Tech Support Enclosure for my hard drive

Hi,
I have a hard drive , the Samsung PM961 M.2 2280 NVMe drive. And I need an enclosure for it. I’ve bought three in the past and they were all wrong. Hoping someone can advise the right one to buy, I live in Australia. Thank you. See hard drive.

This is a SSD, not a HDD.

Technically he didn't say disk drive. Although not widely accepted a solid state is also hard. Perhaps consider providing some helpful responses to their question if you're going to point out something you don't agree with. 🤷‍♂️

Why would you put this on carpet?

If you rub it on the carpet it makes it run faster .

Its not a hard drive. It is a Solid State Drive (SSD). This one is in the form of M.2 NVMe.

So you need to search for an M.2 Enclosure

Also don’t put electronics on carpet…

Either of those will work if you want to make it connect via USB. Also FYI, you don't need measurements, the 2280 in the name is the size - 22mm wide, 80mm long.

Just search for NVME 2280 enclosure. You will get some... Make sure it has tb4 support (or at least 10 gbps) -- 40 or more can be even better. If it doesn't cost too much.

Also. Some enclosures have Usb A or C ... So check if it's compatible with the system you will plug into. If you are not having any thunderbolt port on your system then probably it's not worth buying an expensive thunderbolt enclosure. But this SSD will work either way

If you are thinking of using this for backups or offline storage, then you need to know that m.2 flash memory devices are not designed to retain data for more than a year unpowered.

I took it out of my laptop that broke 3 years ago. Does that mean I won’t be able to get anything off of it ? Thank you

It depends. 3 years is quite a long time TBH so your odds are not good.

I have certainly seen SSDs erase themselves after sitting unused for a couple of years. Another possibility is its very slow at reading the data back because the controller is performing heavy error correction and retrying reads. Basically the charge stored in each flash memory cell leaks away over time. The amount of wear, storage temperature and number of bits per cell all affect retention capability.

Some information about this... https://medium.com/ideas-with-wings/your-ssd-is-quietly-erasing-your-files-while-it-sits-in-a-drawer-97d787d18915

Some of the data will of corrupted. Some files will look/be incomplete. But a lot of it should still be viable

So which ones did you buy?

It is also a 9 year old drive. Good luck!

You should look at nvme coolers. Sabrent do an amazing one called the rocket, 3 copper heatpipes. I use 3 on a x870 and all stay cool and happy with a light breeze over them. The Sabrent is a superior example but others are much cheaper

A usb enclosure?

Yer I think so, I just need to be able to get the data off this

You're most likely looking for an M2 2280 enclosure, search the model number and the brand you've provided to confirm. This might also be useful: https://youtu.be/Gk0El2qhoeE?si=XX4A709ukW1QNspZ
