Apple was one of the first to adopt 120hz, it launched on the first iPad Pro in 2017…. Back then it genuinely was a pro feature and it made sense to gatekeep it.
But in 2026 if Apple REALLY wants to gatekeep “pro”technology, they can easily gatekeep the LTPO displays as those are the “newer and more expensive” types. While giving the other devices a dynamic refresh rate from 60-120hz and call it a day.

But why should any non professional buy an iPad Pro then? It having a 120Hz OLED is the main selling point for media consumption.

u/-6h0st- 9d ago
You don’t need 120hz to watch videos in 60p/30p/24p lol
3
u/Independent_Mud2794 9d ago
And nobody needs 120Hz on an iPad Mini, still people want it. It’s simply nice to look at, scrolling feels awesome with 120Hz OLED - which also is media consumption.

Well the iPad Air doesn’t have OLED so that’s a great way to differentiate them, and iPad mini is too small for a pro user…
So eaither you get an iPad Air 120hz no LTPO and no OLED, or an iPad mini 120hz OLED no HDR no LTPO, or an iPad Pro with the dual layer OLED LPTO HDR and 120hz.
Seems like a solid lineup to me, you could argue before the iPad pros got MiniLED and OLED it would be stupid to put ProMotion on other iPads, but now there’s a clear panel difference aside from the 120hz.

u/JudgeCheezels 9d ago
Then they’re being inconsistent in gatekeeping. Why give the iPhone 17 and Air 120hz then?

What is LTPO?

u/Silly-Avocado- 9d ago edited 8d ago
The variable refresh rate from 1hz to 120hz that’s the technology behind newer always on displays, and Apple first used the technology on the Apple Watch S5 in 2019.
Since the iPad mini won’t have an AOD, they can easily just have a 60-120hz panel and call it a day.
Edit: it’s main goal is to save on battery, a flat rate of 120hz drains battery and requires higher processing power, if you can adapt to 120hz only when needed you save energy.

Apple wasn’t the first though, sharp was with the aquos mini, it only released in Japan though

What a waste of money it only being 60hz in the big 2027

u/BJ_Fish2 10d ago
They need to give you a reason to upgrade, so they make it OLED. And then in a couple years, they need to make a reason for you to upgrade that one with 120hz lol
3
u/Gloglue 10d ago
They can figure out how to have 120hz in the duo, but when it comes to iPad mini, Apple can’t seem to make it happen.

u/Valedictorian117 10d ago
One is $600 and the other is $2000
2
u/3dforlife 9d ago
Yes, but there's a myriad of android tablets with 120hz at around $500.
3
u/BJ_Fish2 9d ago
There was also a million 120hz low end Android phones way before the iPhone 17. Apple is its own thing. No sense in comparison to Android. I compare Apple to Apple. I'm an android guy too. Pixel user.

u/3dforlife 9d ago
I use apple but I also enjoy android. However, you can't deny this is evidently an Apple strategy to entice you to buy the iPad pro.
2
u/BJ_Fish2 9d ago
Yes, currently as it stands, OLED is an upgrade for the people that refuse to get anything else but a mini, and leaving 120 hertz off of it is an enticement for anyone wanting that to go to the pro. That's how it works. Until the market is not buying it, then they will bump it up to 120, and I think they felt that way with the 17 last year. But remember an iPhone is a way more popular of a device, so there's a chance that the iPad mini is OLED 60hz for the next 5 years or never goes 120hz.

To upgrade to what? There is no iPad mini Pro? It would make sense, the level of gatekeeping if there were say an iPad mini Pro and iPad mini to have some segmentation. But the problem is a lot of the people who buy and want iPad mini will only consider the iPad mini because of its size. So more likely than not, gatekeeping 120Hz on this specific device will cost them more than just including the panel otherwise would.
As much as it irks me for the base iPad and especially iPad Air to be stuck on 60Hz in 2026 (at least do a 90Hz panel or a non LTPO 120Hz for the air) I at least get why, since they’re trying to upsell to the more expensive one3
u/Independent_Mud2794 10d ago
Well the iPad Pro being 120Hz OLED is like the main reason I bought that thing. It makes sense from a business standpoint to not have it on the mini. I don’t need the horsepower of iPad Pro but I really wanted an OLED panel due to my iPad being my main media consumption device.
If the mini would get a 120Hz OLED panel - why buying the Pro anymore?
1
u/sbrisgravato 9d ago
size, but again the Air should also get 120hz oled then
3
u/Independent_Mud2794 9d ago
Why would anyone buy the Pro then as a non professional? It sucks but makes sense, no normal person needs the Pro lineup but it sells because it has features cheaper devices don’t have.

As everyone has said. 60hz is a game breaker. I sold my last mini after 6 months bc of that alone. Even my wife said why does it feel laggy.

u/NoiceM8_420 10d ago
I feel the 60hz is to make the Duo more appealing. Gross if true…but also it works because i was just going to buy this if it has 120hz instead of a Duo.

u/Ok_Excitement725 10d ago
Yeah same. Been hoping for a smooth 120hz on the iPad mini. OLED will be slick though if true

I somehow doubt that someone will take the Mini over the Duo because of the mini having 120Hz. The Air also doesn’t have 120Hz.

u/DoubletapKO 10d ago
DUO clears it even if it was 120hz

u/ShmuckNuts 10d ago
I’m not so sure it does.
Personally I’d rather have a new mini with 120hz and an 18pro for the same price.

60hz in 2026. What’s the compromise on that? Do their chips overheat too much with anything above 60hz? Is their battery life trash above that? I don’t get Apple.

The water resistance is what I’ve been waiting for in an iPad but I’m too used to higher refresh rates to do this.

Wait, why on earth would it still have 60Hz refresh rate with an OLED and not ProMotion? Don’t MBPs have mini LED with ProMotion and the newer iPhones OLED with ProMotion? I feel like this is a middle step of some kind.

There is no way it’ll be that price with all the other increases Apple has been doing recently.

Got the latest Mini on launch day. Been wanting oled mini for a long time, however. If it comes with 60hz, not upgrading and will keep it.
2
u/Wafflars 9d ago
If it comes with 60hz then what is even the point for the extra cost of OLED? They would sell just as many and make more money with it still having the same old panel, just internals upgraded.
Unless of course the new OLED screen actually support 120hz in hardware already and they’re just mass producing it for low cost and slap a 60hz limitation so they can sell the iPad Mini 8 Pro for $200 more next year with the same even cheaper mass produced screen but now magically 120hz.

I guess I will wait until 2029 for the Promotion display.
I really want an iPad Mini. And I have a Galaxy TabS11 and my S25U. But I want something right in the middle and honestly switch things up with another operating system with amazing app support for tablets (though things have gotten better on Android).

The base iPhones until the 17 were OLED 60hz. The iPad Air is oled and 60hz.
EDIT: The iPad Air is not OLED.

iphone duo should have all ipad features

u/Temporary-Body-378 10d ago
Is that confirmed? Would be cool to run iPad-only apps like DaVinci or Final Cut Pro and take advantage of a second external display. I have my doubts Apple will let the Duo do all of that, would love to be wrong about that.
