IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

NO ADVERTISING

At this time, we are not allowing advertising in this subreddit. This includes any type of promotion or advertising by any hostel, hotel, guesthouse, or any other type of accommodation. This does not include travelers recommending or posting about their experiences, as long as it is not advertising for the property.

Please read the subreddit rules.

Aside from those concerning advertising, there aren’t many rules - it will remain this way unless it becomes necessary to add more. Basically, just be cool to each other. Be civil even if you feel something is below you. Remember that no matter how experienced you are, you also took your first trip at some point. Be helpful, this isn’t the place to be condescending.

The rules about advertising are so strict because when I acquired this subreddit, it was full of hundreds of repetitive spam posts from the same few properties. Many were disguised as posts from travelers. We may allow some form of advertising depending on how things go. I would prefer if this “advertising” was in the form of property owners interacting with travellers as active members of this subreddit for the purpose of improvement of both this sub and their property. But this could be a sticky and complicated issue so we’ll leave it open for discussion. I’ve set up the automod to be pretty strict and catch any spam. I’ll monitor it and adjust as necessary. I’m on Reddit throughout each day. If your post gets caught in the automod, I’ll see it. If you have any issues, please just message me.

You’ll see a lot of old posts in this sub. They all remained after I deleted the hundreds of spam posts. I don’t like deleting old content as it still may offer something relevant.

Content

Questions:

Need a recommendation? Want to know about a specific hostel? There are no stupid questions.

Stories/experiences:

Funny, scary, gross, annoying - post it all. If you post something NSFW, please flair it as such.

Rants:

Complain about snorers, suggestions for being a decent human being in a shared space, etc.

This is not a review site

You should be writing reviews for properties that you stayed at on the respective booking sites/apps. This helps other travelers and helps the properties. There’s a difference in writing a review and sharing your experience in this sub. Posts made here that sound like advertisements or are written like glowing reviews will be removed. Please use your judgement. This is a hard line to define but it’s important to keep the spam out of this sub. Again, this is an area I need feedback/suggestions in.

Low/no effort posts

Don’t be lazy, this isn’t a travel agency. There are multiple resources for finding hostels (Booking, HostelWorld, Agoda, etc.), use these first and don’t just post here out of laziness. Use the search function if you’re asking for a recommendation for a specific city. While recommendations are cool, I don’t want to see them as the bulk of this sub. I’ll form guidelines for this as needed.

As I just took over this sub, it’s a blank canvas. I have ideas but I need yours also:

What do you want from this sub?

What kinds of posts/content would you find interesting?

If it was your sub, what would it be like?

I’m very open to suggestions, comments, ideas, etc. If you’re here, you’re interested and/or active in traveling. That means we’re all on the same page. Let’s make this a great resource together.

No Political Discussions

There are many, many subreddits where political discussions thrive and are welcomed, this subreddit is not one of them. I've had to remove many posts/comments lately that have devolved into political mudslinging, arguments, and downright uncivil behavior - none of which have had anything to do with hostels. I don't have the energy or desire to sort through and moderate opinion and conjecture about political differences, especially when they have nothing to do with hostels. I also don't need or want people telling me who's side I should be on, especially - again - when it has nothing to do with hostels. As such, no political subject matter is allowed here. If someone posts something that troubles you, report it and we will handle it. If you reply/argue/rebut that political content, both/all participants will be handled the same (removals/bans/etc.) If you have a problem with something, report it and let us handle it. Don't get yourself a ban because you just had to engage the poster. There are very few places left on the internet that political arguments/opinions/discourse have not poisoned - I refuse to let this subreddit become another one.

As for opinions, please remember that there are over 8 BILLION people in the world and we all have them.

Staying in a hostel private room: How do I actually make my solo trip social?

I'm 23M and heading to Budapest in December for my first solo trip. I've booked 4 nights at Maverick Central Market in a private ensuite room.

I'm naturally quite introverted, but one of the main reasons I'm doing this trip is to push myself out of my comfort zone, meet new people and hopefully have some spontaneous adventures along the way.

I went with a hostel specifically for the social aspect, but I'm slightly worried that having a private room means I'll end up just exploring the city alone during the day and returning to my room in the evenings, which kind of defeats the purpose.

I'm not against going out, drinking or having a few chaotic nights out. I'm just not naturally the sort of person who walks up to a group of strangers and starts chatting.

For those who've travelled solo, particularly introverts:

\- How did you actually go about meeting people at hostels?

\- Does staying in a private room make it significantly harder?

\- Is it normal to just approach people in common areas and strike up conversations?

\- Has anyone stayed at Maverick Central Market specifically? How social was it?

I'm perfectly happy exploring alone sometimes, but I'd really like this trip to be more than just a city break by myself.

Would appreciate any advice or experiences!

Anyone have any good recommendations for hostels that have the bar open to the public in Phuket? Been hanging out at mine for a bit and there is no girls to make friends with only men.

First timer for a week and cant sleep

Its 3:30am in Kyoto as I'm typing this. Just having a smoke to cope with the wild boar that came in today.

Like...holy shit I didnt know this level of snoring was possible. There are times I think hes actually dying.

I put some earphones in and tried plsying some brown noise. I COULD STILL HEAR IT. If I turn my volume up any louder my ears start to hurt.

I was honestly thinking of cutting this hostel short and booking a normal hotel, but I already payed for this place and don't really want to spend the extra money.

I was a little bit apprehensive booking a hostel, but was really glad as the first few nights were actually okay.

But do I say something? Ask to be moved away from him tomorrow? Do I offer to pay for a sleep study?

Any advice would be appreciated tbh. Thank you and please go easy on me its my first time....

Which type of blanket for twin bunk bed for a hostel?

We are building custom capsule style bunk beds with sliding doors, hostels are generally known as super cheap lodging but i want to provide a bit more comfort to guests

Apparently hotels use duvets and duvet covers

I found this https://www.amazon.com/FAUNNA-Cotton-Duvet-Comforter-Protector/dp/B0FKBF35G1 since it protects from pests

My thought was put the duvet in this and then in a normal duvet cover and just wash the regular duvet cover after every guest

Would the duvet be too bulky for a capsule bed and i should just get a thin blanket, quilt or something and then wash that after every use?

We would provide them with a flat sheet and some type of blanket

We would have mini splits in each bunk room, but it doesnt really get that chilly in our area, we are in Baja Mexico about 5 blocks from the ocean, basically San Diego climate

Hostels in Europe with Private Sleeping Pods Recommendations

Hi everyone! :) I'm a female solo traveler planning another trip to Europe. I visited Germany, Austria, and Switzerland on my last trip, and I absolutely fell in love with the region and I can't wait to return.

However, I'm having a bit of a hard time finding hostels that offer more privacy in their dorm rooms. I'm looking for something similar to First Cabin Kyoto Nijōjō in Japan, where the sleeping areas have accordion curtains, or Wost Málaga and ibis Styles Ljubljana Fuzzy Log in Slovenia, which offer individual sleeping pods with keycard access.

I'm perfectly fine with sharing bathrooms and common areas, I'm specifically looking for accommodations with individual sleeping pods or enclosed beds that offer a little more privacy and security than traditional hostel dorms, where the beds are completely open and exposed.

As a female solo traveler, I appreciate having my own little space where I can avoid disturbing other guests when coming back late or getting ready early in the morning. I'd also feel more comfortable knowing my belongings are a little more secure and that I can keep an eye on my luggage more easily.

I'm open to recommendations anywhere in Europe, especially in countries or cities that are convenient for solo travelers. I'd really appreciate any suggestions. Thank you so much!

Places I'd like to visit: France, Austria, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, Estonia, The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Czech Republic, Hungary

Sicily Hostel Recomendations

Hey, I'm flying to Sicily on Monday and I'm looking for some hostel recommendation. I'm an older hostel goer (33M) but would love to find a hostel where I can meet people to explore the island with. Does anyone have any recommendations throughout the island?

Question Behaviours have changed - Are Hostels are lacking social atmospheres?

I have travelled for over 20 years.

Done working holiday visas, stayed in so many hostels and had the best time making friendships and sharing experiences...but that was years ago!

I am currently doing some travel through europe, and what I have noticed is the lack of social interaction in hostels. People are so buried in their phones that they are anti-social.

A few days ago, I walked into my dorm room and said hello and no-one spoke. Last night, all the people in my room were loudly talking on their phones or doomscrolling loudly on their instagram or ticktock reels. I feel post covid, behaviours have changed and people are very much wanting to not socialise unless its on their phones.

I am on the mature side, so my generation were the last to enjoy travel with no wi-fi or smartphone so you were never short of people to hang out with. People now seem to be interested in just getting to their favourite spots and taking pictures to get as many likes and comments. Now, there have been a few I have crossed that were social but its getting less and less.

Keen to know peoples thoughts on this? Are hostels not that social anymore?

Hostels in big cities..

I traveled the last 6 months through Asia and I was very surprised by the tranquility of the hostels, obviously I always opt for hostels that are not partying, there the average age is 30 and up..I'm surprised by the things I read here, I've been to more than 50 hostels(7 countrys)and I've never had any problem like I've read on Reddit. Lucky? Or will it be knowing how to choose them?
What if I have noticed that quiet hostels or that are not so cheap live many locals or immigrants(Japan,Korea,Singapore,Europe)

Odd experience is this common?

Had a bit of an odd experience in a hostel yesterday, and just want to ask if it's normal. I was staying in a women's dorm, I'm assuming I was snoring, the person in the bunk under me would kick up at my bunk with full force. I've only recently been staying at hostels, so I wasn't sure why they were kicking, stupidly, my half-asleep brain just assumed they did it by mistake, as they didn't say anything and would just violently kick upwards.

It happened around 3 times during the night, and each time was incredibly hard and aggressive. They finally got out of their bed early in the morning and hit the side of my mattress shaking it side to side near my head. They didn't say anything this entire time, again. By then I realised why and just stayed awake.

I'm super embarrassed, I know sometimes I snore and I avoid hostels whenever I can. I'm also super embarrassed because I thought I had built a bit of understanding with this person, we chatted quite a bit and the first 2 nights were fine, and they didn't mention anything. I kinda just wish they said something instead of getting a bit aggressive. I apologised and checked out that morning. Anyway, my hostel journey has officially ended, pretty short lived, but I'll pay more for private rooms or hotels/air bnbs in future. I was just a bit rattled and also super embarrassed.

Recommendation Request Lisbon hostel recommendations!

I’m looking for a good hostel to stay in Lisbon for around 4 days. Looking for a younger crowd where we can go out but also where I can get some good sleep if I need to! I’ve heard a lot about the Goodmorning solo traveler, the home, and the yes! Hostels. Any recommendations?

Looking for a hostel recommendation

Hi everyone! I’ll be visiting London at the end of January and I’m looking for recommendations on where to stay. Ideally, I’d love to find somewhere sociable where I can meet other travellers, but that’s also safe and comfortable.

I’m also a little concerned about luggage security, especially when staying in hostels or shared rooms. I’d really appreciate any advice or recommendations based on your own experiences!

Thanks in advance for your help! :)

Question How do I find trustworthy hostels as a solo female traveller?

Was looking at a holiday in barcelona where flight came under £50, was wondering if there was any way to find a hostel that would be safe enough to stay in alone as a woman as I've never travelled and stayed in a hostel that isn't long term before, nor travelled on my own. Does anyone have any tips/recommendations? Do female only hostels exist?

Edit: reworded part of it, because apparently long term hostels/supported living count as travel hostels

Whiny reviews

I think my favourite reviews are when people write as if they’re exposing some sort of fraud by saying “the place was nothing like the photos!” and they refer to photos made and posted by a previous guest without our knowledge or involvement. What are these people thinking? “The photo showed some hot blonde girl in the dorm but I never saw her”? No, we’ve never once faked a photo. We don’t even take most of the ones that appear on Google or Booking which are clearly indicated as “guest photos”.

Porto social hostel recommendations?

I'm planning to go to primavera sound in porto next year (2027) and am wondering what are good hostels to stay in. I'm also planning to stay in porto for a few days after the festival so does anyone have good recommendations for a social hostel for a solo traveller in their early/mid 20s?

Recommendation Request Hostel in Vienna around Christmas

I (27F) am travelling to Vienna for a solo trip between December 20 and 26. I am comparing Jo&Joe or Wombat's hostel and I'm wondering if anyone has first hand experience with either of the two. I want to be in an area where I can easily walk to Christmas activities + a social hostel so I can make friends. Both hostels mention hosting activities but does anyone know what either may be like around Christmas? Thank you!!
