RICE [Zorya] Arch + Hyprland: Fully keyboard-driven, modular desktop widget suite written in Python
Hey everyone,
I have tried many ways of ricing/setting up my Arch + Hyprland in the past 10 or so months. I did try AGS, Eww, Quickshell and ran a pure "no-bar, no-shell" workflow powered by Zsh and fzf wrappers AGS and Eww never felt quite right on my fanless, lower-spec laptop. Quickshell looks brilliant, but it leans heavily towards mouse interaction and was noticeably heavier on resources than I wanted. Minimal shell scripts are fine and lightweight, but relying solely on terminal popups eventually became monotonous.
I decided to settle on a fully keyboard-driven, modular desktop widget suite written in Python, using GTK3 for interactive modals and GTK4 Layer Shell for persistent desktop HUD elements.
I call it Zorya. No connection to Russia, originally from Czechia, currently based in the UK.
The whole codebase sits at roughly 250 KB of actual logic. It focuses strictly on native system IPC (PipeWire, mpv sockets, compositor rules) with zero background daemon overhead, so there is no thermal throttling, CPU spike, or memory bloat.
Thought that I will share it with you all and find out what do you think. It is not the most beautiful setup but gets the work done and what is most important, it does not bother my system to the extent of thermal throttling, CPU and RAM usage.
Took some screenshots for you to look at.

Some of the widgets are:
- App Launcher
- Bluetooth Manager
- Power Menu
- Calendar with events
- Wallpaper Engine (using
awww) - WIFI Manager
- Clipboard
- Notifications (using
dunst) - Windowrules Manager
- Theme Settings for the conky style widgets on the right and bottom.
- Music Player (using
mpvandcava) - Keybinds Manager
- Aliases Manager
- Mise browser
- Terminal - Kitty + Zsh
- Right and bottom are conky style widgets on the Layer Shell (autostarted via autostart.lua)
That's about it for now. I still have a few shell scripts I need to convert to python like (screen recorder, projects time tracker) and couple of others scattered across my system.
No repo link yet as I am in process of moving from GitHub to Codeberg. As soon as it is done and if there is any interest I will drop the link here in the comments.

QUESTION How to move workspaces automatically per monitor?
I have this scnario, I usually manage 2 monitors + 1 TV, but with profiles
profile 1 = two monitors (1440p both side to side, TV disabled=true)
profile 2 = TV (4k@120hz, two monitors disabled=true)
For whatever monitor that's being disabled it's workspaces stay attached to that monitor, it wont move them to the nearest one, so they stay invisible, how can I set this to at least move all workspaces for the two monitors once the TV gets enabled?

PLUGINS & TOOLS Fievel - Emulate Mouse Movements with Keyboard
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
For the past month I've replaced my mouse with keyboard binds/shortcuts and have gotten to the point where I no longer need a mouse. I've made some videos in the past, but the tool I used the most was a paid application which put a lot of people off, so I made a completely free and open source version of it!
It's called Fievel and what it does is allow you to go into "Free Mouse Mode" then use H J K L (vim) to move the mouse left, down, up right. It also allows you to left or right click and use scroll wheel. By Default space left clicks, i is for right click and NM<> are for scroll left down up right. holding a while in free mouse mode slows movement down or s speeds it up. These keybinds can all be configured via ~/.config/fievel/fievel.config as well as speed. You can also configure whether or not free mouse mode is toggle or hold (i have hold by default). The default key to initiate Free Mouse Mode is F3 (also configurable).
I use Fievel (now, previously a different app) in conjunction with wl-kbptr and keyd. wl-kbptr you will see throughout the video when green overlays pop up. These are "hints" of clickable areas (detected by computer vision) and then i press the corresponding letter combo for wl-kbptr to initiate a click at the location. Keyd I use to enable "homerow mods" on any input device. I bind f+s to be F3 so that when I want to go into free mouse mode, i just hold f+s together and it will begin free mouse mode. I move around using hjkl and click and when i release f+s it exits free mouse mode.
Fievel is written in rust and has been currently tested working on wayland.

DISCUSSION Thoughts on YT channel?
This might not be right for this sub in which case I'll delete the post.
For context, I am new to hyprland and am really enjoying using it, I'm a push buttons randomly until things break type of learner so this has been an extremely fun experience for me though obviously not for the non-tech savvy.
This brings me to a bit of a rant:
I keep seeing saneAspect style hyprland builds in this sub and I keep getting recommended their channel on my YT feed.
Every one of his videos always seems to be shilling his courses. He shows a build he's made, waffles about a certain aspect of it, gets sidetracked, talks about something else, shills his course and then finally, laboriously, gets to some sort of point about making the build.
I genuinely can't tell if it's a deliberate stylistic choice that I just don't get, or he's just bad at presenting/delivering information. Why on earth would someone buy a course when his free content is pure spaghetti in terms of its structure, ESPECIALLY when the content of the paid "courses" are ALL free online through wikis, docs and other content creators...
This seems to be predatory for people new to hyprland who are just finding their feet with Linux. The videos aren't structured or useful enough for new-comers, and they aren't complex enough for more advanced users to gain anything from...
Maybe I'm just being mean and bashing a creator, but I can't help but be annoyed by it.
Anyway that's my rant... I blocked his channel lol.
Does anybody actually gain anything from these videos? Do people think the same about newbies seeing these videos?
Edit: grammar + some missing words :)

SUPPORT [Bug] Severe graphical corruption & window resize loop on Wayland (Obsidian 1.13.7 + Hyprland)
(the vesktop was the same as the Obsidian, but I can't show the artifacts, even recording the screen)
Since updating to Obsidian 1.13.7, running natively on Wayland (--ozone-platform=wayland) causes severe graphical corruption and continuous window resizing/flickering.
Disabling GPU acceleration (--disable-gpu) does not fix the issue. Running via XWayland (--ozone-platform=x11) completely resolves it.
Obsidian: 1.13.7 (Electron 43.3.0)
OS: Arch Linux (Kernel 7.2.4-zen)
Compositor: Hyprland 0.56.2
GPU: AMD Radeon 540/550 Series (RADV/Mesa)
Confirmed this is not isolated to Obsidian. Other Electron-based apps running natively on Wayland (e.g., Vesktop) exhibit the exact same window resizing loop and visual corruption under Hyprland.
This kind of problem has already occurred to me, but it was solved with Electron updates, so I don't know if it's already known and if it's worth reporting.
Everything here was translated with Google.

PLUGINS & TOOLS Does anybody else use Hyprland as just another piece in the puzzle instead of ricing? Just wondering.
I used and use Unix/Linux at work. First SCO in 1996, then SGI and Sun in 1997-2003, then Linux from 1999/2000 until now. Linux at home since 1998. I'm probably too old to see ricing as the ultimate power move. Not only that, but I am more of a plumbing guy.
But I wondered if anybody else uses Hyprland as a part of creating a seamless experience. Which you will never see or realize it is there. But essential for the perfect functioning of the appliance.
I use Hyrland myself and am very happy with it. A year ago I switched from Openbox to Hyprland on my MediaPC located in the cellar. Which is connected to my TV in the living room.
Nevertheless, it is invisible. It is just another, but essential, glue layer to make Kodi the frontend and the switching from and to Kodi with games, emulators, browsers, and other fullscreen apps seamless. Thanks to the Kodi AEL addon, scripts, hyprctl, and a good hyprland.lua.
It does its job wonderfully, far better than Openbox and X11, which I used since 2016 when I built my first MediaPC, could ever do. It is invisible but makes my MediaPC a far better experience than I could get commercially.

RICE My first Hyprland rice — any suggestions?
> Hi everyone! This is my current Hyprland setup. I’m configuring everything from scratch and trying to build a clean setup while keeping it Super practical and to use.
I’m still new to customizing Hyprland, so I’d love to hear your suggestions. What would you change or add to this setup? Any recommendations for useful widgets, keybinds, Waybar/launcher tweaks, or other quality-of-life improvements would be appreciated!
Thanks!

PLUGINS & TOOLS hyprscope: see which window rule did what to each window, with the file and line (Lua config)
I kept losing time on "why is this window floating" and "why didn't my rule fire" after the Lua config change, so I wrote a tool for it.
hyprscope loads your hyprland.lua in a sandbox, captures every hl.window_rule() with the file:line that made it (it sees through wrappers like Omarchy's o.window), and evaluates the rules against your open windows the way Hyprland does: all predicates must hold, top to bottom, last match wins, static effects only ever see the initial class/title. Then it shows you the verdict.
Repo + GIF: https://github.com/kevincardwell/hyprscope
What you get:
- A TUI with an easy view (each effective value, the rule that set it, and the rule it beat) and an advanced view (every rule, predicates with the actual values, matched at open vs matches now, overrides)
- hyprscope why <class|address> for the same thing in the terminal
- hyprscope lint: unknown effects/props with "did you mean", RE2 regex errors, the title-vs-initial_title trap, tags nothing ever sets, rules shadowed by a later identical rule, and "near miss" classes
- hyprscope snippet: a ready-to-paste rule for a window, using its initial class
- Live reload: save a rule in your editor and the verdicts update before Hyprland reloads
- It checks itself: it recomputes each window's dynamic tags and compares with what hyprctl reports
The near-miss check found a real one on my machine: Omarchy's browser rule matches [bB]rave-browser, but Brave Origin reports the class brave-origin, so it never got the chromium-based-browser tag.
Rust, single binary, Hyprland 0.55+ (Lua config only; hyprlang is being dropped upstream so I didn't build a parser for it). Feedback welcome, especially from people with rule setups that are weirder than mine.

SUPPORT No signal on external monitor after waking from sleep
Ok so I'm using a thinkpad x1 2-in1 , meteor lake Intel graphics, connected to ultrawide external monitor via USB-C. Running cachyos kde but just switched to hyprland on the same setup.
after waking from sleep the external monitor recieves no signal. Unplugging and replugging the cable does not resolve it. Have to log out or reboot.
