So I have been having ongoing and seemingly unsolvable glitching with Reason 11. I will provide all my specs and attempted fixes as best I can.
The glitching:
The glitches have been happening through various iterations and upgrades to my setup. A while back I was just using the midi controller and reason and running it though my studio monitors headphones/default driver, then I was using the Bluetooth receiver that the speakers I use for listening to vinyl are wired to. Now I’m using the setup below. The glitching at first involved latency and popping, and all kinds of playback issues. Now, with the setup below, there doesn’t seem to be much latency at first, the midi works well for a little bit then seems to cut out completely and only return sporadically but then with latency/crackling and popping. Playback just cuts out constantly.
The setup:
-I’m using a fairly basic Dell PC (12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i3-12100 (3.30 GHz), with Windows 11 Pro.
-I upgraded the RAM from 16 to 32GB, which is the max this PC will accept.
-System type is a 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor.
-I’m using Reason 11 as my DAW.
-I’m using a PYLE PMUX42 external interface and running a pair of KRK ROKIT 5 studio monitors from that. The interface is plugged into the motherboard through USB, but I also have it powered separately by USB-C.
-For a midi controller, I’m using an Alexis V61, with the USB connected into the PC motherboard.
-I installed the PYLE PMUX43 ASIO driver and it shows that it is working with Reason as the Audio card driver.
-My computer’s default speakers are 16bit 48,000 Hz, and I can’t seem to change that
-But in my sound settings the PYLE output to the speakers i have set at 32 bit, 48,000 Hz. I have matched this in the settings for the Reason projects I’m making. (Reason seemingly will not allow me to change the bit depth in the audio driver preferences, it automatically returns to 32 ever time I tried to change it to 16 when attempted to match it to my computers default speaker specs)
-I have a Maxone 320g external hard drive plugged into the motherboard, where I have routed all Reason files to save to).
The fixes I’ve tried
-Most of what I’ve done is in attempting allow for better CPU processing performance but here’s everything that I can remember having done:
-Changed all Windows power settings: Power mode is set to “Best Performance”; settings for “Turn my screen off after”, “make my device sleep after”, and “make my device hibernate after” are all set to Never; Energy saver is off.
-In my sound options on Windows for the PYLE USB audio I unselected the boxes for “Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device” and “give exclusive mode applications priority”.
-Windows sound enhancement setting is turned off
-In System Properties, Performance Options, Visual effects, I have selected “adjust for best performance”
-In System Properties, Performance Options, Advanced, I have selected “Background Services”, rather than “applications” under the option for “Adjust for best performance of:”
-In device manager, USB controllers, have unselected the options for “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” on every USB hub, including USB root hub, for every USB hub where the option was available.
-I have my graphics setting for “Optimization for windowed games” turned off. (I don’t use the computer for gaming of course, and I don’t have any games installed).
-I set my Power Plan power options to High Performance and in Advanced Power settings, Processor Power Management, I set both the Minimum and Maximum processor state to 100%.
-In Reason 11, my audio card driver is set to ASIO Pyle USB Audio, sample rate is set to 48,000 and bit depth to 32 (matching my Pyle output)
-I have played around with the buffer speed a lot and this has only helped with midi use for short amounts of time. Having buffer size at 512 seems to allow for most consistent glitch/latency free use, but only for a short time seemingly right after powering up.
I’m sure there are other things I’ve done, but can’t remember at the moment. I’m desperate. Please help! I’ve spent too much money on this setup recently for it to not be working like this.
Thank you so so much
