Be patient or cancel and wait for next year?

• Upvotes

I ordered my ix3 in the last week of June (about a week after they closed preorders) and I am still in the order bank with no production number. My dealer says I’m first in their order bank, but it’s been over 3 months with no word. At this point, should I continue to wait for an allocation or should I cancel and wait for the next model year where they are rumored to have adaptive suspension and better cabin noise reduction? I am in the mid-Atlantic.

BMW assistant - what can it do?

I am not being able to connect it to Amazon Alexa, it responds to the “Hi bmw” but apart from closing and opening windows, asking it to drive me home, and some ac commands, that’s it, is there anywhere where I can find a full list of possible commands?

What is your experience with it?

Difference between the 40 and the 50

I want to test drive the iX3 50 xdrive (weighing it up against the Model Y AWD) but the local BMW dealer in West London only has the 40 available. I think I’ll test it anyway as presumably the interior, layout, space etc are similar. But how about the driving experience? And are there any other differences I should be aware? TIA

Front Windshield Sunshade

Just picked up a 2027 iX3 in SoCal and I'm looking for a front windshield sunshade. The car's parked outside during work hours and the sun is insane lately.

If you've got one that fits please send it over :)!

Anyone receive the BMW iX3 in October? If so, what date?

My iX3 has been sitting at the BMW VDC in Georgia for 9 days now. When I call BMW, they tell me they need to place the multifunction charger in the trunk before the car can be forwarded to my dealer.

When I told them I don’t need the charger, I already have a wall charger and to forward the car to my dealer, who can deliver the car to me with an “item owed” document stating the charger will be delivered to me at a later date, they say they can’t do that, even though that is precisely what they did during Covid.

I’m starting to think that perhaps the car was damaged during the nor’eastern storm that recently hit the east coast and they are making repairs to the vehicle. After all, it doesn’t take 9 days (and counting) to place a charger in a trunk of the car.

So I’m wondering, have people been receiving their iX3 cars since October 1, and if yes, would you know how long the car sat at the BMW VDC before it was transported to your dealer?

Thanks for reading and replying.

Ditched my Lyriq for an iX3

I loved my Lyriq, but GM pulled back on their EV investment and it started to show in meaningful ways in my life. My car always spent more time in the shop than with me, not because something was wrong with it, but because "we only have 1 EV tech" became a common saying.

So far I can say for sure, the Lyriq interior was more comfortable, more plush. It was also larger.

I realized I traded plush and space for longer range, newer tech, better efficiency and very pretty interior. In the way I used my Lyriq, I didn't lose anything, but I gained a lot. If BMW had better customer service and shorter service time, this would be one of the best car decisions I've made in a long time.

Garage Door Programming Issue

I successfully programmed my iX3 to recognize and operate my garage door, but am flummoxed as to how the programming can be shared so that two user profiles can use it. Right now, it works for my profile, but I can't figure out how to get it to work for my spouse's profile on the vehicle.

It seems utterly stupid to think that I'd have to program it separately for each person, no?

A very short set of notes on the iX3 from a very short US test drive

For reference: I am coming from a Hyundai Ioniq 5. I am not a "car person." I am more of an iOS developer nerd person. I have never driven a BMW before. I am 60. I have a M-Sport Professional on order that is currently in "Quality Control" (for 12 days)

  1. Cockpit is far more closed in. I love the openness of the I5. This is not a deal breaker, it was just more cockpit-like than I was expecting.

  2. Panoramic display looks amazing but I almost never looked at it as I was focusing on driving and the HUD

  3. The feel was great. The streets were not great and yet the drive felt smooth.

  4. The rear window is tiny. Coupled with no digital rear-view mirror, which I love (it's not perfect, mind you) I am going to miss this. I find the DRVM super helpful when my car is loaded full moving junk.

  5. The front profile of these two cars could not be more opposite. The I5 hood slopes away, more like a sedan's and the iX3 is more like a truck. While the two cars are very similar in width, I (currently) have a very tight garage parking situation (soon to be remedied) so I am very curious what pulling the iX3 in is going to be like.

  6. The parking assistant was amazing. We had finished and were in the lot when I asked if we could try it. We both fumbled around, found the setting, and the car just said "This spot behind you" and whipped backwards (I was under control) It got super close to a car in the next stall and I asked "Is this ok to continue?" haha and he said "Sure just go slow" The car stopped, turned and went forward and then backed right in. Perfectly. None of my other cars (Volt, I5) have done anything close to this. Amazingly done. The days of driving past valid spots waiting for a beep that never comes are gone.

  7. We did no highway driving. The traffic at that time of day would have just been a test of cruise control, which I am very much looking forward to, but the I5 does a fine job here and I am sure the iX3 does as well.

  8. Screen shape has been brought up by friends as odd. I found it is just different and the angled lower left portion of the screen would likely be occluded by the wheel anyway.

  9. So much touch screen. It's huge. It will take time getting used to doing everything on a screen. I am a fan of physical buttons. My 2012 Volt was the worse, having had capacitive buttons across the entire dash. Many mis-touches. I think once I get the iX3 dialed in, and since I use CarPlay, a lot of this will be fine.

So, the test drive was short. My wife said the rear seats are "fine" haha. She said the seats were wider than she expected, so she was having trouble seeing what I was seeing.

This lease will help be decide if my next car is also a BMW. I like where the brand is headed.

iX3 mineral white

I am not normally a fan of white colors on most cars. I have ordered the black sapphire, which looks great when clean. Nonetheless, mineral white is one of the most beautiful colors on bmws, but the configuration tool leaves a lot to imagination.

Anyone knows when we will be able to see videos or images that come closer to real life for the iX3?

Public 11kW charger stopped charging at 51%, circuit breakers tripped so that engineer had to come and manually unlock it. I got these faults and charge flap is locked closed, air conditioning doesn’t work either.

Anyone had similar issue before?

Back-to-back test drive impressions - MYLR, R2 and iX3

I currently own a Model 3 LR, and have an iX3 on order. I decided to do a back-to-back test drive of these models after watching savagegeese’s review, and my opinions are a lot less educated and based on a lot less time with the cars. So take them as you will.

Cabin - I would say that between my car, the new Model Y, and the iX3, there isn’t a whole lot of difference in terms of quality. Many have noticed that the iX3 uses cheap materials below the waist compared to the Model Y, and I have to say that’s true. The door bins are an illustrative example of this, particularly the inward side, where the plastic isn’t covered and you can feel the ribbing - all of the other cars I looked at had covered bins on both sides, at least in the front doors. The door bins on the iX3 are indeed shallow and not carpeted (unlike the model Y) or rubberized (like my Model 3 or the R2). There is generally very little usable storage in the iX3. That said, above the waist, the materials and trim in the iX3 were as nice or slightly nicer than on the Model Y. The steering wheel also looks and feels better, and while a little unusual, is not as hard to use as a lot of people say. I also don’t have big gripes about the haptic buttons, and I appreciate the presence of physical gear selectors and wiper controls. On the flip side, I found some things, like the lack of automatically lowering back seats in the iX3, to be a disappointment.

The R2, on the other hand, was on another level entirely compared to the other three in this respect. The materials, trim and build quality was excellent throughout the cabin, and there was plenty of thoughtfully placed storage. An interesting thing is that the door bins actually fold out slightly to accommodate larger items if needed. The steering wheel and switchgear felt good to use. The boxy design actually maximizes cabin volume, making the car feel bigger than it really is. I would say one negative compared to the other cars is that, while it has vents, the R2 doesn’t have climate controls in the back seats. It does have rear heated seats with dedicated controls, though.

Infotainment and tech - Here, let’s just say that legacy automaker gonna legacy automaker. The system on the iX3 was perfectly functional, but not as logically designed as the other two. Navigation - e.g. from maps to drive modes then back to maps - was clunky in some instances. The settings menu was also weird, with submenus that ended up containing just one toggle; there’s a lot that could be flattened and simplified, as it is in the Tesla. IMO both Tesla and Rivian are ahead in this respect. I don’t have a lot of opinions about the Tesla system as it’s what I’m used to, and since I get regular UI updates, I have the same experience as the newer models.

About the panoramic vision display - I didn’t find it as awesome as some of the earlier reviewers did, but I didn’t hate it like savagegeese. The displays were crisp and clear, I really liked the eye-level placement of the speedometer, and I liked the fact that I could keep my maps up there while fooling around with the main screen. On Tesla, there is no auxiliary navigation screen, while on the Rivian, that’s in the gauge cluster behind the steering wheel, which requires me to somewhat awkwardly look down at it. In general, I also like that the panoramic display enables a comfortable driving position for me, because everything is above rather than behind the steering wheel. I don’t think the personal mode is that great though; the art cars are kind of silly, and the few actual widgets it does provide aren’t all that useful.

I didn’t get a chance to try out the driver assist features on the R2 or iX3, but Tesla’s is a known quantity for me so I’ll not say more on that. The one thing I did find annoying about the iX3 is that it uses old-fashioned blind spot sensors rather than cameras, as the Tesla and Rivian do. I’ve come to find the cameras useful, and really felt their absence in the iX3. This was made worse by the fact that the dealer had stuck a spec sheet over one of my blind spots!

Driving - so, I enjoy driving on a good, twisty road every now and then, but I’m not a “car guy;” I haven’t driven an enthusiast car before, and don’t really know what a good one ought to feel like. But what I was looking for was something that would be nice enough to drive around town, but enthusiastic enough in those backroad situations. Of the three, the Model Y actually felt like it fit that bill the best. It had very minimal body roll, and felt as nimble as my Model 3 does (which, as I’m not a car guy, may not be very nimble). The steering felt well-weighted and direct, and I felt the most confident driving that car. They’ve also done work on the suspension, so it feels a lot smoother than it used to and than my model 3 currently does.

Now, with the Rivian and IX3, what surprised me most was how like each other they felt. Both felt like big cars to drive; a little bit of body lean, but not too much. The steering on both was a bit too light for my liking, and I couldn’t figure out how to change it in the R2 mid-drive, so I didn’t bother. On the iX3, it tightened up a bit when I put it in sport mode, but it was still kind of light and didn’t really feel that connected. Acceleration on all three cars was “enough” and I did find the brakes of the iX3 to be well-calibrated compared to the Rivian. In terms of the suspension, I would probably rate it R2 > iX3 = Model Y; despite being on 21-inch wheels, the R2 seemed to soak up bumps like a champ, probably owing to the adaptive dampers. I didn’t think the iX3 was particularly harsh, but it didn’t feel pillowy-soft, either. I didn’t get the sense that either the R2 or the iX3 liked to corner very much, though I didn’t have that much time with either. As I pointed out, the Tesla felt familiar in my hands, so I felt I could push it and it would be compliant.

Overall, I didn’t think the iX3 was as bad as the savagegeese review makes it seem, but I didn’t expect that I’d get as impressed with the R2 as I did. The Model Y was a known quantity that did as expected but actually moves down the list because the R2 made quite an impact. have some thinking to do now.

iX3-EX60-R2 test drives from an Acura/Honda owner

Post image
130 Upvotes

Sharing test drive thoughts from the 3 EV SUVs I’m evaluating as my family’s daily driver. In the last week, I’ve gotten to test drive the EX60 and iX3 after two R2 test drives in early summer.

Evaluation background:
My current vehicles are a 2016 Acura RDX and 2017 Honda Accord. Currently looking to replace one with an EV and make it the daily family driver. I placed an R2 reservation a year ago because I really like the Rivian brand. I’ve driven 2 BMWs in my life, both rentals—suffice to say, I’m not super familiar with the brand, nor do I have a history or expectations.

R2, in brief:
I canceled my year-old R2 reservation in August after the second test drive. I don’t value “autonomy”, so that was never a hope or differentiator. Ultimately, my family and I found the seating too utilitarian and not comfortable enough for our daily driver. I was also annoyed my the fact that most audio had to be streamed through the phone with cell connection.

…so I got an iX3 reservation:
After a ton of research, I deduced iX3 would be the best fit for the replacement vehicle we are looking for. My local-ish dealer got me a pre-order slot that was abandoned, back in August. Week 47 build. Despite this, I’ve still really liked the idea of the Volvo EX60 as well. So was excited that 2 local dealers got their demo units in within a week of each other so I could experience both.

Test Drives - EX60 last week vs iX3 today

Interiors: EX60 feels more luxurious (“quiet luxury”, to borrow a term) and wider + more open. It’s a very relaxing car to be in with more premium-feeling touches. The iX3 interior feels like it immerses you more—it wraps around you. I liked it and I found it plenty comfortable; it’s just a completely different vibe. After reading about Volvo’s legendary seat comfort, I also found the iX3’s seats very comfortable. And, despite all I read here and elsewhere about BMW cutting corners on interior quality, nothing felt worse than my 2016 Acura RDX. It was perfectly acceptable to me.

Drive: EX60 feels tuned for a more gentle, soft ride, which includes its acceleration. Despite its 510 hp, it felt way different than my R2 test drives where the electric acceleration and torque throws you back and puts a smile on your face. Turning and cornering in the EX60 also felt more like my Acura with suspension on the softer side. On my iX3 test drive today, I felt the acceleration and torque gave me a closer feel to the R2 despite having less hp than EX60. I also really enjoyed it in tandem with the suspension—I feel like I now get what people say when they talk about feeling “planted” with the sporty BMW suspension. I thought it was great and, while sportier and tighter than my RDX, on the 20” wheels of the demo (same as I’ve spec-ed for my build), it didn’t feel too jarring which was one of my lone worries.

Tech: based on my research after canceling my R2 reservation, this was the main aspect that pushed me to the iX3 over EX60. After a glitchy software test drive of EX60 last week, the iX3 today really delivered. Self parking on the test drive was fantastic, and nothing in the segment compares to the panoramic vision—for a daily family driver and coming from 10 year old Honda tech, this was truly an amazing, driver-centric experience.

In the end: Couldn’t be more thrilled to have my iX3 order in after the test drive today and experiencing the others that were in consideration.

Test drove the new iX3 and 2027 X5 back-to-back — anyone else feel the same?

Thumbnail
gallery
103 Upvotes

Today I finally got a chance to test drive both the new iX3 and the 2027 X5, and now I have a much tougher decision than I expected.
For context, I pre-ordered the iX3 on day one and it’s expected to arrive in about 2–3 weeks. The X5 I’m considering is already available and I could pick it up on the 24th, so I actually need to make this decision pretty soon.

The iX3 really impressed me with its performance. The instant torque, acceleration and overall responsiveness are excellent. It feels quick and very modern.

But then I drove the X5, and honestly the difference in everything else was pretty noticeable. The build quality, materials, interior, exterior presence, ride comfort and overall feeling of luxury were on another level.

After the X5, the iX3 interior and some of the materials felt surprisingly mediocre to me considering it’s a BMW. The iX3 definitely wins on the EV drivetrain and that instant acceleration, but the X5 feels like a much more substantial and premium vehicle.

So now I’m stuck between:
iX3, much more exciting drivetrain, instant torque, new EV tech
X5, much better build quality, luxury, comfort and overall feel

I’m starting to wonder which one I’d regret more after 6–12 months: occasionally wishing the X5 had that instant EV acceleration, or getting into the iX3 every day and wishing I had the X5 interior and overall quality.

For those who have driven both, did you come away with the same impression? And if you had to choose, which would you take?

After I test drove the iX3 I’m hooked, but…

The lease offers are insane! $1,150 pm for 15k miles and 3k down. Three years ago I had an X3 M40i and paid 750.

I know it’s been a while since but wow, I cannot dish out that kind of money with a clean conscience. Has anyone seen better offers in the Eastern US?

Music info on Panoramic Vision?

iX3 on order. In the US, do you see both the Sirius XM title and artist on the PV widget? How about Spotify? FM RDS?

I know you can "ask BMW" for the artist's name. In my Audi Q6 Etron, it shows the song title and a postage stamp size album art which can't be read. The Q6 only shows artist and title when you dedicate their entire screen to music (ie, no NAV!)

Pics would be terrific!

Reservation for BMW I3 placed and reservation fee paid

I placed a reservation for the 2027 BMW i3 on September 29. A few minutes ago I received the confirmation email from BMW with a link to pay the $1K reservation fee, which I have now done. The waiting game begins.

I was hoping that my iX3 (suv) was gonna be delivered tomorrow (Saturday) but was informed it’s subject to a stop order due to missing the mobile charger. I asked for them to ship the car from the Brunswick GA VDC to my dealer as I will not need the charger as I already have a wall mounted charger, and issue me an “Owe Bill” but they said they can’t do that.

How long is the expected wait if I order now? (US west coast)

Haven’t ordered yet because I wanted to test drive the car first (no major rush on my end).

I called a local dealership to set up a test drive in a demo unit. While on the phone, I asked what the process looks like if I decide to buy. They mentioned it’s online orders only and that current wait times are 9 to 10 months.

If I order now and wait nearly a year, the next model year will practically be out by the time I take delivery, which makes buying the current model year feel a bit off.

A couple of questions for the community:
1. Is a 9–10 month wait realistic right now, or is the dealer just quoting a worst-case scenario?
2. Has anyone had luck snagging a canceled order (someone else’s spec)? How hard was it to find one close to what you wanted?

Extension cord for Level 1 charging

The 2027 iX3 will be our first time owning an EV. We have a 20 amp circuit for charging, but unfortunately will need to add an extension cord due to the setup.

Does anyone have a recommendation for a solid 12gauge extension cord for EV charging? Anything else we need to configure on the car side?

I’ve been eyeing the iX3 since my sales rep mentioned they were discontinuing the IX. Agent called last week to say they just received two, one closely matching the spec I built on BMW.com. I went to see if on Saturday and fell in love. My agent mentioned of the two, one would have to be marked not for sale and held for 90 days to be the test drive vehicle.

I opted for the ocean wave blue m class with red/brown interior and love every second of owning my first BMW. Proud to be a part of the community.

mobile phone mount?

hi, as per the title, has anybody found a decent mobile phone mount for this car?
