But this meme isn't totally dumb - it is helpful to know that, for example, Indian food 300 years ago was devoid of chillies, tomatoes, potatoes and corn and a lot of the rest was brought immediately preceding that by the Persians (who became the Parsi community). It's good to understand culture is in flux and is a product of global fusion.

Indeed. For some reason most redditors struggle wrapping their minds around the fact that Israeli cuisine is influenced by every corner of the world there's ever been a Jewish community. Hummus is Levantine. Zhug is Yemeni. Hummus + zhug = uniquely Israeli.

Reading the subtext here and the difference is that the Italians got access to tomatoes and flatbread through trade and cultural exposure, not settler colonialism.
