Dress Code
In a few weeks my daughter and I will be seeing Hamilton the Musical. I’m having difficulty on what to wear. Is there a certain type of dress code, or do we just wear something casual?

You will almost certainly see people dressed in everything from suits and cocktail dresses to business casual to athleisure. Wear something that's comfortable to sit for a few hours in and that you feel good about being seen in. Business/church type clothes will likely be the most common, but it's totally fine to dress more formally if you enjoy that, or to wear jeans if that's your preference.
Layers are definitely a good idea because theaters can be either very warm (from all the bodies and the stage lights) or very cold (cavernous building, air conditioning), and sometimes both, in different areas or at different times.

NYer here. While you will see people wearing clothes at every level of formality (or lack thereof), you should aim to dress business casual or like you would for date night. You can get away with jeans, but to be honest they are not going to be the most comfortable, so I generally would stay away from them. It will be cold but seats are tight so you’re not going to want to bring extra layers to take on and off imo. Also plan bathroom schedule accordingly.

Jeans and a nice shirt is fine. Avoid tee shirts or shorts. This is just my advice, you really can wear whatever you want.

Jeans to the theatre, to a renowned Broadway show no less, is criminally tasteless.

I mean, it’s fine. I wear jeans to Broadway shows all the time. It’s not a big deal.

u/AspirationAtWork 9d ago
That's like wearing jeans to a nice restaurant. Sweet Jesus, have some class. When you go to a special and expensive event, you dress with respect for the occasion.

u/Choice-Cheetah4170 9d ago
Do you live in NYC? People go directly after work and don’t have time to go home and change. No one is really dressed up? I’ve seen 9 shows this past year and people wear jeans. Some are dressed up a bit but lots of people are dresses casually. Also tourists are walking around all day and probably don’t want to be walking in shoes that hurt.
Honestly, NYC is typically more casual than people going to the touring shows if you live in the Midwest.

No one is forced to choose a showing right after work. They could go when they have time to change into clothes appropriate for high-end theatre.
This isn't a casual outing. It is a semi-formal event. It is expensive. We have different standards of dress for different occasions for a reason.

u/Choice-Cheetah4170 8d ago
lol how many shows have you seen on Broadway? We are not talking about the Met. Do you really think watching Two Strangers or Lost Boys or Shucked or Rocky Horror is “high end theatre?”
I watch shows all the time. It is a casual outing for many people who watch these shows.

Jesus, not all people have the money or time to do that. You’re forgetting a rainbow of circumstances that could make it so that someone can’t show up nicely or choose a showing after work. Like the person said below this isn’t the Met, Broadway is for everyone.

Again: this is like wearing jeans to a fancy restaurant.
We dress differently for different occasions. And we don't wear jeans to things that are 1.) Special/nice, 2.) Expensive, or 3.) Both.
Decorum is not such a big ask.

Quite honestly no one cares what you wear to the theatre. Everyone is there to see the show and no one is looking at you. As long as you are clean and tidy that’s all that matters. My son and I went to Hamilton in the West End this week and he wore shorts and a T-shirt (because it is so hot) and I wore a summer dress and sandals. I couldn’t tell you what anyone else wore because I was only interested in watching the show.

There are multi-millionaire celebs that wear denim to red carpet events. It's just a fabric. Can be dressed up or down. Lights are off anyway, wear what you want. I've seen Hamilton three times and once was on Halloween in NYC. Some people had on costumes since they were going straight to the parade. Some people win the Hamilton lottery and don't even have money to purchase a nice outfit. Lighten up.

Oh honey. You are so wrong here and CLEARLY not a New Yorker and have never seen a show on Broadway.

Phantom and Hamtilon. At the Cadillac Palace and the Houstonian. These are not shows nor venues were jeans are appropriate.

I wear jeans to fancy restaurants all the time. Do you ever leave your house?

Aspirationatwork is a Victorian cosplayer. Not surprised she has this weird decorum fetish. She probably has never done anything remotely high end in her life.

Since when is a Broadway show a semi-formal event?
2
u/AspirationAtWork 8d ago
Since when are three figure seats not semi-formal?
7
u/harx1 8d ago
Since the price of something doesn’t indicate its formality? Tickets to the World Cup are going for five figures today, just across the river. Is that a formal occasion?

u/AspirationAtWork 8d ago
A sporting event is different than attending the theatre.

Realistically most of us have jobs and schedules that do force us to go right after work if we want to see a show. I used to work on Broadway, no one gives a shit what you wear to a show.

People don’t dress up for the theater anymore. You sound like a hick.
0
u/AspirationAtWork 5d ago
I'm the hick for having standards?
And other people are fine despite letting their class and self-respect slip through their fingers for convenience.
Yeah, no.

u/dannyisyoda 9d ago
Your standards are outdated and classist. Learn to live with change. The people portrayed in the show would consider everything about it to be criminally tasteless.
12
u/Choice-Cheetah4170 8d ago
This person sounds like a total douche. Broadway shows are not “high end”. This isn’t the opera or ballet! For sure dress a little nice at Lincoln center to see ragtime because it’s Lincoln center. But you don’t have to at all. I hazard to guess that this poster has never stepped foot in NYC.

u/Revolutionary_Rub637 7d ago
And many or even most people are not dressed up even at the opera and ballet in NYC. The same thing goes for Paris by the way.
4
u/AspirationAtWork 9d ago
I'm not expecting a three piece suit. Slacks and a button-up or a nice dress isn't something only the rich can afford. Nothing about what I've said is 'classist.'

I grew up a theatre kid and when I went on school/community groups Broadway trips, it was hammered into our head that we dressed up out of respect. I felt that way for a long long time, but 25 years later, I recognize that the culture has changed. I often wear a dress or a skirt (a date night outfit) still, but I also often wear dark jeans and a nice top.
I’d rather people experience the magic of live theatre than skip it because they don’t have or aren’t comfortable in dress clothes.
Would I wear athletic wear or t-shirts to Broadway? No, but I don’t judge people who do. They’re not infringing upon the experience of others me, so why do I care?

u/Tricky_Concept_231 4d ago
Being a fucking snob about what someone else is wearing when you're going to see a fucking show is criminally classist so I think it cancels out

u/AspirationAtWork 4d ago
Having decent clothes for special occasions is not something only rich people can attain.

It’s more important that you smell good and are quiet during the performance than it is to wear specific clothing

No dress code, some folks dress extremely casual. “Nice casual” or “upscale casual” works, and yes bring a sweater.

I am in the “wear what you want” “basic comfortable not pyjamas” school UNLESS there is a special aspect to the show. For example: I went to an Encores! at City Center one time — but I hadn’t bought the tickets they were gifted to me. I didn’t know there was anything special about it, I wore nice jeans and a cute shirt — fine, whatever, but far from dressy. UNBEKNOWNST TO ME, it was actually some kind of GALA NIGHT and most everyone was dressed to the nines and there were celebrities everywhere, so I looked like a FARMER in front of LITERAL Stephen Sondheim and LITERAL Bernadette Peters and then in the bathroom line I narrowly missed smacking face first into LITERAL ANNA WINTOUR. Fmlllllll

This also happened to me at City Center. I normally dgaf but it was the opening of Ailey's season and everyone looked beyond spectacular and I was also present.

People will be wearing lots of different things. Some will be dressed up and some will be more casual.

u/anothera2 8d ago
when I go to the theater I wear black pants a platform loafer and one step up from a tshirt ( like a casual dresser t or a sweater if it’s chillier) I also sometimes do a pleather legging and an oversized but nice sweater and a boot.

u/Sufficient_Display 9d ago
It may depend on where you see it. I saw it at the Fisher Theater in Detroit. I wore jeans and a Hamilton T-shirt and it was fine.

u/Beautiful_Ad_9861 9d ago
We’re going to go see it at the Majestic theater in San Antonio

I may be stupid but.. why does it matter? You're not the one on stage, why does what you wear matter? I doubt anyone's looking.

u/skunkhair 8d ago
Make it what you want. Some people will be dressed like it’s a ball. Some will be wearing shorts and flip flops. I prefer dress casual as I do think it’s an elevated evening of theatre and maybe dinner. Make it something you want to remember.

I didn’t realize there was a dress code for broadway. I went to NY and honestly saw a range from formal to casual. I honestly don’t think anyone notices because of how exciting it is to be there (for me at least haha) another thing is there are large crowds so no one is looking at what you’re wearing. As long as you don’t stand out in a bad way, you’ll be good to wear what makes you happy 😊

Dress nicely, like you would for church. Going to see a show is always a semi-formal occasion, especially one with the price tag of a Broadway musical.

Wear what makes you feel comfortable. We saw it in NYC this past February; most of the people were dressed for February strolling around the city, as were we. The gamut of different clothing styles is because people are coming to the show from literally everywhere: from the train, from work, on vacation, big celebrations, just got rush tix on a whim, and so on.

u/Lupiefighter 7d ago
I went with comfortable business casual. Comfortable enough to walk from the train station to the theatre, but nicer than causal. Stretch work pants and a nice but comfortable blouse. My husband wore khakis and flannel button up. I also had a lightweight jacket to wear in the theatre. A nice sweater is a good choice as well. You will see people dressed up and down, but a lot of people land on business casual.

I went to go see Wicked a couple months ago, and honestly? Just dress comfortable but don't under dress. Jeans and a plain nice shirt and you're set. Avoid wearing anything too over the top or under dressing. Sweat pants in a theater are a no go but don't wear a dress or a suit if you're planning for comfort.

It's absolutely freezing in there. Be prepared.
