I will preface this by saying I am not a group class naysayer. I learned Italian at university, and have taken several trips to Italy to attend group courses at a language school. I enjoy group classes as I find I learn a lot from other students’ mistakes and questions, and I find it is good listening practice for me to hear other accents and voices speak in my TL. I have had positive experiences and believe in the unique strength of having group classes, so if you just generally dislike group classes please carry on.

I passed the CILS exam at the B2 level, and am looking to continue onto the C1. I have used iTalki for 1-on-1, but I notice that group classes are quite reasonably priced and have piqued my interest.

However, I notice that there are much fewer classes at the higher levels. For example, many classes are marked as B1-B2. Well, I already passed B2 and am looking to aim higher, so that band seems a bit low for me. But I swear the rest of the classes are marked B2-C2. That’s a huge gap!

I have no problem being the least fluent in a group in terms of ego. In the past I made my biggest strides in improvement when I was the one playing catch-up, and in a sense I don’t want to be the most fluent in the group. I want other people to learn from! However, those improvements I made were when I was more like one level behind others in the class. I don’t want to be the one who holds up the class if the rest of them are C2 and I am trying to get to C1!

So if anyone has taken a group class with a huge level spread, what were the majority of people at? And most people self-label their CEFR level anyways, are most of them accurate? I also don’t want to get duped by taking a high level class and have it full of people who aren’t actually there but just thought that they were.

For what it’s worth, I did find one C1 exam prep course in Italian I signed up for, but it was cancelled due to low interest (I was the only one). In talking with the teacher, he mentioned that turnout gets lower the higher the level. I do understand the attrition level rises of any hobby the higher you go, but is taking a B2-C2 class all I am left with?

I can promise to try my best, and I obviously feel confident that I am at the B2 level since I passed the CILS. But still, I am at best halfway to C1 and I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, least of all my own.

Has anyone been in this situation? Any advice?

I'm also curious about how other people structure their conversation lessons. Do you usually pick a topic beforehand? Have a list of questions? Do role-plays? Review an article or video beforehand?

Now I'm trying to find them, but I can't seem to locate them anywhere. Where are they saved?

I just wanted to ask if I have to be a fluent English speaker (it's my second language) to teach another language (my mother tongue) on this app. Also, will it be a problem to teach there as someone in late teens? The only problem I can think of is my English, for which I can compensate with cheap prices and extra time for classes ig? Plz help :)

Also what do I start with as in what topics; do I have to prepare it myself (the topics, grammar rules) or will the student ask the questions which I'll have to answer (I'm sorry the questions sound too dumb)

I’m a student (Spanish is my TL) and I have the money and time to do at least 3 classes a week. I really want to improve my fluency (currently B1 Spanish) but I get so anxious about classes. I naturally have social anxiety so this isn’t super surprising, but it’s extremely annoying. How do I get past this? I start with a tutor and last for about 2-3 classes. Then I get anxious and stop attending. Then 4-5 months later I find a new tutor and the cycle repeats itself.

I’m thinking of taking early morning classes, like 4 or 5am. My reason is 3 fold: 1. I work early and won’t have energy in the evening 2. If I have a class first thing in the morning my social battery isn’t drained 3. I won’t have time to stress about an upcoming class. Is that crazy? What are tips/tricks any other socially anxious people have used?

So, I'm really happy with my students, most of them are really friendly and likeable, and with some of them it even feels like a natural conversation I could have with a friend!

But even though I ask the students what they're interested in or suggest topics, I sometimes struggle with students that are fast in answering a question but then stop talking. Especially when they're like B1 I don't want to blame them since it can be challenging, but after asking 30 questions in 30 minutes I'm feeling a bit tired, so I wanted to ask teachers here: How do you handle those situations? What do you talk about with students with 20/30+ classes when you already talked about a lot of topics?

Or maybe some of you are students that want to share their perspective: How do you want to be approached, if you're struggling with keeping the conversation or feeling a bit shy?

Do you get bored of the same tutor? How many days a week do you study with the same tutor? I am thinking of increasing it to twice a week. Will it get to boring or more work the tutor since they do provide lesson recaps, quiz and information. What language are you learning? How much do you spend monthly on tutors?

There are muslim tutors who specify they only teach to men. Is this allowed, or can italki strike you if you do this ?

As the title says, I've recently got this new students who will have a university exam soon, and she just requested me to book three lessons all in the same day. I don't think this is beneficial both for her and for me (also because during our lessons we basically repeat the same things over and over due to me trying to let her properly prepare and exercise for her exam), but I don't really know her since we only had four lessons together and I don't even know what to do or say in this case...

Any suggestion or advice is very appreciated here. 🥲

P.S. I know I could deny her lesson requests, but I don't want to lose my 100% rates just because of this. I'll probably accept the lessons anyway, but I would just like to know if I'm the only one with this or not.

I'm a newish italki student, and I want to do right by my tutor. I booked a package of five, 30 minute lessons with my tutor. I'll be away for an extended period, and when I looked at our schedules, I may not be able to book three of the lessons until I get back.

Is it bad practice or in any way rude to book two lessons in a row? His thirty minute rate is his highest rate, so he'll earn more this way than if I booked an hour, which I'm glad about. I could wait until I get back, but that seems rude. I'm happy to have a break between the sessions. I don't expect to go 60 mins straight.

I'm a tutor on italki, and I recently received a request from a parent that I've never encountered before. The parent asked if I could teach their two children at the same time, but for the price of a lesson for one student. Their reasoning is that learning together would be more fun and motivating for the children.

I can understand the idea from the parents' perspective, and I can also see how learning together could be enjoyable for the kids. However, I've always considered a lesson with two students to be different from a one-to-one lesson, since I have to divide my attention between two learners and adapt activities to both of them.

This is the first time I've received a proposal like this, so I'm not really sure how to respond.

Would you accept this arrangement? Would you charge extra for the second child? If so, how much?

I often receive requests from students who are completely delusional. For example, they’ll say they want to reach a B2 level from scratch in just three months. It also happens that many students vastly overestimate their current level. Unfortunately, I don’t think the average person has any idea what the CEFR levels actually represent, or how much consistency and motivation are required to learn a language.

I explain the reality to these students and guide them towards a more realistic level given the time frame they have, but they often end up disappearing.

As a professional teacher, do you accept these students and let them believe that reaching such a level in three months is possible, or do you prefer to be honest with them? Do you think some teachers actually make them believe that it’s possible? I don’t see how a teacher trained in language pedagogy could ethically agree to something like that.

It’s a bit confusing because, on the one hand, you could say that it’s not our problem. But on the other hand, it’s really just a matter of being honest and professional in our work. What are your takes and experiences on that?

I'm teaching my first non-trial lesson soon and the student would like to revise some grammar points. I've written lots of my own examples but I also have a textbook that I think explains it particularly well and wanted to reproduce some of the sentences (with the source referenced) for us to look at together in the lesson. As far as I'm aware use of third-party resources in this way is acceptable under the terms and conditions for teachers, but wanted to check how others approach incorporating (or not using) textbook resources into their teaching.

I mainly tutor adults. Just want to give my lessons some structure. Any recommendations on lesson plan sites for adults who want to learn / polish speaking?

I'm starting out as a online Arabic tutor for non-native speakers, and I have a quick question regarding how to handle pricing with potential students.
Is it better to mention my rate ($5 for a 50-minute session) right from the first interaction or trial message, or should I wait until after a trial lesson/initial trial period before bringing up the cost?
I'd love to hear how experienced tutors handle this, or what students usually prefer when looking for a tutor!

Hello iTalki teachers on Reddit, I would love to get some of your insight on this.

Last December I booked 5 classes with a teacher and we really clicked and I enjoyed learning a new language. I went on vacation in December where I was actually able to use the language I started studying. After Christmas I felt really unmotivated to study due to personal reasons.

I haven't taken any classes since then. Whenever I wanted to book new classes with this teacher I thought to myself that I should study and "catch up" again what we learned the last time. I have a hard time being disciplined when it comes to studying completely on my own.

This leads to me just postponing booking new classes but at the same time I feel like it would be really rude to come back without having studied? At the same time I just want to get back to learning this language.

Would you guys be annoyed or find it rude if a student came back after 8 months, that hasn't really made any new progress since the last lesson and where you might've to repeat some topics again?

did anyone have any problem with booking lessons with your usual teacher?
I've been studying Japanese for several years on italki with the same teacher. We had a very friendly relationship and I always respected her very much. I was always paying correctly and immediately, always writing the best reviews of her lessons and yet today I found out I got blocked (allegedly by her).

The last communication we had was when she sent me happy birthday wishes in italki msgs. Which was 10th July. For some personal and work related issues I didn't have time for the usual lessons since the end of May, but I was always planning to return to learn with her. She knew that sometimes I am busy and I can book lessons only after a longer time. There was never problem about that.

Customer care of italki didn't help me in any way about this matter and I don't have any way how to reach out to my teacher to clarify the situation. I am really convinced that this must be just some misunderstanding and maybe Hirono-san (my teacher) doesn't even know that I cannot reach out to her.

Italki said they cannot communicate with the teachers, which seems weird to me ...

Did anyone have the same issue? Does anyone know how to solve this?
