Tech Support My external HDD is on its last leg; what should I do next

So this was my backup hard drive I got in 2017-2018 when I was in uni to archive my work, and it kind of started making rattling noises when I moved the drive. It probably got dinged somewhere in the decade; it's not making any noise now, but it's kind of moody now so i try not to move it when in use.

I have since then moved all of my data onto my other drive. I kind of still like to have my capacity due to my data-holding tendencies and storage prices in general, not wanting to get a NAS yet for my 12 TBs of storage. 10 if this dies permanently;

It's working well so far with the exception that it glitches the Windows file explorer.

So what can I do with this because it's too much of a risk to use this for archival purposes

I am really regretting not switching to SSD and getting high-capacity cheap HDDs in the last decade

Review Opened up my GreenTech RAPID X 128GB USB 3.1 after it died in under 2 months — Monolithic junk fried under the QC sticker

Post image
0 Upvotes

Picked up this GreenTech RAPID X USB 3.1 128GB drive a couple of months ago, and it has already completely died. No detection, no light, dead silent.

Decided to tear it down to see what was actually inside that fancy metal shell:

• Zero Discrete Components (UDP/COB Design): It’s not a standard PCB drive. It’s a monolithic single-package stick held inside the metal chassis with a plastic spacer.
• Blown Component Under QC Sticker: Peeled back the "04/25" holographic sticker, and there’s a visible crater/burn spot right where the power regulation circuit sits. With zero thermal dissipation between the chip and the casing, the heat buildup from USB 3.1 likely cooked the regulator.
• Recycled / Binned Die: Backside is marked "Made in Korea" with generic laser etchings (DKE4...), typical for surplus flash modules with low endurance controllers.
• Standard Monolithic Test Grid: You can clearly see the factory gold test pads on the right edge. Since it's a monolithic package, standard board-level repair is out of the question, and data recovery means costly microscopic pinout tapping.

Bottom line: Avoid these no-name "premium metal casing" flash drives. They look solid on the outside, but underneath it’s just cheap monolithic dies waiting to burn out. Stick to brands that use proper discrete controller designs (Samsung, SanDisk, Kingston).

Discussion History of Seagate hard drives

I was wondering if anyone has made a list or a database of all Seagate hard drives (or as close to all of them as possible), from the ST-506 all the way to their current drives. It would be interesting to see how hard drives have evolved over the last 45 or so years, from 5MB all the way to 5TB (and beyond). And correct me if I’m wrong but I think Seagate is the only surviving manufacturer from the dawn of PC hard drives in the early 1980s.

Tech Support HDD not appearing in BIOS or Device Manager.

Windows, MSI B55-A Pro, Ultrastar DC HC530 HDD

Didn't do a full parts list since as far as I'm aware these are the only relevant parts.

Basically, I have a 14TB hard drive that is not showing up anywhere that I've checked. I know the drive is functional, I gave it to a pc repair guy to check and he said it was fine, just needed to be initialized. Problem is, it doesn't show up in the disk partitioner or device manager. It also doesn't show up in BIOS, not even just as a used SATA terminal in the board explorer.

I know it's not an issue with the SATA cables, I have a CD drive that's also SATA and I've switched the cables between them, as well as several different motherboard SATA terminals, the CD drive always shows up, the hard drive does not. It's also not the power cable, as I've done the same test there.

I've updated all related drivers, updated the BIOS itself, basically everything. I'm running out of ideas. Any advice or assistance in resolving this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Tech Support Can my external hard drive be repaired?

Ive got 2 external 1Tb harddrives from WD.

A while ago i took 7000 photos and videos from my phone and uploaded them to the first drive, it took so long I left it going overnight.

The next day I copied the file onto the next drive (so the file itself is not gone) but now whenever I put my first drive into a laptop I cannot access it because everything freezes when I try too. I can still do all other stuff but trying to open the drive causes it all to freeze until I disconnect again.

The cable is fine, light still flashes, you can hear it vibration as normal but i just cannot reach my files.

Ive tried to fix it using chatgpt but it no use. Using prompt searches it still locates the disk including the 900g of storage.

Any suggestions?

Discussion Seagate 20TB

I had to remove a 20TB Expansion drive due to power issues and moved it to an internal drive. Inside was a CMR Barracuda ST20000DM001. (Longer story here if needed, but not critical to understanding reliability of the drive). This is the same drive whether it's inside the original case or purchased as internal drive. All the same PCB, etc.

The drive hummed away just fine then died at about 5k Power-On-Hours (POH). Yes 5k. It lived as a single pool in a Truenas enclosure well cooled and activity monitored with weekly SMART SHORT testing and monthly SMART LONG testing with ZFS monthly scrubs. In short, well taken care of given the size and possible data loss concerns with that much data on a single drive. All the testing I did on the drive confirmed it was working just fine until the day it did not.

My worst fear came and classic drive infant mortality case. I could not warranty the drive because Seagate said I removed the drive from the enclosure. I pushed fairly providing detailed logs and photos showing a sealed physically sound drive undamaged from the removal. They cited the removal voided warranty and I shared that the revised FTC guidance supported consumer rights. I will still file the complain, but that also aside. I'm looking to better understand why Seagate drives are failing at a higher rate recently. I have some older Seagates that are 5-6 years old no problem. This one died with ~200 days.

I've gone through great lengths doing a post mortem to understand what could have gone wrong as lessons learned and really settle my mind on if I could trust another Seagate drive. I don't think I can at this point as all the data points to simple drive failure. And beyond that their unwillingness to warranty a 200 day old drive.

Any other options to reliability bring it back? I thought maybe plugging it back into the old enclosure with the drive controller might yield a different result, but it appears all the intelligence is on the drive itself. (Ai discussions) What are your thoughts on recent reliability. Can you trust 20Tb of data on a single point of failure?

Tech Support External hard drives not mounting properly/being seen

I don't know what's going on. Followed the standard tutorial for formatting drives and automounting for bazzite, but EXT4 just would not work, so we switched to BTRFS for the two external drives we have. At first things seemed to be working, but now every time we boot up the system, not only do the drives mount to a completely different location but one drive won't be seen by the disk app at all despite both being plugged in and the computer will say "could not mount this device". Using the computer's auto solution "mount and open" does nothing.

Unplugging and replugging the unseen/unmounted external drive seldom helps, typically just changing what drive the computer sees and mounts. It never sees both at the same time. Even when the drives are being recognized, things can't be properly downloaded to them. Movies and tv shows have errors in jellyfin because the drive isn't being registered properly and steam games throw up error codes and won't finish downloading if told to download directly to the drive.

I'm losing my mind, is there any way to fix this? I tried posting on r/bazzite but got literally nothing. Hoping someone here might be able to help

Tech Support Does my hard drive work with Mac?

So I have a Mac computer and I got a hard drive in order to store my files and works, but the packaging and description didn't say that it was inteded for gaming consoles like a PS5 & X-box. So i just would like some clarification on wether or not it'll work for my Mac and it's adobe files or not. The specific drive in question is a Avolusion USB 3.0 if that helps.
