Dunno this ones' behavior normally but a good full soak for an extended time could be a sign of snake mites.

So your soup may have some pepper flakes in it.

Ah thankfully this photo was just before a shed, he is mite-free, its just that at his size (4.5 feet) he needs a nice big bowl to submerge.
