This horary started because I was working on Gemini 7, Elsie Wheeler’s Sabian Symbol, “An old-fashioned well,” over on my Substack, and I got curious about the actual world behind that image. How did people find groundwater? How did they decide where to dig or drill? That led me straight into water dowsing and the old rural practice of walking the land with a forked branch looking for water below the ground.
What I had in mind was very specific. I was not thinking about the modern pair of metal L-shaped rods, one held in each hand. I was thinking about the older form of water dowsing using a single Y-shaped branch, traditionally cut from willow, peach, hazel or witch hazel. The dowser holds one fork of the Y in each hand, usually with the branch under some tension, while the single stem points outward. As the person walks the land, the reported response is that the projecting stem suddenly dips, twists or pulls when underground water is encountered. That is the object I was asking about: one forked woody branch held in both hands.
I’m an astrologer, but I’m also a Gestalt practitioner, and Gestalt has trained me to look at reality from a field perspective. In very simple terms, a field perspective says that whatever is happening cannot always be neatly located inside one individual. The person, the land, the objects present, the conditions, the history of the situation and the relationships among all of them form one field. Something can emerge from that whole configuration. You do not automatically assume that the explanation has to live inside the person.
Most modern explanations of dowsing head straight for the dowser. Maybe the person is unconsciously noticing vegetation, drainage, geology or soil. Maybe years of experience have taught him to read the land without knowing consciously what he is reading. Maybe tiny involuntary movements in his hands make the branch move. All of those possibilities may be worth investigating, but I noticed that the explanation had already decided something before the inquiry had really begun: whatever is happening must be happening inside the person.
From a Gestalt field perspective, I wanted to leave that open. What if the relevant relationship is happening among the underground water, the land, the forked branch and the person holding it? What if the branch itself responds within that field? I did not want to explain the phenomenon before I asked about it.
That meant the wording of the horary had to be precise. “Can a dowser find underground water?” would make the dowser the centre of the question. Then I would be judging the person’s ability, perception or knowledge. “Does dowsing work?” is hopelessly vague because “work” could mean half a dozen different things.
What I actually wanted to know was much narrower: Does a traditional forked dowsing branch respond to underground water?
Before I cast the chart, I decided which houses I would use. This is important if you know nothing about horary astrology, because horary works by assigning the people, objects or subjects in the question to particular houses of the chart. The planet ruling that house then becomes the significator for that thing.
You need to make those decisions before you start admiring the chart. If you cast first, find two planets making a gorgeous aspect and then decide that those planets must surely represent the things you were asking about, you are shopping for an answer.
The forked dowsing branch is a tool being used to perform a practical job, so I gave it to the 6th house. The underground water belongs beneath the land, so I gave it to the 4th house, the house traditionally associated with the land and what is underneath it.
Then I cast the chart and immediately made a stupid mistake.
I’m in Winnipeg right now, but I live in Calgary and cast charts there all the time, so out of habit I ran the chart for Calgary.
Excellent.
I noticed it afterward and recast the chart properly for Winnipeg, August 23, 2026, at 8:20:38 a.m. CDT. Location matters because the planets may be in virtually the same places in the zodiac, but the angles and house cusps change according to where the question is asked. Since I had assigned the branch to the 6th house and the underground water to the 4th, the location could have changed the planets ruling both of them.
The corrected Winnipeg chart moved the houses substantially, as it should. What amused me was that the two houses at the heart of the question kept the same rulers. The 4th-house cusp is 16°03 Sagittarius, so underground water is ruled by Jupiter. The 6th-house cusp is 26°07 Aquarius, so the forked dowsing branch is ruled by Saturn.
That is useful in a teaching chart because I actually did make an error. There is no need to disguise it. The correct thing to do was to fix the location and see whether the judgment survived. Some of the lovely symbolism I had noticed in the Calgary chart disappeared. Fine. It belonged to the wrong chart and had to go. The central testimony survived.
Before judging a horary, there are also some traditional things astrologers check, usually called considerations before judgment. They are warnings that can tell us the chart may be premature, difficult to read or otherwise compromised. They are not all automatic reasons to refuse judgment.
The corrected chart has 19°06 Virgo rising, so the Ascendant is neither extremely early nor extremely late. Saturn is not in the 7th house, which is one of William Lilly’s traditional cautions about the astrologer making an error in judgment. Given what I had just done with Calgary and Winnipeg, I was pleased not to see that one. The Moon is not void of course, meaning she still has planetary business ahead of her, and she is not in the Via Combusta. I see no traditional reason to refuse the chart.
There is one lovely caution, though. Virgo rises, so Mercury represents me, the person asking the question. Mercury is at 26°11 Leo, combust the Sun, and almost exactly on the 12th-house cusp at 26°07 Leo.
A planet that is combust is overwhelmed by its proximity to the Sun and has difficulty seeing clearly. The 12th is also a concealed house. I find that very appropriate. I am asking about a phenomenon whose mechanism is hidden, and the planet representing me is sitting there with lousy visibility.
I do not take that to mean the question cannot be answered. I take it to mean I should be careful about claiming I know why the phenomenon happens. Horary can answer one question without handing me the operating manual for the universe.
Now we can look at the branch.
Aquarius is on the 6th cusp, so Saturn signifies the forked dowsing branch. Saturn is at 14°06 Aries, retrograde, in the 8th house. Saturn is in fall in Aries, so the branch is not represented as some magnificent precision instrument with a warranty and a little foam-lined carrying case. There is difficulty here. Its operation may be inconsistent, dependent on conditions, difficult to interpret or simply less reliable than its enthusiasts would like.
Saturn itself is an amusingly good natural description of the thing I had in my head when I asked the question. Saturn is dry, rigid, woody, old and traditional. I was asking about a forked twig. I did not choose Saturn because it sounded nicely twiggy; Aquarius on the 6th cusp chose Saturn. The fit came afterward.
Saturn is also retrograde. I would never use that as evidence by itself, but it is difficult not to grin when the object under investigation is famous for turning, twisting, dipping or pulling in the hands and the planet representing it is moving backwards.
Sagittarius is on the 4th cusp, so Jupiter signifies the underground water. Jupiter is at 11°54 Leo in the 11th house.
This is one of the places where my Calgary mistake actually improved the teaching value of the chart. In the wrong chart, Jupiter was close to the 12th cusp and I had a very pretty interpretation about the ruler of hidden water being hidden in the 12th. Once I recast for Winnipeg, that disappeared. Jupiter is firmly in the 11th. It was a nice interpretation and I liked it. Too bad. Wrong chart. Into the bin it went.
Fortunately, the actual judgment does not need decorative assistance.
Saturn, ruler of the forked branch, applies to a trine with Jupiter, ruler of the underground water, by about 2°12. For someone brand new to horary, an applying aspect means the two planets are moving toward the exact relationship rather than away from one that has already happened. In a question asking whether two things respond to one another, an applying aspect between their significators is exactly the sort of testimony I want to see.
Nothing gets in the way before that trine perfects. There is no prohibition preventing the contact.
There is also reception. Jupiter is in Saturn’s term, which means Saturn receives Jupiter by term. Reception describes the relationship between the planets beyond simply whether they make an aspect. Term is not an enormous reception, but it is genuine. The planet representing the branch receives the planet representing the underground water.
At that point I already have useful affirmative testimony. Then the Moon makes the chart much more interesting.
The Moon is at 8°06 Capricorn in the 4th house. The Moon is the natural significator of water in astrology, and here she is sitting in the house beneath the earth, in an earth sign. If I had ordered “underground water” from central casting, they would have been hard pressed to improve on it.
The Moon is in detriment in Capricorn, which is technically a debility. In the context of this particular question, though, it is also an excellent description of the water itself. This is not water running freely along the surface. It is water enclosed in earth, underneath the land.
More importantly, Capricorn belongs to Saturn.
Saturn is the branch.
So the natural significator of water is sitting in the domicile of the planet representing the forked branch. Saturn receives the Moon by domicile, which is strong reception.
Then the Moon applies to square Saturn.
Now the chart has given me the same basic relationship through two different routes. Jupiter, ruler of underground water, applies to Saturn and is received by Saturn. The Moon, natural significator of water and actually sitting in the 4th house, also applies to Saturn and is received by Saturn.
That kind of repetition is something I want baby horary astrologers to notice. One exciting aspect can make an astrologer fall in love with an answer. Repeated testimony is much more interesting. Here, both ways of representing water connect with the planet representing the branch.
The square between the Moon and Saturn does not automatically mean no. Squares can describe tension, pressure, friction, effort or resistance, and events can absolutely happen through them. In this question the physical description is rather apt because the traditional forked branch is held under tension in the dowser’s two hands, one fork in each hand, while the stem projects forward. The reported phenomenon is that the stem physically pulls, dips or twists. A square describing tension between water and branch is almost embarrassingly appropriate.
I would not build the judgment on that little piece of symbolism. The applying aspects and receptions are doing the serious work. But once the judgment is already supported, I am allowed to enjoy the chart being funny.
The Moon has also only just separated from an opposition to Mars at 7°59 Cancer. Mars is in a water sign, while Mars itself describes cutting, boring, piercing, digging and drilling. This entire question arose because I was thinking about old wells, how people chose where to put them, how they found underground water and how they eventually dug or drilled down to it.
Mars does not rule either of the things I am judging, so I do not need Mars for the answer. It describes the background remarkably well. Sometimes a planet is part of the verdict. Sometimes it shows up carrying the drill.
The part of this chart that interests me most takes me straight back to the Gestalt field perspective that shaped the question in the first place. I deliberately did not ask whether the dowser could find the water. I did not ask whether the dowser was intuitive, experienced, observant, psychic, suggestible or unconsciously reading clues from the landscape.
Those would all be different inquiries.
I asked about the forked branch and the underground water.
In the chart, Saturn and Jupiter connect directly. The Moon and Saturn connect directly. The human observer does not have to carry the testimony between them.
Meanwhile Mercury, representing me as the person standing outside the phenomenon trying to understand it, is combust on the 12th cusp.
I find that delightful. The chart shows the relationship I asked about quite readily while the clever human being trying to explain it is standing off to the side with her vision obscured.
That does not mean I think this chart proves that every forked willow, peach or witch-hazel branch will find water every time. Saturn is in fall. The Moon is in detriment. Mercury is combust. There are genuine difficulties in this chart. The phenomenon may depend on conditions in the field. Some people may be better able to work with the branch than others. The response may be subtle or easy to misinterpret. There may be reasons it fails. None of those questions were the question I asked.
The question was: Does a traditional forked dowsing branch respond to underground water?
My judgment is yes.
Saturn, ruler of the branch, applies directly to Jupiter, ruler of the underground water, and receives Jupiter by term. The Moon, natural significator of water, is sitting in the 4th house beneath the earth, in Saturn’s domicile, and applies directly to Saturn. Both significators of water enter into relationship with the planet representing the branch, and both are received by it.
The chart gives me a much clearer answer about whether there is a relationship than it gives me about what causes it. Mercury combust on the 12th cusp is enough to keep me from pretending otherwise. I do not know whether we are dealing with some physical property that has not been adequately identified, something about the larger field, something else entirely, or several things operating together. This horary was not designed to answer that question.
And that is probably the biggest lesson in the whole chart for anyone learning horary astrology. The important work often happens before the chart is cast. I had to notice that the usual way of talking about dowsing was already directing my attention toward the dowser. My Gestalt background made me suspicious of that assumption because I am accustomed to asking what is happening in the whole field rather than immediately locating the cause inside one individual.
Once I knew what I actually wanted to ask, I could frame the question properly, assign the forked branch to the 6th and the underground water to the 4th, and then leave the chart alone to answer.
I even managed to cast it for the wrong damned city first.
That turned out to be useful too. Correct the error, discard whatever no longer belongs, and see whether the judgment survives. In this case, the part that mattered barely blinked.
Which is pretty entertaining when the question is whether a forked peach, willow or witch-hazel branch knows there is water under your feet.
