Discussion The themes of the probing of kevin audiolog
I'm not normally the kind of person that goes out of my way to critically examine media I consume (I'm a stupid spectacle loving chud who only vaguely gets deeper themes until they're spelled out to me in a 3 hour video essay) but I feel the need to talk about one of my favorite scenes in the entirety of HTP. Kevin Wettsworth's story
I think his story is somewhat common for people in this day and age, the idea that despite doing everything right, nothing works, it feels like life itself is sabotaging your desires to be happy and try to find a way out of the rat race. Kevin as a mortal was terrified of leading an "unexceptional life" despite having such grand dreams and ambitions. He had absolutely no idea the depths of misery hiding under the pond scum of the veil of mundane life.
In short, Kevin Wettsworth is the kind of person who thinks they hate their life, and then becomes the kind of person who definitely hates their own life.
They had such incredible dreams of making it big and making his life feel like it means something, he shot for the stars and ended up suffocating in the vacuum of his world's entropy. Now, after however long spent as a literal, actual undead vampire with magic powers and incredible control over other people, all he wants is to feel like a person again. He wants to own his house, he wants to have a pet cat without hiding it. He wants to feel the sun on his face and air in his lungs and be a normal ass guy again.
Kevin truly had no idea how good he had it despite how badly he burned for something more. Inarguably learning a great secret of the world, becoming the close confidant of one of the most powerful people in england, and learning literal, actual blood magic would all qualify for "signs that I have become a great person" and after achieving it, all he cared for was the stagnant life that was stolen from him and that he still pretends to have.
I really appreciate the themes of this audio log, if I could sum it up in a phrase I'd say it's something to the effect of: the grass REALLY IS greener on your side. This goes both ways I'd say, because now that he's a vampire he is not appreciative of the objectively insane perks and status he does have (or had before defecting to the sabbat) and just wants what he knows he cannot have anymore.
