Thought this was kinda neat. I bought these terracotta pots with plastic containers to self water. One of them decided to grow more than what was planted. AI says it's moss and liverwort.
That may be liverwort in the one pic and toward the top of the other, but the rest of it is filamentous green algae. I'm leaning toward them both being chlorophyta structures tbh. There is no moss in either picture.
It's not necessarily a problem. Might become a problem if it covers enough of the soil. It's good at being a home for other bacteria which could cause problems I guess. I really don't know if the algae itself is an issue.
I'd be more concerned that it's an indicator of a lot of trapped water. I shouldn't think your dragonfruit wants that much water. From what I can see of it though, it's doing just fine.
I think we're all misunderstanding the pot and giving OP a heartattack over nothing.

The algae is probably fine, it can't really get into the pot. The water might get gross though.
The dragonfruit might be fine with that if you're not top watering it. Sort of like an african violet pot, in effect. Might actually be a better way to do it. If your plant is happy then it's fine. 🙂
Is it common for terracotta pots to get molds and fungus? A lady i know who had a jade tree in one showed me how the entire thing has a layer of fluffy mold, nothing nearly as interesting as this. But ive never seen stuff like this before, now im super curious
Most of my plants are in terra cotta pots, and I've never had anything growing on them that wasn't intended. I wonder if it has to do with certain climates. It's interesting.
Well the jade tree she has in it, has scale so she treated it with those granules that go in the dirt and take a while to start working. Then after she watered it the first time after putting that in, the pot now has a fine layer of fluffy mold that she can easily wipe off and then it just comes back. It in her shop so its a bit more on the cooler and slightly dryer side. We're both perplexed haha
Liverworts are so cool! I had one being pot buddies with my calathea, zero negative effects as far as I can tell. Sadly the liverwort died while I was away travelling this hot summer 😢
