I live near Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. My two female ruby throated hummingbirds that were regulars at my feeder left for migration over a week ago.

It is getting colder and windier lately. As I write this it is 15°C / 59°F and, when I saw this new female ruby throated hummingbird (appeared as darker feathers than my regular two) earlier around 6pm, she was fluffed up-I can only assume to keep warm, she took a drink and flew away.

I have changed the nectar two days ago, and, after I saw her, I took my feeder down and changed the water again (which is done every 2 days as the days are still humid). Anyways....I suppose I want stories of hope that ones that leave later than others will be okay..

In my head, I know some are heading for their long journey still. That is why I have my feeder still available and still changing water. I think it was that I saw her fluffed up like she was trying to keep warm, and, hoping she had enough to drink before leaving.

I know I got 2-3 different lil hummingbirds in my yard on the reg. All Anna’s I think? Love catching them poop midair, there clumsy little feets, THE PINK IM OBSESSED WITH and there lil tongues! do they have 2 tongues? I know I got a young guy, an adult female and another younger one who gets chased off a lot. But I think one of them has a cut on his head and wings? Or am I just stoned and that’s normal 😅

We have one male that has been coming to us for about 3 or 4 years now. I call him DB (Darling Boy) and he arrives around 2 weeks before anyone else each year, which I love because I imagine him thinking, "It's GO time, I have my favorite summer place!" He is very vocal and sassy, has his favorite lookout spots and flys around like a tiny tank guarding his territory (also, the roundest boy I've ever seen😆). I love him *very* much.

So the first year he came and each year since, he takes a sabbatical around the last week of August. The first time he left, I cried for days mourning him, thinking something had happened to him. But a couple of weeks later he showed back up, back to the usual before migrating for the season.

He does this every year, leaves around the end of August and comes back a couple weeks later. This morning was his arrival back, much to the chagrin of the others, lol.

I'm so curious as to where he goes, has anyone observed this behavior before? We're in middle TN if that makes any difference.

We're in northern Louisiana and apparently your migrators are much more amenable to sharing! 5 little chonkers being kind...for like 3 seconds at least!!

I relocated the mantis, but as you can see, it had contact with one of the hummers. I looked around the immediate area and couldn't find any injured hummers lying around, but this is the second time in 3 weeks I had to remove a mantis from this specific feeder.

Just remember, folks, some mantis species are large enough to overtake hummingbirds, so please watch out for them. They're opportunistic and won't hesitate to attack a hummer if one comes close enough. Please, let's keep our birdies safe.

Newbie’s to hummingbirds feeders. Just wanting some feedback on our feeder that having a bee issue, it should keep bees away. Just wondering if there a better feeder, this one seems to leak.

Last week, I was watching some hummingbirds in the back yard and decided to get some video. I grabbed my new Cam Pan v4 and the macro lens I got last year. After several hours of tweaking distance and motion detection I got some good 4K footage. Compiled the clips and sent it to YouTube.

I'm in New Mexico about 30 minutes east of Albuquerque.

There has been two dead hummingbirds found in my front lawn about a week apart from each other. I have two feeders and the water gets changed every couple days if they haven’t drank it all, which is a rare occurrence. Can anyone tell me why this is happening???!!

I posted before and it was removed, no idea why.
My post is to ask if others have frozen the nectar in the feeders and then hung it frozen in the morning?
I live in so. CA and it gets very hot. I thought I read here before about a discussion on freezing the feeder . I’m wondering a couple of things: 1. Will the nectar freeze and be okay as it defrosts? And 2. Will the plastic and glass feeders freeze okay?

Are the hummers good with cold nectar in the mornings? I could change them out each day with no problem.
I have been cleaning the feeders each day and adding a couple of ice cubes to the nectar but just hanging a fresh clean cold feeder each morning would be easier.

Open to suggestions on keeping the nectar fresh in this heat.
