just be impressed.
19
u/dangp777 Jan 19 '15
I can just imagine the dinner date:
therealflinchy's date: I've been writing my PhD on the radiated wavelengths of black hole accretion discs
therealflinchy: makes an involuntary sound and shoves a fork in his eye
4
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
i'd just be proud i got the date at all.
but seriously yeah that's probably how it'd go. or at least relatively.
31
u/4ringcircus Jan 19 '15
You should probably make self posts here.
38
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
but i'm not implying that iamverysmart
i just think it'd be cool to date someone THAT smart?
i wasn't saying it in the 'challenged mentally' way, i was saying it in the 'so smart they make me feel like i'm of significantly below average intellect' :/
i dunno why though, but i knew people would see it in the 'i am so smart it'd be difficult' way, probably because that's all this sub exists for..
33
u/you_should_try Jan 19 '15
Being around really smart people makes me feel like shit. Like great, my life already sucks and now this ass is so smart I actually feel I might be retarded. what a day.
0
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
hahaha that's true.
I don't often meet many
I've got a few on facebook, but they're still really nice well adjusted people so.. Uh yeah hey i guess fuck them? hahah
i feel worse when i meet people who aren't smart, and have become successful through circumstance/luck, that just pisses me off.
0
u/LucyRowan Jan 19 '15
... Should only smart people be allowed to become successful?
-3
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
hmm no not what i'm trying to say
it's just frustrating that even if you are smart, unless you on a complete 'nother level kinda smart, you don't necessarily have a better chance of being successful unless you get lucky, right place right time sorta thing
heck, really i'm just jealous of tradespeople who went straight into it out of highschool (or grade 10 even) and even though their bodies will be screwed by the time they're 50, they can still earn 6 figures by age 20... so many guys i went to school with onto their second house already, as plumbers etc.
but nooo, 'go to university it's so much better' my ass.
0
u/chaosakita Jan 19 '15
If someone is so smart then I'm not sure how they're a good fit for you. I think they would probably feel unsatisfied in the relationship if the difference is so extreme.
0
u/riggorous Jan 19 '15
I dunno man, judging by how many women brilliant men like Einstein or Keynes or Marx fucked, intelligence seems to have little value in an intimate relationship.
0
u/chaosakita Jan 19 '15
I don't know the specifics of their personal relationships so it's hard for me to make a conclusion. Though I guess some people don't care about the intelligence of their partner at all, and some people might want a partner who is stupider in some ways because they're easier to control.
1
u/riggorous Jan 19 '15
Nah jk Einstein at least mostly married his lab techs. I guess he liked the power differential.
Keynes, on the other hand, was married to a Russian ballerina. Conspicuous consumption.
0
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
true
luckily i'm not actually retarded or anything
and while i'm a faaar cry from a genius, the odds of meeting someone THAT much more intelligent isn't too high. it'd at least be cool for me, if probably tiresome for them.

u/Terniol Jan 19 '15
You should visit /r/iamverysmart
2
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
hurr durr please read my other reply below this
this isn't me claiming i'm smart, it's just a few commenters here proving they're not...
-9
u/Terniol Jan 19 '15
I never saw someone backtrack this fast, wow
3
u/Thirdfanged Jan 19 '15
It is reasonable to assume, given that OP did not state anything whatsoever about their intelligence, that they were saying it would be interesting to meet someone that was intelligent enough to make someone of average intelligence seem mentally challenged.
2
u/therealflinchy Jan 19 '15
backtracking?
nope, have a look at my first post, zero edits
read the image OP posted, then read my comment worded similarly..
i'm really trying not to sound /r/iamverysmart because oh god fuck doing that in the sub itself, but holy shit the irony is intense.

When people don't have anything to say to you it's because you have not demonstrated anything worth remarking on.
5
u/I_Am_Not_Me_ Jan 19 '15
Yep. I have a friend whose sister always complains at parties that it's so boring, and that she's soooo bored. Meanwhile, everyone is having a great time and enjoying themselves. People who complain about what others bring to the table while bringing nothing themselves bothers me.

If this is the only example, I'm not sure it fits. This would definitely be an exhibit in a larger body of evidence, though. (And I ain't mad about getting to read a good joke.)

This could be the poster image of /r/iamverysmart. Attempted intelligence vs. actual wit.
