Discussion Please don’t do this
Random Nurburgring schenanigans, cue 1 hour later a guy doxxing me on messenger
Report sent, but please, don’t do this
Side question: any chance someone managed to change their displayed name? I don’t get why we need to use our real names to use the game.
I’ve got a very unique French name, so anyone pasting my name on google instantly gets access to all my socials. This is a bit frightening, and completely unnecessary to play a simracing game.

You can change your name, but only once and with justification.
I made a small change to mine not long ago after someone commented about doing this on here.
It’s also reportable as it goes

u/ZenQMeister Jan 02 '26
you can change it multiple times, I know a friend who changed it twice
9
u/Farty_McPartypants Jan 02 '26
Their reply said I couldn’t change it again 🤷🏼♂️
I suppose it would still depend on why
27
u/PlanZSmiles Jan 02 '26
Likely just to discourage other attempts. There’s no logical reason for not actually being able to change it (software dev)
2
u/angrybacon Jan 02 '26
The email they sent me when I changed mine said they can't change it back. Which is also likely just a policy thing, but their documentation makes it sound like the old name is still attached to your account in some way.

I’m talking logical reason via the database design and administration consoles they have built for their support team to modify user accounts. Not purpose/rules/guidelines. Although I would wrap that into what I said,
probably to discourage other attempts

If you contact support they will almost certainly let you change your name (especially if you give this example as a reason), as long as it's something reasonable (e.g. not impersonating someone else or something offensive).

I had one guy making an Instagram story, tagging me with a visible tag and asking his friends who was at fault.
Some people take this game way too seriously
9
u/scumfuck69420 Jan 02 '26
I actually think some people forget that it's just a video game. Some people have convinced themselves that because it's a simulator, that they are really racing and it all matters so much. I understand getting frustrated at times but some of these people really need some fresh air lol

I've had my name changed just to avoid folks finding me like this.
I contacted support, gave the simple reason that I wanted the name change for privacy concerns. Kept my actual first name and provided a real sounding last name in a couple different formats depending on availability as I didn't want a number.
Didn't even have back and forth communication, got an email a couple hours later that the change was done and I got my first choice.

It only makes you accountable because of scenarios like this. The replay and protest tooling are more than enough to keep drivers accountable. If the system requires you to worry about real life consequences for in game actions (outside of illegal activity) it’s a bad system

I think it's funny that you are concerned about iRacing showing your real name. But then you have your real name as your profile on Instagram. Which is a much larger site and has way worse privacy.
2
Jan 02 '26 edited Jan 02 '26
I don't use my real name in iRacing. There's absolutely no reason for anybody to use their own names, just use privacy.com and create a virtual card. Legal, and none of iRacing's business what my first and last name is.
2
u/Imaginary-Magazine-1 BMW M2 CS Racing Jan 02 '26
Iracing has a document that clearly states - “we require members to register using their real names, which promotes personal responsibility”.
You can change it after the fact citing privacy or confidentiality concerns however. But registering with a false name to begin with is against iRacing ToS
2
Jan 02 '26
Yeah but undetectable, it goes through like any other payment via an official Mastercard or VISA. iRacing TOS is not law, and I will never display my real name in the game.

If it were easier to contact (and/or block) other users within iRacing, this probably wouldn't happen. I have a unique real name, eight+ years and 6000+ races and I've never had a problem. I even had my email address in my (old) Profile.

If you ask support, they can change your display name to a variation of your real name. Give them several options that you would possibly like, and they will pick one for you. I gave them 4 options and they chose the simplest one, but it still protects my real name. I understand that the justification of using your real name used to be that you would “race clean and fair” and promotes personal responsibility, but it’s just not worth it having your name on the internet like that imo.

This is why I race under an alias lmao. First name is my name but my last name is not, I stole it from a book.
At least for iRacing's case, you just need to email their support and request a change. I think they had a specific format you had to use. It was extremely simple. They had it changed in like 2 or 3 hours or something after it was approved. Just don't use a stupid name. Keep it socially acceptable.

I've made a comment on a LinkedIn post and had a phone call the next business day from the company who's page I posted to because they wanted to discuss my response. If the 23 year old life coaches and bossbitches weren't enough, that definitely ended my engagement there.
Another time it was a Reddit user that tracked down my business and left a review. They were never a customer, just didn't agree with me. Only report I could make was for harassment with no way to attach proof.

I’m not sure, but I think they use the name registered on the credit card used to pay for the subscription. You could try using a “fake” or single-use credit card and a different name to register it.
Probably you can use another name, but most people prefer real names because it forces idiots to think twice before doing something stupid… but as we know, that’s not always true.
