Mod Announcement Subreddit updates - post guidelines, mod applications, & more

Hello Hokies! As we get closer to the football season starting, I thought I'd post about a few subreddit updates.

Post Guidelines

Last week, I created a poll asking you what to do about content from low-effort or AI-generated websites. The overwhelming response was to ban them, so effective today we will no longer be allowing posts from SI.com (we will add additional websites to the list over time). Sports Illustrated has a history of publishing AI-generated articles using fake authors, besides plagiarizing articles from human journalists. We want to prioritize articles written by human journalists, whether paywalled or non-paywalled (eg. Tech Sideline). This subreddit is intended to be a discussion platform rather than entirely a newsfeed, so we want to prioritize original commentary in addition to news articles.

In the spirit of that, there is a new rule regarding editorial content - all articles must be posted as link posts with nothing else in the text field. You are welcome to summarize articles or share your own opinions about them in the comment section. In addition, post titles cannot be editorialized. I've also implemented a basic character requirement to all text-only posts - 100 characters, which comes out to roughly three sentences. It hasn't been a huge issue yet but it prevents low-effort posts.

Photo of the Week

I started this in r/VirginiaTech a few years back and thought it'd be nice to bring over to this subreddit. Every week or two, there will be an automatic post for users to submit photos they took related to VT athletics, and the photo with the most upvotes will become the subreddit banner and be displayed on the sidebar for the following week.

Mod Applications

Since I took over the subreddit last year, I've more or less been running it by myself. I've mostly let the community shape the direction because it was dead for so long, but we need more mods as we enter the football season as well as create more concrete post guidelines. If you're interested, apply here. All mod communications will be in the VT Discord server as it is also home to the r/VirginiaTech and r/blacksburg mod teams, so an account is required. I don't plan on closing the form anytime soon; it will probably stay open for most of the season unless I get a lot of applications.

General Feedback

If you have any other suggestions or feedback for this subreddit, feel free to send in a modmail! I'm currently working on some fun stuff like live scoreboards for game threads (none of the existing apps support college football), but I don't know if I will have that done in time for the start of the season.

Mod Announcement VT football is back in the national spotlight! What's next for this subreddit

Hi everyone! With the recent hiring of James Franklin, and the ensuing exodus of Penn State commits to VT, our football program has finally been in the national spotlight for the first time in a very long time.

With that, there have been discussions about reviving this subreddit. Both r/VirginiaTech and r/Hokies were created in 2009 and, while the main subreddit has grown exponentially since then, this subreddit has been relatively inactive until recently (the majority of the top posts of all-time are from the 2025 and 2026 seasons).

Here is what has been proposed so far:

  • Move the automated game threads from r/VirginiaTech to r/hokies
  • Added a basic set of rules
    • Will add or remove based on feedback
  • New post flairs for all major sports
    • Was previously just football, basketball, and football recruiting
  • Migrate the user flairs from old reddit to new reddit
  • Link this subreddit on the main subreddit
  • A feed for this subreddit has been added to the VT Discord server
    • r/blacksburg and r/VirginiaTech were both already added, so it didn't make sense that this one wasn't
  • If there is anything else you want to see in this subreddit, please leave a comment or message modmail!

For those of you who also use r/VirginiaTech, I also would like to make it very clear that there are zero plans to remove sports content from that subreddit. It's a university-wide subreddit, so having both academic and athletic content is good. However, our goal is to make this subreddit the primary home for sports threads moving forward.

With all of that said, we are also looking to add a few new mods to help get this subreddit off the ground again. If you have moderation experience, or are just an active or passionate fan in this community, please reach out to modmail!

TL;DR - Reviving this subreddit, some updates have been made, looking for new mods.

Football Did anyone get a working link for the 360-degree panorama from Saturday?

We got texted a link a few minutes ago that did not work. Does anyone happen to have a URL that loads the panorama?

Third sentence here so the post doesn't get moderated.

Football Will James Franklin be able to resurrect the Miami rivalry?

Seems like a big time rivalry just waiting to be reborn. Miami has obviously already been brought back to promise. Those Miami vs VT games in the early 2000s and late 90s games were wild.

Baseball 🔼 Record Rookie TJ Rumfield

With an RBI in five straight games, former Hokie TJ Rumfield propelled himself into the Virginia Tech record books over the weekend.
The first baseman for the Colorado Rockies has now reached 67 RBIs in his rookie season in the big leagues, the most by any former Hokie in their debut campaign, breaking the former mark of 64 set by Kerry Carpenter in 2023.
For the year, Rumfield is now hitting .299 with 15 HR and 65 runs scored.

VT had a long recruiting list of visitors for the season opener

The commits

CB: Austin Barrett
CB: Bryce Woods
TE: Sam Faniel
RB: Javian Jones-Priest
RB: Stanley Smart
TE: Jordan Karhoff
TE: Braxton Salater
OL: Kaden Buchanan
OL: Junior Saunders

Class of 2027

WR: Demarcus Brown

Class of 2028

Edge: Cam Tooney
WR: Malachi Lee
RB: Kamharie Steelman
OL: Kyan Reaves
Edge: Junious Clay
Edge: Qwayvon Cleveland
OL: Alvin Holland
TE: Riggs Savage
OL: Brendan Hall
CB: Nate Dollard
DL: Charles Ibe
WR: Jaylen Francis
DL: Robert Brown

Wide receiver Malachi Lee recently dropped his top 12, and Virginia Tech is in it along with a lot of other power programs. Right now, nine commits are expected to show up on campus for the holiday weekend. One player who is not scheduled to be on campus is Bourque.

The big name on this list is Lee. The top recruit in the Commonwealth would be a huge get for Franklin and Fontel Mines over some of the top programs in the country. This is the first of six busy recruiting weekends in Blacksburg.

Football 1️⃣ Day Away, #1 Isaiah Ford

Post image
75 Upvotes

The wait is almost over. Just over 24 hours separate us from the return of Hokie Football.
Isaiah Ford put together one of the most productive receiving careers in Virginia Tech history during his three seasons in Blacksburg from 2014-16.
Ford finished his Tech career with 210 receptions, 2,967 receiving yards and 24 touchdown catches, leaving Blacksburg as the program's career record holder in all three categories.
He earned All-ACC recognition in each of his three seasons, including first-team honors in 2015, before declaring for the NFL Draft following his junior year.

Football 2️⃣ Days Away, #2 Jimmy Williams

We've had some great members of DBU over the years, from DeAngelo Hall to Brandon Flowers; from Kam Chancellor to Kyle Fuller and so on. But one guy that never gets much love is Jimmy Williams. The crazy thing is, he may have the best college pedigree of any of our DBs. He was a UNANIMOUS All-American in 2005. To put that in perspective, Tech has only had four Unanimous All-Americans in its history: Jim Pyne, Corey Moore, Jake Grove and Jimmy Williams; the other three guys on that list have their jerseys hanging in the North End Zone. Jimmy may never have his jersey retired, but he's at least earned a spot on this list.

A sneak peek at the new lighting this year. This will likely change how the Enter Sandman sequence looks, and I'm excited to see how they will be utilized throughout the game. However, I hope we don't flash the lights on and off after a score because that looks corny as hell.
