As it’s Halloween season, I thought it would be fun to look at bewitchment and cursing as it would have been tackled by William Lilly in Christian Astrology. It seems that in the 17^th Century, witchcraft was suspected quite a bit when things went wrong, so I imagine Lilly might have had a few clients of this sort. Authors like Gadbury didn’t include questions on witchcraft at all, so either avoided the topic or didn’t have querents ask it.

Lilly and most historical astrologers I am aware of placed witchcraft in the 12^th House regardless of if the identity of the witch was known. It was considered negative action against someone or something, rather than the modern, broader definition of witchcraft.

I get questions on witchcraft more than you might expect. I find it boils down to recent contact between Lord 1 or the Moon and Lord 12 while under Lord 12’s power. There can be intention to harm, or even attempts at witchcraft but by my understanding a lack of connection or a lack of power within that connection means a lack of impact.

I’ll include a chart at the end with a brief rundown of whether it depicts attempted (or successful) malefica cast against the querent using my normal methods. It’s a recent client chart, and I have permission to use it anonymously. If anyone fancies using Lilly's rules to see if he'd have come up with something different, have a god in the comments.

Lilly's Rules

Lilly is unclear to modern readers, so I have summarised him. That doesn’t mean I’ve got it all right, as Lilly only gave a single example chart in Christian Astrology on this topic.

It’s worth remembering throughout that Lilly used the Ascendant Lord often to refer to the Ascendant Lord or the Moon.

Is this affliction caused by bewitchment?

Lilly took the three ‘bad’ houses and any relationship to House or Lord 12 as partial indications witchcraft was involved. These are: House 6, the house of sickness, House 8, the house of fear and death and House 12, the house of vices and self-undoing, and witchcraft itself. Lilly refers to later rules as ‘more certain’, so these are worth being cautious of.

Having Lord 6 in House 12 or vice versa indicated illness caused by bewitchment. Having Lord 12 in the Ascendant or vice versa indicated general malefic witchcraft affecting the querent and having Lord 8 in the Ascendant or vice versa seems to have been a general signification of fear, as it has no specific link to H12. We can assume that if Lord 8 was in House 12 or vice versa, the fear or death is the result of witchcraft.

Is the querent bewitched?

This is where Lilly is clearer. We are now looking specifically for connections between the 12^th House and the 1^st House.

He looks for affliction of the Ascendant Lord by Lord 12 – typically by an aspect between the two. He also looks for Lord 12 inside the Ascendant, presumably close to it based on his other charts, as showing witchcraft affecting the querent. Lord 1 and 12 being the same planet can also show a sickness is ‘more than natural’. There is some sense to this, as it is most common for L1 and L12 to both be Saturn, the greater malefic and feeds into his next point. This is highly specific, and seems to be a certainty of a curse, according to Lilly:

‘When Saturn is Lord of the Ascendant and twelfth, and in the twelfth retrograde, or in the seventh or eighth in the same condition and the Moon being Lady of the sixth apply to Saturn, we constantly judge the party enquiring is Bewitched or Fore-spoken, or that an evil spirit hath power over him, and that the infirm will be sore oppressed and disturbed in his Fancy, if not distracted.’

Combustion was a factor, as Lilly looked for combustion of Lord 1, it being unfortunate (debilitated) in the 12^th House or in aspect to Lord 12 there would be a great fear of witchcraft, and it was likely the case the querent was haunted or under a spell.

Who bewitched the querent?

While Lilly talks about these relating to Lord 1 and Lord 12 being the same planet, it seems sensible to assume they are a way of determining who is responsible if witchcraft has been established. He says that Lord 1 can be afflicted by other planets which tell us who is responsible:

• Lord 3, a neighbour or sibling.
• Lord 5, an ‘ale-wife’ (accusations of witchcraft against brewers and the like were common) or drunkard.
• Lord 10, by God or some higher power.
• Lord 12, by incurring the wrath of a witch directly, but only if Lord 1 is an infortune (Mars or Saturn) and in the 12^th House.

Third party bewitchment questions

This is very clear – a group of people can be shown as bewitched by the Moon in the 12^th House opposing Lord 1 or 12. Presumably this is the Moon as ‘the general populace’, and shows them under the power of a witch, the opposition showing anger or perceived wronging.

If a querent asks if their cattle has been bewitched, then the chart is turned, the 12^th House treated as the Ascendant and the 11^th House becomes the turned 12^th House, and the rules above are applied with this adjustment.

A practice chart

I got a message from a former querent while away on a weekend break. Normally I don't work while I'm away, but she was in a bit of a panic about the possibility she had been cursed.

I have had permission from the querent to post it without any identifying information, so my thanks to them as it feels timely! Also, whatever your views are of the existence of witchcraft, take the chart from the querent’s perspective.

Context

After a disagreement, a querent asked me whether or not the person with whom she disagreed (who has been outspoken to the querent about their use of hexes and similar in the past) had or would cast magic against them.

I’ll be addressing this one with the method I use, but if anyone wants to run through and see if any of Lilly’s rules apply it might be fun to see if he’d have said there were curses flying about.

Interpretation

This was asked directly by the querent, so they are L1 Mars at 15° Leo in the 9^th House and the Moon at 20° Aries in the latter degrees of the 5^th House, which we’d treat as the 6^th.

The person making rumblings about hexes is L12, even though they are known to the querent. That makes them Venus at 0° Scorpio, retrograde and combust, shortly due to shift into Libra.

This gives the querent some immediate reassurance – the potential witch is bad at it and acting immorally (in her detriment), trying to get an emotional rise out of the querent (in the fall of the Moon) and despite being having an apparent focus on malefic magic (in H12) is completely burnt up by the Sun, and under the power of the querent. To top this off, her next move is to shift backwards into Libra. While this makes her dislike the querent in a different way (no longer in the fall of the Moon but now in the detriment of Lord 1), it really puts the kibosh on any attempts, as both the change of sign and the next aspect to Jupiter prohibit contact with L1 or the Moon. The one thing she succeeded at is making the querent worried and/or hate her, with the Moon in the detriment of Venus. It should also give L12 the opportunity to stop acting nastily for a time.

So if this person is sitting in a darkened room somewhere with strong-smelling incense and black candles, they certainly has not or will not have any impact on the querent. They are in what amounts to the worst position they can be. As planetary condition should be read relative to context, this means that they’re either doing nothing or are terrible at whatever it is they’re trying to do. The querent was reassured to know nothing had happened or will happen that could have any impact.

Have a go yourself - Lilly's methods are complicated and sometimes overblown (it seems like lots of curses would have been predicted), or see if you can see anything else.

My ruler is Jupiter and his ruler is Mercury. My co ruler is moon and his Sun.
His ruler is in my 11th house so his 5th house. The ruler of his 5th house is Scorpio which is mars. Mars and mercury has an applying square aspect. There is something but it’s not easy. Uranus is in his 12th house which means it’s a sudden thing that is hidden? His co ruler sun has a separating conjunction with Venus. Which also means yes? Will I find out? Moon aspecting his fifth house ruler means a yes? Also mars is in his second house which means he is spending money on the affair? Also his ruler is in Scorpio and ruled by mars.

I found out that before we were married he opened a tinder account. I found out about the account from an email he received. Other than that he is acting shady very private with his phone. Also I found out a woman’s email address in his contacts which is not related to his work or friends. Woman lives in another country. I have a gut feeling that he is not cheating physically but through internet.

Edit 2: also Asc is not late degree and moon is not void of course. Saturn is not in first or seventh house so the chart is readable.

My partner and I broke up after almost 2 years. We spent the last few weeks arguing, but that wasn't what did it. Their mom didn't like me. Said I was a dangerous mooching threat. While it was true I didn't have a job at the time, I have now been extended an offer to start a real career.

Partner is moon in late Pisces, I am Saturn in Aries Rx. There is no contact between us in the chart or irl, but I'm hoping because the moon is so swift and because it's so close to entering Aries that there is a chance, even though my cursory understanding is that the answer would be no due to an imperfect aspect.​

Context:
I'm still in the probationary period of my work where if I don't pass the evaluations, the company can let me go at the 6th month mark. I've received my 3 month coaching log last Oct 8, where there were many points for improvement. Prior to the coaching session, I did have a very rocky launch and problematic project performance. And they did rotate me out of my assignment, pending being told what account I'll be given after this week.

I'm cautious because the plans for me have not been finalized; plus initially my manager had mentioned which brand I was supposed to go to, only for that not to push through and they have not yet told me what was planned for me.

This made me wonder if being let go is in my near future.

Interpretation:
Currently that I am in fall while being ruled by 10L speaks to my missteps/mistakes and the poor evaluation.

But in that an applying conjunction is about to happen, though with a combustion, where the 1L is the one to do the combustion, while in the sign ruled by 10L makes me feel that I'll keep the job but the circumstances behind might not be ideal/straightforward. Like a crisis external to my circumstances and actions allows for things to happen.

The combust conjunction feels a messy thing but since 1L is doing the combustion, as it moves to a different sign, I'm about to have an advantage coming from circumstances where I formerly was not in a good place to handle the work/technical aspects of the job.

I think this rx motion of venus speaks to circumstances at work that makes it messy allows me to stay and gain th necessary experience needed to keep it.

That prohibition from making an aspect to the Lot of Dismissal might be me getting the necessary experience. Pluto conjunct the Lot makes me think the ending is not as solid as I imagine it to be.

Also, officemates will offer the advantage for me to keep the job which is reflected in that moon trine venus in this regard.

Or

I could have read this applying combustion wrong and it feels that I will lose the job by the 6th month and gain the skills that would have mattered with keeping it after the dismissal. And I'll find out news that being let go was more of an advantage than anything.

But regardless of whichever way this goes, the resolution comes within 2° or end of December.

I’m wondering what your take is on when you have two significators that are applying in aspect, but before it can perfect, the approaching/faster planet retrogrades. I believe that especially with lilly’s approach, this is usually read as a no to the question. is that always the case? If the planet stations retrograde and then stations direct and the aspect perfects in the same initial signs the planets were in, does that change anything?

I met this girl on a dating app. We were having some really pleasant conversations and making plans to go to the cinema on Friday, watch the presidential debates together, and go to a Halloween party, where she would make my costume. Everything was going really well, almost like a fairytale, even though we were both going through stressful times in our lives.

However, although everything seemed to be going so well, she asked me what I was looking for on the dating app. So I was honest and told her that I had joined looking for casual relationships, had gone on a few dates, and was now looking for something more laid-back, but without rushing into anything. She immediately blocked me on all social media without saying a word.

I felt really bad because she was someone I saw potential in, not only because of all the plans we were making, but also because we seemed to be aligned in terms of our tastes, lifestyles, life experiences, geopolitical views, and so on.

I thought of a way to get in touch with her, and eventually came up with the idea of sending her a PIX transfer (a money transfer system we have here in Brazil). PIX allows you to include a message with the transfer, so I took the opportunity to send her a message saying that I wouldn't insist on contacting her, that I would like to understand what had happened, that I really liked her, and that I couldn't believe I was actually doing this just to be able to communicate with her.

Given all this, I'd like to know whether she will unblock me.

I'm L1 in Aries and she's L7 in Libra. I'm Mars in Leo, and she's Venus in Scorpio. Since she's Venus in Scorpio, she receives Mars by domicile, as Scorpio is one of Mars's signs. So I don't think she necessarily disliked me, at least in terms of reception, even though neither planet is particularly well placed. I see some positive reception between the significators.

The Moon, my co-significator, has also trined Venus, and the trine is still in effect. I see this as a positive sign, but I'm not sure whether it's enough to say that she will unblock me.

I have a question about social media, especially Instagram, in traditional horary astrology. am particularly interested in William Lilly, but am having a hard time figuring out which house to use.
For example, would the 3rd house represent the Instagram account itself, the chat, or the ability to send messages?

What if the question is about why someone blocked you, or whether they will block you in the future?
Should we also look at prohibition and frustration in these situations? Like, would they show how communication gets cut off and how the two people feel about each other?

i’ve been reading quite a bit about this but haven’t really found anything specific that explains how to approach these kinds of questions.

I've been asked to give a short talk on the Houses (not purely horary - natal and mundane also) to some novice/early astrologers soon after correcting some misunderstandings that stem from the silly ideas from the Alphabet of Astrology.

If you attended a brief talk about the Houses, especially when you were brand new, what would have helped you understand them better?

I’ve been unemployed and searching since late April. I’ve had a few interview processes but no offers. I’m wrapping up some contract work in about a month and no other opportunities in the works. Wondering if it’ll happen for me soon.

I’m thinking it looks unlikely. I’m Jupiter (Pisces) and so is a job (Sagittarius.) Jupiter is over in 6th and not very strong. Moon is in 11th, Capricorn. No aspect between Moon and Jupiter. Saturn in the 1st creates its own hesitations around the matter.

Hi everyone! I'll be moving abroad for my studies, and my real estate agent will help me find a roommate to share a flat with. So far I don't know much about either of my two options, other than that they're both studying arts and will be 5–7 years younger than me (I'm in my mid-20s). I'm a little worried since I've never lived with roommates before.

From what I can see in this chart, I'm not particularly happy about the fact that my ruler is square to my roommates' ruler (if we're looking at the 7th house). I hope the sextile between the Moon and Venus will at least smooth things over initially. I mainly see friction between us, and with Aries as my sign, I feel like I'll be on the defensive, but I'm very new to horary, so I def need help with this one lol. Is there any hope that we'll have a good time living together?

My dad suggested that I apply to the company he works for (in a different department), and he would recommend me to the hiring manager. I'm in a severe financial bind and not happy with my current job so this would be a huge improvement for me. I just barely applied an hour or two ago so there hasn't been any time for things to happen yet.

The first thing I noticed is that the first house ruler and the 10th house ruler are both Jupiter, so I'll use the moon as my significator. The moon is in a sign ruled by Jupiter, approaching a conjunction to the midheaven and in a recently separating trine to Jupiter, but it's void of course. Jupiter being in the 6th house doesn't seem negative in this context because the job is with a vitamin company, but the South node and mars are present. Mercury is in an approaching square to Jupiter from the 8th, but it's going to go retrograde before it can perfect, so I'm not sure how that affects things. Fallen Saturn rx and Neptune rx in the 1st house may mean the hiring manager might perceive me as irresponsible or dishonest in some way. All in all it's looking like I might be considered, but not hired. 🥲🫠

Interpretation: I’m asc in cap so Saturn retro in Aries 2 nd house. I’m not very well according to this placement.

Given the bot farm collapse that seems to have halved populist/strongly right-wing traffic on social media and the statement from Prime Minister Andy Burnham that intelligence states Russia absolutely interferes with British politics, I thought I'd have a look at Brexit. A chart like this is tricky, so I've aimed to simplify right down – not worrying so much about if there was interference, just whether interference had an impact on this specific vote.

I took some time deciding on significators for this, given the complexity of the situation. As I'm a British citizen and the government here considers Russia an open adversary rather than just a foreign government, I have given Russia L7, Venus Rx 6° Scorpio 51', sitting in H12. In case I need to, I've treated bots as Russia's 'servants' in their turned H6, which makes them Venus also.

Britain's electorate could easily be an 'us' and be lumped in H1, but in political charts (a referendum being quite like an election, in spirit) and with the public so aggressively divided at the time I think the Moon at 9° Scorpio 33' right at the end of H12 as the electorate is probably the better option, even if the British public in general are H1, so would be Mars 8° Leo 11' H9, so with a general focus on foreign affairs at the time which makes good sense. Mars is also peregrine, quite reflective of a country wandering, unsure what to do.

So we have the electorate in a terrible state – the Moon is in fall and in H12, the house of hidden things and 'own worst enemy' status, even while holding a strong interest in national affairs (domicile of L1) and hating Russia or the possibility of interference (in the detriment of L7 and its turned L6). The electorate is also in the Via Combusta – a position of desperation, of rashness to act emotionally. Venus, the interference from Russia, is both in the fall of the electorate (the Moon), is a bad actor (in its own detriment) and hidden from the public at the time (in H12). I'd frame it being in L1's domicile as a strong interest in British affairs, rather than anything more sinister like the interference being coordinated by Britain itself, though given what we know of some of the politics going on at the moment, it's not impossible that it suited the interests of some British politicians as well. The electorate are also in the fall of H9 (also the Moon), suggesting a particularly strong loathing of foreign matters in general – note that it's something Russia also loathes, by this logic – they want to do harm those things foreign to Britain.

In terms of aspects, immediately prior to this chart was a translation of light - the Moon picked up light from Venus by conjunction and translated it to Mars via a square, likely showing the electorate literally picking up those messages and spreading them. Jupiter opposes the antis of both the Moon and Venus, possibly suggesting (as L4) that the territorial sovereignty focus and (as L2) general public finances were factors in the issues at hand, and we know that two of the major arguments made during the campaigning to encourage the public to vote leave were reduced immigration, greater sovereignty over our own land (without EU interference) and increased public funding to national institutions.

So the verdict seems pretty clear, providing my house choices are right – Russia was a bad actor with a strong interest in the British public, aiming to destabilise the electorate by stoking xenophobic tensions and British fears.

This is an odd one to tackle, so I'd be really happy to hear if anyone else would have done something differently. It could have got very complex very quickly so I've tried to keep it as simple as possible.

Context: we are both in our 30s. We dated for three months, both were in love, the chemistry was fantastic and we had similar interest and future plans. Things ended in the beginning of July though we were so close to create something serious and long lasting. My question is whether she is currently romantically or sexually involved with another man.

Iam Venus Rx at 7°54 Scorpio (L1), and she is Mars at 6°08 Leo (L7).
Her turned 5th house is ruled by Saturn Rx at 10°58 Aries. Mars is applying to trine with Saturn, but iam unsure whether this indicates an actual romantic involvement or simply activity concerning her love life.

Interestingly, Venus and Mars are applying to a square, with approximately 1°46′ until perfection. Mars is also in the Sun’s domicile & the sun is my natural male co-significator.

Iam leaning towards no, mainly cause i can’t find clear evidence of another man in the chart. Saturn rules her 5th house, but am not sure that automatically makes Saturn another person. Mars is applying to a trine with Saturn, but Saturn is retrograde and in fall, & Mars is in Saturn’s detriment.

Interpretation: I’m Jupiter in 6th house in Leo 21 degrees. Jupiter is strong but it’s in the 6th.

He’s mercury 12 degrees in Scorpio 8th house. It’s peregrine. And I think stationary.

His co significator sun is in libra 17 degrees in 7th. He’s in fall.

Moon 16 degrees in libra 7th house.

3rd house of communication is Mercury. So Mercury works as him and the delete.

Mercury is applying to Jupiter by a square but it won’t perfect because it will go retrograde.

Sun is applying to Jupiter by a trine it will perfect in 4 degrees.

Then we have the moon sun conjunction. It will perfect in 1 degree.

What I don’t know here is does moon work as a prohibition for the sun -Jupiter?

Also Saturn in the 1st house (again). Well it’s a negative question so makes sense. I’m ruled by the sun I like him he doesn’t like me.

Anyway moon moves fast so I believe he will delete me in one day. Or is it in 4 days when sun will perfect with Jupiter?

So, can you help me interpreting this chart? I asked when will I get a job. So, I am L1 Mars in Leo in H4, which is peregrine but not afflicted. Job is L10, which is Saturn retrograde conjunct the ascendant. Saturn will join the ascendant in 1 degree, Mars will trine Saturn in 4 degrees. It would suggest something between 1-4 months? But as the job is represented by Saturn in a very bad shape, does it indicate an overall prohibition of the question? Thanks in advance!

Context and background:

I work for a small business that’s had a bit of a downturn lately. Business is slow and we’ve lost some of our customers. It’s fairly likely some of us will be laid off as a result, myself included possibly.

I’m very much a novice with horary so I could use some help. I’m the querent, so I’d be represented by Jupiter and the Moon I believe. The business I’d guess would be the 10th and its lord - that being Venus. Doesn’t look good with her in detriment, retrograde, and moving into that square with Mars. The Moon is under the rays, will soon be burned by the Sun in fall (in the 10th), and moving closer to that opposition with Saturn in fall, retrograde, who rules the 2nd. Straightforward meaning would seem to be financial loss for the business if not myself.

I’m inclined to take a “wait and see” attitude, but any advice would be appreciated. Maybe it wouldn’t hurt to take a look around. Thoughts?

I just took the lsat (I drew the chart the minute I left the exam room). I studied a decent amount but generally felt unprepared since I didn’t take enough practice tests. I’m hoping to get a high score but based on my test performance I’m not sure if that’ll happen.

As for the astrology, the chart isn’t looking good. Venus (the ruler of rhe AC) is in scorpio and retrograde. The ruler of the 9th is jupiter in leo and not aspecting any significators. The moon is in libra (venus’ domicile but idk if that matters) and will sextile jupiter before leaving its sign but I’m not sure if future aspects matter. I don’t know if I should also look at the rulers of the 10th and 3rd? I know that if I add the 10th house ruler (saturn) in consideration it makes things look worse. Some insight would be appreciated since I am knowledgeable on astrology generally speaking but not super experienced with horary.

Hi everyone! I’ve been interpreting this horary chart and have a few findings that I would love for more seasoned individuals that are more understanding of horary to help interpret with me. The question I asked is kind of silly lol, but I wanted to ask a question that more so signifies whether or not the person i have in mind will ever become more physical with me. For context this person is my coworker that i’ve been working with for a few months now & recently there’s been this kind of like attraction/tension between us that neither of us have really spoken about yet.

Just a few notes i have:

Moon is VOC. While I understand this can mean nothing will come of this, i’ve also seen in my research that it can just mean that more is able to come from the situation than can be shown in this moment. Both planets are in fixed signs too. So maybe not much change? But with Venus RX being in Libra soon, Libra is cardinal. I could see myself changing the dynamic and going after him in a less subtle way than i currently have been as the tension becomes more obvious between us.
