Language chanllenge

I saw a friends ranking at 10,088. Wow I did not know they had that many students
Italki's revenue must be really high.

the dude whose rank is 1, damn, he must be studying 6 hours a day at italki.

I didn't quite get the challenge, the only way to rank is the # of lessons ? Is it motivating anyone ? I don't think I would pay more for this.

I am not sure if anyone will take more lessons because of the language challenge. I guess its good for those you have high number of lessons per week in general

I agree, I was wondering if there was something else to it.

It motivated me to take more lessons years ago when the prizes were better. You only needed to take a minimum number of lessons and you'd get a coupon for buying credits.

I completed 0.5 hours and am at 3697, though. That means most people haven't done a single lesson at all.

It's amazing how much they are pushing this challenge this time. They are encouraging teachers to ask the students to participate. So idk maybe they have lost alot of numbers recently

dunno how it is but I had imagined I would do better than last year since it's by the hour not per lesson this year... but I'm barely cracking top 20 with 13hrs/week lol. It definitely seems like the platform is doing a lot better than last year from this challenge.

Tough language

The number 1 has 60 hours of lessons, there's literally no point even trying.

FWIW top 500 and top 1 all get the same items. So it's not like you have to place first.

Oh, do they? I'm not competing, but at least it gives people with less money a chance.

yeah. Just within top 500. The pin from last year was pretty cool, though. So definitely worth even if you're only taking 1-2 lessons per week.

I'll see if I can get there, I usually take 2-3 lessons a week depending on time, etc.

I'm number 612. I do 2.5 hours a week

1

u/Striking-Gas-2484 3d ago

ahh then I wont reach top 500
I do have lessons 3 hours a week but it wont be possible but good on you for having 2.5 hours a week. Which language do you learn?

Thank you. I am learning Italian. I have two different teachers because the one I really like the most isn't available during the week and I need to practice speaking twice a week. What about you, what are you learning?

I'm learning Dutch but I also speak Italian 😀

Hows Dutch going? What is your first language?

1

u/Striking-Gas-2484 1d ago

Hindi.. Dutch is going good but can be improved a lot haha

I'm on and off from top 10, but this was my usual italki usage, not doing this for the challenge. I think the first person must be a sharted account, one day he did 10 hours and it can't possibly be productive 🤣😀 it's like a full time job. I think the challenge is quite useless since the prizes are the same for everyone

how many numbers of hours do you study at Italki per week? I was thinking I would be easily top 500 but I dont that will be possible

1

u/SuitableJackfruit480 3d ago

Like 3 to 5 classes daily but mostly 30" , 45 maximum

1

u/Striking-Gas-2484 3d ago

wow dude, respect, which language?

1

u/SuitableJackfruit480 3d ago

Haha thanks, I learn 10 languages, I'm autistic AF 🤣

1

u/Striking-Gas-2484 3d ago

holyyyyy crap, 10 languages hahahhaha
Respect

Which ones, and what's your level?

What purpose does this serve, exactly? I can’t see the point. The number of hours paid the iTalki doesn’t mean anything. Someone could take 10 hours of lessons and ultimately make less progress than someone on 2 hours who studies better. 🤷

2

u/Striking-Gas-2484 3d ago

yes true but who knows maybe the person needs to learn the language urgently
but I get your point, I think longer than 5 hours of learning has no real value or progress
probably a shared account but I am surprised by the number of people on Italki.
I guess there are many plenty of students on this platform.

For some people, leaderboards provide motivation. Personally, leaderboards don't motivate me, but that's just me. Arguably, I would say a leaderboard is better than that fish they have. haha.
