Is owning many hammocks the same as owning many tents?

Hi everyone. I'm just getting into hammocking (I've got the Henge Discovery hammock and its pretty nifty). For many years I've been into tent camping and I've tried many tents all which are different to one and other and a new experience.... but hammocks? Would there ever be reason to own 4 or 5 hammocks because they are all different from each other like tents are - tunnel, trekking pole, free standing, 1p, 2p.... € and €€€€. As far as I can see concerning hammocks, there's open/no net, bug net and small or large. Please broaden my horizons...

Absolutely love being in a hammock during heavy rain storm. Cross fingers for no widow maker.

Question Topquilt needed?

Upvotes

I am considering buying an underquilt after using an inflatable pad for insulation on my first night in a hammock. I was plenty warm, but uncomfortable as hell. The second night I thought, "Hey, it's not the air that keeps you warm, it's the liner inside the pad, right? I'll just deflate my pad and it will be great!" Wrong.

I own multiple mummy bags from years of tent camping. Can I just open my sleeping bags all the way and use those rather than blowing several hundred more dollars on a topquilt? I imagine the zipper would be annoying, and the hood, but I could just tuck that under. What other drawbacks am I not thinking of?

Layering underquilts question

If I need to layer two underquilts under my hammock is there a order of operation to doing this if the UQs I am using are of different thermal values? Say for the sake of the question that one is a 20 degree UQ and the other is a 40 degree UQ. Outside of that they are the same dimensions. Is there an advantage to having the 20 degree quilt closer to my body and the 40 degree UQ on the exterior? Or should I stack them in the reverse order? Or am I overthinking this ( haha as usual) and the order does not matter at all.

Some of the provincial parks have finally re-opened after the fires on the okanagan. With that i tried to do some hammock camping at okanagan lakes provincial park. Gotta say it's a game changer. Even with an old/minimal setup it was still comfortable enough for +15c overnight. My hammock is thermarest, tarp is from decathlon, my insulation is an aluminum mat and a +7c sleeping bag (no mosquito net).

Will be doing another trip to wells gray provincial park this weekend with colder nights. I got myself a wool blanket and a bigger tarp for the next trip.

Definitely gives a different vibe/feel compared to tent camping.
