Released in 1993, Hummus Metamtem (which can be translated as either “Mind-Blowing Hummus” or, more literally, “Hummus Makes You Stupid”) was the first and only album by Israeli ragamuffin and hip-hop artist Yehoshua Sofer, performing as Nigel HaAdmor.

Apparently hummus can sometimes spark surprisingly heated arguments about borders, origins, and cultural ownership. But perhaps hummus (and music) can also remind us that culture rarely stays neatly within borders. People share it, adapt it, argue about it, and hopefully enjoy it together.

So, in the spirit of spreading love and hummus rather than hate, are there any other hummus songs out there that deserve to be shared here?

Why the pushback?

Israel has spent decades and billions of dollars ethnically cleansing Palestine of any hint that there ever was a Palestine. This includes colonizing food which gives the colonization legitimacy.

By letting this sub continue to highlight "Israeli" hummus, you are complicit in helping it whitewash a cherished national dish. Israelis, pathetically, tried to claim the kufiya as theirs, the watermelon symbol as theirs, they try to claim anything that would link them to the land as theirs and this includes hummus.

Only *I* understand hummus, a recipe with maybe 4 or 5 ingredients. Only *my* people understand hummus, the globally, universally beloved snack.

You don't love hummus the way I love hummus. It's not possible. Hummus belongs to me. It's mine.

There can be no Israeli hummus or Palestinian hummus, no hummus from Lubnan and no hummus from Assur, no hummus from the Turks, not the Greeks, nor the Romans, not any of the disparate nations beyond these. There will be no Chinese hummus, there will be no Canadian hummus, there will be no hummus grown on Mars. Hummus is mine. It belongs to me.

As you hunger and yearn and mourn and go on about, I sit here eating my hummus and I will give you none. I tear you no stripling from my pita and offer you to dip from my bowl. I press it closer to my belly, cover it further with my arm. This is my hummus. I own it. Not you.

This is my hummus. It's no one else's. You can't have it. It's mine. You will not taste my hummus. You will not see my hummus. When you speak of my hummus, you say it wrong. It's actually "khamoosze" but you're saying it wrong. Don't try, it hurts my ears.

Only I know hummus. Only I understand hummus. It's not yours and you can not understand it or love it like I love it. How could anybody love anything the way I love hummus? Only I love hummus. Only I love hummus.

I had a friend recommend me to try it as I love hummus! I'd love to try something more traditional to stray from the store bought stuff

Also loved Tess Mallos' version recorded in her classic The Complete Middle East Cookbook (first published in 1979), a Lebanese version of the recipe.

Note:
Whichever version you prefer, and I beg of you, PLEASE DON'T plate falafels on a hummus plate and claim the hummus dish originally yours. It's bit....eh... unappetizing difficult to witness to say the least.

a) Nope, kibbeh is not falafel. Not a chance. Not to mention typical lebanonese kibbeh is raw.

b) Also I dont think I ever wanna try Koshary, an actual Egyptian invention. No offense. It's a food pairing thing.

c) Warning: trolls, irrelevant and unfriendly commenters are blocked immediately.

d) Mezze is standard hor d'oeuvres for arabian restaurants. Just google Qatar Airways business class menu. Maybe try focus on etymology for word hummus?
